Methods: This study used a randomized control group pretest-posttest design. A total of 47 high school students participated from two high schools in Gyeonggi Province. They were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=24), which participated in the 8-session program, or to a control group (n=23). Psychological well-being, depression, and self-esteem were measured. Results: A significant difference in psychological well-being was observed between the two groups after the program. However, there were no significant between-group differences in depression or self-esteem. Conclusion: The positive psychology-based mental program was effective at increasing psychological well-being in adolescents, especially high school students. This study suggests that a school curriculum could incorporate positive psychology-based mental programs for high school students to promote their mental health.

  • Purpose: This study compared the effects of two six-week school-based intervention programs - a health promotion program using a school forest and a traditional school health promotion program (TSHPP) - on physical and mental health among elementary school students. Methods: A total of 73 students participated in the study: 21 students in the 6-week school forest program conducted in a rural area and 52 students in the 6-week TSHPP conducted in an urban area. Children's health promotion behavior, depression and hyperactivity were measured using a self-report questionnaire. To assess children's physical health, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and heart rate variability (HRV) were used. Results: Overall, both intervention programs improved participants' physical and mental health. Both programs significantly decreased the body fat percentage; this effect was more prominent in the TSHPP group. Only the TSHPP significantly decreased the participants' BMI after the intervention. The school forest group showed significantly improved relaxation and diminished hyperactivity; the TSHPP group showed significantly improved health promoting behavior and social relationship after the intervention. Comparing the two groups'post-pre difference scores, the two groups significantly differed only in social relationship. Both group showed significantly improved depression after the intervention. Conclusion: These findings support the effectiveness of these 6-week school-based health promotion programs in improving physical and mental health among school-aged children.

  • Background & Objectives: Self-rated health has been widely used to evaluate health status and accepted as a subjective measurement of quality of life. This study aimed to analyze the associations between self-rated health, health promotion behaviors, and mental health factors and suggest the approaches to improve health status among university students. Methods: Two thousand six hundred seventy-seven students who had stayed at dormitories on campus participated in the DU health survey by self-reported questionnaire from April 10 to 14, 2017. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of association of self-rated health with health-related factors among male and female students. Results: 38.6% of the respondents reported good self-rated health. Male and first-year students were more likely to report good self-rated health than female and third-year students. There were significant differences in sex, grade, health problems, BMI, sleeping hours, eating breakfast, consumption of fruits and vegetables, physical activity (regular walking, strength exercise, moderate exercise, vigorous exercise), perceived stress, depression, and suicide thought (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although health promotion programs for university students are essential to support their adaptation to campus life and academic achievement, evidence-based health programs to encourage their participation are still insufficient. Therefore, it should establish a campus-based health policy and develop health promotion programs to increase self-rated health levels and prevent mental health problems for university students.

The mental health awareness program improved 'general health awareness' (t=2.620, p<.05), measured using the Korean General Health Questionnaire. The school bullying prevention program resulted in decreased 'self esteem' (t=3.769, p<.01), measured using the Self Esteem Scale and decreased 'anger' (t=4.198, p<.01), assessed using the Novaco Anger Scale.
