  • This survey was conducted to investigate liberal arts college students' academic reading, to explore basic issues in their reading, and to provide how to improve their academic reading in their majors. The participants in this study were 457 students who enrolled in a college of liberal arts in a university. The study results represented as follows. Firstly, there were significant differences in vocabulary, reading comprehension, and fast-reading competence among student groups of different majors. Secondly, 66.9% of the students did not read widely in their major subjects throughout all departments. 67.7% of the students with low reading performance responded that they could complete college courses only with course textbook reading, course participation, and requirement submission. Thirdly, regarding the number of major subject books that the participants read, 82.1% of the students read less than 15 books, while 11.3% read less than a book. The students' academic reading hours during per week were less than 5 hours for 68.9% students and less than 10 hours for 13.9% respectively. Based on the results (departmental differences in reading competence, wide reading in major subject books, and liberal arts students' reading hours), liberal arts colleges need to design programs to guarantee quality and quantity in reading major subject books.

  • This thesis is a study of the printed books of Liudao Pushuo(六道普說), one of Mengshan(蒙山)'s works. Mengshan De-yi(德異) lived in the Song(宋) and Yuan(元) Dynasty and was a Buddhist monk of Linji Chan(臨濟宗). Liudao Pushuo exists only in Korea, and there is no copy in China. Liudao Pushuo is a summary of the preachings of Mengshan about the Ten dharma-worlds(十法界) which include the six realms(六道) and the four kinds of holy men(四聖). There are 22 printed books in Korea. This study analyzed their physical descriptions and structures. As a result, all the printed books have 'sajudanbyoun(四周單邊)' except one book that is 'julchopjang(折帖裝)' of 'Bulgapsa(佛甲寺)'. There are also ten books with 'Heukku(黑口) and naehyang heukumi(內向黑魚尾)'. This indicates that those were typical of the printing type of the early days of the Joseon(朝鮮) Dynasty. In addition, the books with 13 characters in one line(13字本) were common. All 22 printed books were published in the $15^{th}$ and 16th century. This study confirms that Liudao Pushuo was handed down in the Goryeo(高麗) from China and actively published in the 15th and 16th century. This shows that Mengshan's Seon(禪) had a significant effect on Buddhism in Korea.

  • In this study, the meteorology terms in the geography text books of North Korea which includes all of the meteorology educational contents in secondary school curriculum are compared with those in the earth science text books in South Korea. Forty science terms which are the same meaning but composed of different words are picked up to investigate the degree for 89 high school students in Chonnam province to perceive the meanings correctly. High school students' perceptions is on the average 30% higher in terminology of South Korea textbooks than in those of North Korea. But, students' perceptions on 9 North Korean terms is rather higher compared to South Korean terms. Twenty six (83.9%) terms which are difficult for high school students to perceive correct meanings are those lately composed of North Korean native words. Most of meteorology terms in South Korean textbooks are derived from the Chinese characters or imported from foreign language terms are easier for high school students to perceive correct meanings than those of North Korean terms derived from North Korean native language.

  • Purpose : To compare the skin damage recovery efficacy of natural Angelicae Gigantis Radix extract (N-AGR) and cultivated A. Gigantis Radix extract (C-AGR). Through this, we confirmed whether the quality standards of herbal medicines recorded in the classic books make a difference in the experimental efficacy using epithelial cells. Methods : The quality standards of medicinal herbs in the classic books and the cultivation and processing conditions of two types of A. gigas were compared. After inducing oxidative stress with H2O2, cytoprotective property of N-AGR and C-AGR were evaluated through cell viability. Additionally, after wound formation of epithelial JB6 cells, N-AGR and C-AGR were treated to evaluate wound healing efficacy. Result : The natural A, gigas met the excellent quality standards of the classic books. N-AGR inhibited cell death by oxidative stress induced by H2O2, and was superior to C-AGR. Both N-AGR and C-AGR showed dose-dependent wound healing efficacy, but N-AGR was significantly superior to C-AGR. Conclusions : Through the oxidative stress of skin and skin wound healing efficacy experiments using epithelial cells, natural A. gigas showed superior efficacy compared to cultivated A. gigas.

  • Some traditional definitions of information are examined to seek for the mutual concept of them. Mun-hun(文獻, biblio) is defined to clarify its modernized concept. Transformation of library science into Biblio-information science, with the application of information science, are maintained. The results mentioned above are as the followings; 1. The mutual concept of information should be defined as the factor which gives the motivations of certain perception and thinking to the brain of which is the contral center of thinking and behavior of man, and as the factor of knowledge and science. 2. Mun-hun(文獻) means originally "books and wise men". It is elucidated that books mean recorded information, and wise men mean oral information. And so, mun-hun means composite information. 3. It is the inevitable need to investigate the "effective means and methods for the effective use of the best information in a great information flow, and for the recreation of the more advanced information. Biblio information science should be the science to meet the need. 4. Biblio information science should be formed with the application of library science and information science. 5. Biblio information science can be defined as a science to investigate the effective means and methods of selection, processing, ac. cumulation and use of information materials, for the recreation of the more advanced information.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore what kinds of science communication are ongoing in formal and informal settings for learning about nuclear energy, which is very important issue domestically and internationally. The researchers collected and analyzed data from science textbooks at elementary and middle school levels, from exhibitions in Y informal hall that belongs to one nuclear power plant, and from 40 bestselling books about nuclear energy in order to explore the kind of science communication. The same process was used to explore Japanese case so that we could compare the results with Korean cases and draw implications for enhancing science communication about nuclear energy. The science communication of nuclear energy in Korea included implicit and indirect content espoused in science textbooks; two opposite views displayed in bestselling books, and positive aspects mainly displayed in exhibition of information hall in nuclear power plant. It is suggested that both direct and explicit science communication along with the neutral viewpoints including positive and negative ones be provided for the public to form a good understanding of nuclear energy.

The 64 books selected for this study were analyzed by the standards set forth in the Exploring Life segment of the 5th Revision of Kindergarten Teaching Procedures (1993). The story-structure strategy was based on the structural pattern suggested by Moen(1991). Results showed that the structural elements of the illustrated fairy tales could be classified into 7 categories and 8 types of content patterns. After validating the adaptability of the fairy tales for use in teaching Kindergarten science, the books were cataloged by type and category.
