Exploratory Study: A Modification Training Method of Attentional Bias Toward Safety

  • Background: The high sensitivity of individuals toward safety information in production activities, that is, attentional bias toward safety (ABS), can positively predict safe behaviors. It has become a hot topic in current organizational safety behavior research. However, there is no literature on its modification method. Methods: Based on the modified dot-probe task, we designed a modification training method of ABS. The training method required subjects to respond to the location of detection points that presented after safety stimulus and neutral stimulus pictures. Subjects' attentional bias values of safety and neutral pictures were measured during the experiment. Twenty-one students were selected and divided into a control group and training group to gain comparable results. Results: A novel training method was developed in this study to promote the efficacy of safety stimulus by activating ABS of the subjects. Moreover, repeated trainings and preacquired relative knowledge can enhance this effect. Conclusion: This study develops an experimental approach to evaluate the effectiveness of safety education and safety training, and also provides a new research idea for accident prevention.

A Diagnostic Study of safety education in elementary schools based on PRECEDE Model (PRECEDE 모형을 이용한 일부 초등학교 안전교육의 진단적 연구)

  • As the complexity of the our environment is further complicated by advancements in industry and increase in vehicle traffic flow, the incidents of injury causing accidents are on the rise. Consequently, there is increasing emphasis on the importance of systematic and continual safety education for injury preventive behaviors. This study investigates safety related problems of elementary school students based on the PRECEDE model, proposed by Green et al.(1980 Green), to comprehensively identify the requirements of school safety education. The identified requirements were used to diagnose the current state of elementary school safety education through the analysis of multidimensional factors. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 594 sixth grade students from randomly selected 4 schools in Seoul to examine their injury preventive behaviors and to determine the educational diagnosis variables that affect it. The duration of the survey was 3 weeks starting from April 12, 1999 to May 8, 1999. A summary of the survey results are presented below; 1. Situations in which accidents have occurred were, in their order of frequency, ‘during play or sports activities within the school grounds’ was most frequent at 59.6%, ‘during play on local streets’ at 49.5%, and ‘traffic accidents’ at 41.6%. 2. Categorization of the injury preventive behavior showed that ‘not playing at high traffic flow locations such as streets and construction sites’ had the higher level of observance, while ‘wearing of helmets and joint protection devices during playing’ was least observed. 3. Considering injury preventive behaviors in relation to educational diagnosis variables indicated, for predisposing factors, lower ‘perception to injury accidents’ (p〈0.001) combined with higher ‘concerns for injury accidents’(p〈0.001), ‘practice of preventive behavior’(p〈0.001), and ‘the level of safety knowledge’(p〈0.001) resulted in significantly higher observance of injury preventive behaviors. For enabling factors, higher ‘perceived level of the school safety education’ (p〈0.001) and ‘availability of safety education resources’(p〈0.01) indicated significantly higher observance of injury preventive behaviors. For the reinforcing factor, frequent exposure to ‘safety education brochure’ (p〈0.01) and ‘audio-visual material for safety education’(p〈0.01) combined with more ‘regional safety education’ (p〈0.01), ‘home safety education’ (p〈0.01), ‘school safety education’(p〈0.001), and, ‘parents’ observance of preventive behaviors' (p〈0.001) showed significantly higher observance of injury preventive behaviors. 4. An analysis of the factors that affect injury preventive behaviors showed that the enabling factor ‘awareness of school safety education’ had the highest correlation with injury preventive behaviors followed by factors, in their order of significance, ‘practice of preventive behavior’, ‘perception to injury accidents’, ‘level of safety knowledge’, ‘parents’ observances of preventive behaviors', and ‘concerns for injury accidents.’

The Relationships Among Occupational Safety Climate, Patient Safety Climate, and Safety Performance Based on Structural Equation Modeling

  • Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships among hospital safety climate, patient safety climate, and safety outcomes among nurses. Methods: In the current cross-sectional study, the occupational safety climate, patient safety climate, and safety performance of nurses were measured using several questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was applied to test the relationships among occupational safety climate, patient safety climate, and safety performance. Results: A total of 211 nurses participated in this study. Over half of them were female (57.0%). The age of the participants tended to be between 20 years and 30 years old (55.5%), and slightly more than half had less than 5 years of work experience (51.5%). The maximum and minimum scores of occupational safety climate dimensions were found for reporting of errors and cumulative fatigue, respectively. Among the dimensions of patient safety climate, non-punitive response to errors had the highest mean score, and manager expectations and actions promoting patient safety had the lowest mean score. The correlation coefficient for the relationship between occupational safety climate and patient safety climate was 0.63 (p<0.05). Occupational safety climate and patient safety climate also showed significant correlations with safety performance. Conclusions: Close correlations were found among occupational safety climate, patient safety climate, and nurses' safety performance. Therefore, improving both the occupational and patient safety climate can improve nurses' safety performance, consequently decreasing occupational and patient-related adverse outcomes in healthcare units.

  • Due to the frequent occurrence of large-scale disasters such as recent earthquakes, the problem of the safety of old school buildings has emerged. The need to secure safety management technology through constant monitoring is increasing in an attempt to supplement old school buildings with weak disaster response capabilities. Traditional research is approaching the development of an existing sensor-based risk precursor information monitoring system. However, unlike this, in this study, we will focus on the development of a data analysis platform as part of the development of a continuous monitoring system that can be prepared for earthquakes, collapses, and fires, based on constantly measured data. For this reason, the development of a safety diagnostic algorithm based on the optimal sensor-attached points and sensor data reflecting the fragile characteristics of old school buildings was derived. Utilizing this, a message and action manual system for each management / use entity of school buildings after retirement was constructed.

  • Occupational Safety and Health Expenses Law in construction industry was enacted in 1988 by the notification of Ministry of Employment and Labor and 22 revisions have been made since. The fact that revisions have been made almost every year since the first enactment shows that Occupational Safety and Health Expenses can effectively prevent construction accidents and the need for revisions to fit the reality has been raised continuously. Despite the construction industry has undergone various internal and external environmental changes, (such as the changes in the safety and health management techniques and the increase in the construction employees' desire for safety) the appropriation standard of Occupational Safety and Health Expenses has been calculated based on the contract price. The construction industry has constantly suggested that the Occupational Safety and Health Expenses be calculated based on the estimated construction expenses since applying the current method doesn't provide enough money to secure the safety. Also because it has become mandatory to hire a health manager since 2015, the lack of Occupational Safety and Health Expenses is expected to get worse. In this study, we will analyze the usage of Occupational Safety and Health Expenses and propose a more practical and realistic change in setting the appropriation standard of Occupational Safety and Health Expenses.

A Study on the Real Condition of Teachers' Safety Accident and Methods of Preventive Education in Special Schools for Students with Mental Disorder (지적장애 특수학교 교사의 안전사고 실태 및 예방교육 방안에 관한 연구)

  • This study is the purpose of effective safety education measures for special school teachers with intellectual disabilities on the status of safety accidents and preventive education. In summary, the results show that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between the safety education activities of teachers at special schools with intellectual disabilities, safety education environment, safety education recognition, safety education knowledge, safety resources and training experience, and internal and external factors. Overall, the experience of safety accidents by teachers is higher than expected, and the practice of safety education to prevent the occurrence of various places, times, and types such as classrooms, staircases, auditoriums, and rides. The practice of safety education to prevent this also indicated that the safety resources of special school teachers and opportunities for training experiences should be expanded more by presenting safety data, knowledge, awareness, and education activities in order.

  • This study is with the subjects of 7 primary schools in Daejon City which opened after 2004 when the Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development released the "Study of Developing the Manual for Safety and Plan of school facilities". This is to study the measures of improving or enhancing the safety criteria on the school facilities from the viewpoint of actual planning as well as of architectural planning through investigating and analysing the cause, the status and the type of negligent accidents by school which are occurring both directly and indirectly. Though the analysis of the examined contents shows there is no facility in primary schools not satisfying 'the criteria on safety maintenance of school facilities', the criteria is so comprehensive and general that its content is just itemized and the current criteria of facilities are not fit for the present situation because of the physical condition of the students in elementary, middle and high schools and the changing curriculum.

An Analysis of a Precedent of the Supreme Court about School Safety Accidents (학교 안전사고에 대한 대법원 판례 분석)

  • There are many students in school. So school safety accidents are happened by accident. But, if teachers know and understand about school safety accidents exactly, the school safety accidents can be reduced. The conclusion of this study is as follow. First, generally teacher has a duty and responsibility to protect and care students in educational activities. And teacher has a responsibility to protect and care students only in the cases of predictability. Second, teacher must do his/her best about a duty of attention. If teacher do his/her best about a duty of attention, he(she) has not the responsibility about the accident. Third, teacher needs to have more concern student who has a controversial figure. And teacher needs to have an evidence that he/she did his/her best for the student ordinary times. Fourth, the criteria of teacher's legal or illegal punishment to students is (1) the motivation and details for punishment, (2) the methods and degree for punishment, (3) a part of body for punishment, (4) the degree of damage for punishment. Fifth, teacher need to learn the program about school safety accidents systematically.

The Research of Existing Traffic Safety Facilities Condition for Enhancing in School Zone Safety (어린이 보호구역의 안전성 제고를 위한 교통 안전시설 실태연구)

  • Children are out future society members but they are not well cared to be safe from various accidents. This is due to facilities were installed upon the children's for adults which can not provide safe traffic environment for children's schooling who are not fare enough experience and matured. "The Rule of declaim for school zone and it's Management"was established in the year 1995 based on the article 11 by the "Road Traffic Low". And 15,136 school zone declared by the above rule. In this study, four elementary schools located in Nowon-gu are selected and analyzed about state of elementary school, scope of school zone, installation of street furniture, and safety signs. The analysis showed that scope of school zone is currently set in 150-meter though the regulation is within 300-meter radius. Therefore, expansion of the scope is required. It is necessary to take control of vehicle during commuting times and holograms which can be noticed in school zone have to be installed as well. Through these improvements, safety zone will be offered to children effectually.

A Study on the Safety Assessment of Elementary School Environment in Korea (우리나라 신도시 초등학교의 통학로 안전환경 비교분석에 관한 연구)

  • The new town was assumed that there is a difference between the country's elementary school environment. First, given the important elements of the school safety plan in order to verify this, and we plan to set up each of these elements by safety criteria. In the second chapter in order to achieve the objective of this study was to develop indicators to evaluate the safety of the school environment influences the safety of the school environment through the theoretical consideration. In Chapter 3, the difference in safety through the new elementary school survey of metropolitan areas was given a score per item per item depending on the evaluation criteria. The fourth section is the difference between safety school environment can be summarized as the following analytical results that the difference between the new city. The results of this study as follows: First, the characteristics of the elementary school environment showed a significant difference between the new town. Second, school location, terrain characteristics, bike paths and pedestrian to the installation, the safety of landscape installations, installing median barriers, traffic safety facilities, speed bumps, separation of pedestrian and vehicle circulation in the front door, scores of elements of the plan such as parking scheme there is a difference between the new town. Third, the introduction of elements of the plan such as Traffic calming or Traffic Island installation techniques was found lacking.
