  • We examined the effect of an artificial change of water temperature on the survival rate of Korean Scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis. As for the change of water temperature, the aspects appearing on the eastern coast of Korea during spring and summer were artificially prepared in the rearing aquarium in the laboratory. The survival rate of Scallop, due to the stimulus of a low water temperature in spring, was an average of 51.6%. Medium-sized scallops averaged 4.4%, which is lower than that of small-sized ones (85.82%) and large-sized ones (55.0%). The survival rate of Scallop, due to the stimulus of water at a high temperature in summer, was an average of 43.3%. As for small-sized scallops, they averaged a 46.7% survival rate which is lower than that of medium-sized scallops (60.0%). In general, the survival rate was lower in summer than in spring. Such results show that the death of Scallop, has close relevance to the change of water temperature. The low survival rate of medium-sized ones. Alternatively, medium-sized scallops have to get through winter, even if they cannot grow enough compared with large-sized ones. This is because large-sized scallops have already been adapted to the change of water temperature by getting through winter twice.

  • Although the removal efficiency of residual pesticides using tap water were ranged from -1.25 to $13.27\%$, the removal efficiencies of residual pesticides using both powder CaO and liquid CaO were $5.16\~l7.61,\;8.7\~41.59\%$, respectively. And those results showed much higher residual effect of the CaO washing than tap water washing. Natural CaO made by burning of scallop-shell considered to be a good reducing agent for pesticides. Furthermore, liquid CaO showed much higher removal efficiency than powder CaO. However, powder CaO also can be used as a good natural eliminator of pesticides in Mini-Tomato.

  • Contemporary architectural structures have diverse and complex forms. Such structural variety demands requisite performance from the connections in the steel structure so that the latter could resist a horizontal force, such as an earthquake. The connections are the all-important components that create the discontinuous form and that support stress concentration, determining the stiffness and toughness of the entire steel frame. In this study, a real-scale column-to-beam connection was constructed in the 600MPa-grade high-strength and high-performance steel, to test its behavior. Its material and welding characteristics were examined in this study, and its structural performance was analyzed by conducting seismic-resistance tests on the full-scale, cross-shaped column-to-beam welded connections with non-scallop, ordinary-scallop, and reinforced-scallop details. The weld ability of the high-strength, high-performance steel was also evaluated, and data regarding the seismic design for practical application were provided.

  • The study proposes the method to cancel the scallop to avoid fracture of the circumstance of the scallop at H shape column-to-beam connection and reinforce at beam flange two faces with the cover plates and rib. A total of four specimens were tested to enhance seismic performance of building structure by reducing the frequency of stress concentration and preventing the brittle fracture of scallop. For this purpose, four full-scale test specimens were made and loaded with quasi-static reversed cyclic loading. The main analytical parameters are panel-zone-strength ratio, yield strengths, initial stiffness, total plastic rotation, contribution of each element to total plastic rotation and energy dissipation capability. For the specimens tested under repeated loading, the experimental result was satisfied with seismic performance requirement as the Special Moment Frames (SMF). The analysis results show that all of the test specimens were found to have good performance to 4% story drift and satisfied the criteria for the plastic roation capacity of SMFs that is 0.03 rad. according to the 1997 AISC seismic provision.

  • Calcite and aragonite are polymorphs with the chemical formula CaCO3. In this study, natural limestone and aragonite, as well as scallop and clam shells composed of calcite and aragonite, were used as the pH-raising neutralizing agents for model solutions containing various heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn to simulate acidic drainage. According to the experimental results, pH-raising effect is higher in the shell materials compared to natural ores for both the calcite and aragonite types. Natural calcite and scallop shells are found to be the most suitable media for Cd removal, while over 95% efficiency for Cu and Fe removal was observed in all four media. Zn removal efficiency is higher in aragonite and clam shells, while Mn removal efficiency is relatively low, to be below 50%, for all four media. Overall, the heavy metal removal efficiency, except for Mn, was over 90%, in the order of Fe > Cu > Cd > Zn > Mn.

  • This study consists of static and fatigue tests to evaluate the behavior on the field splice joint of longitudinal rib in orthotropic steel deck specimens. Specifically, static and influence surface tests are performed for the stress distribution at the scallop area and high-strength bolt connection of longitudinal rib to examine the existence of handhole cover plate and the effect of eccentric loads. The ultimate strength of the field splice joint of longitudinal rib is obtained. In fatigue tests, cracks are observed at the scallop in the lower level test and the catastrophic failure of longitudinal rib is occurred following the failure of handhole cover plate in the higher level test. This study gives a basis for the better understanding of the field splice joint of longitudinal rib.

  • Myostatin (GDF8) is a growth factor that limits muscle tissue growth and development in vertebrates. We isolated a myostatin-like gene (Py-MSTN) from the marine invertebrate, the scallop Patinopecten yessoensis. Py-MSTN was highly expressed in the adductor muscle and in the gill unexpectedly. Amino acid analysis showed that Py-MSTN has 49% amino acid sequence identity and 64% similarity to human myostatin (Hs-MSTN), and 42% identity and 61% similarity to myoglianin, the only invertebrate homolog. These results indicated that Py-MSTN may be functionally similar to the vertebrate MSTN than the invertebrate homolog. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that Py-MSTN is an ancestral form of vertebrate MSTN and GDF11 and does not belong to other $TGF-{\beta}$ family members. Molecular modeling showed that Py-MSTN exhibits a similar tertiary structure to mammalian BMP7, a member of $TGF-{\beta}$ family. In addition, the amino acid residues which contact extracellular domain of the receptor were relavively conserved. Given these results, we propose that Py-MSTN is a functionally active member of the $TGF-{\beta}$ family and is involved In muscle growth and regulation.

  • To evaluate the aquaculture potential of a subtrophic noble scallop, Chlamys nobilis in Korean waters, nursery growth of the species was studied on two remote Jeju coasts, Jigwido and Ongpori. The early growth performance of the first 60 days after settlement was expressed as: $SL=0.1664e^{0.0579x}$ ($r^2=0.924$), where x stands for days after settlement and SL for shell length. The early spats sized 1 mm in average shell length became $4.1{\pm}0.8\;mm$ after a month of nursery culture, thereafter grew to $13.0{\pm}1.9$, $23.1{\pm}3.1$, $30.3{\pm}4.3$, and $33.6{\pm}5.2\;mm$ for consecutive 4 months in Jigwido coastal area. Mean growth gains (mean daily gains in parenthesis) were $76.7{\pm}7.7$ ($165.6{\mu}m$), $73.3{\pm}7.3$ ($154.0{\mu}m$), $69.4{\pm}8.4$ ($140.0{\mu}m$), and $68.7{\pm}8.5\;mm$ ($137.4{\mu}m$), in depths of 5, 10, 15, and 20 m, respectively. The growth rate was significantly decreased as cultured in deeper place (p < 0.05). As culturing density was higher, growth performance of the scallop was decreased in both locations. Overall, in our preliminary study, the growth performance of scallop in Korean waters was not better than that in Japan, but it seems to be worth doing further study for successful introduction to Korean waters.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the clinical implications of scallop penumbra width that comes from multileaf collimator(MLC) effect by the daily routine patient setup error. Materials and Methods : The anales of $0^{circ},{\;}15^{circ},{\;}30^{circ},{\;}45^{circ},{\;}60^{circ},{\;}and{\;}75^{circ}$ inclined -radiation blocked fields were generated using the both conventional cerrobend block and the MLC. Film dosimetry in the phantom were performed to measure penumbral widths of differences between the dose distributions from the cerrobend block and those of respect the MLC. The patient setup error effect on scallop penumbra was simulated with respect to the table of setup error distribution. Same procedures are repeated for the cerrobend block generated field. Results : There are penumbral widths of to 3mm difference between the dose distributioins from two kinds of field shaping tools, the conventional block and the MLC with 4mm setup error model and resolution of 1cm leaf at the isocenter. Conclusion : We need not additive margin for MLC, if planning target volume is selected according to the recommendation of ICRU 50. For particular cases, we can include the target volume with less than 3mm additive margin.

  • Purpose of present study is to investigate the effects of thread pitch in coronal portion in scalloped implant with 2 different connections on loading stress using 3 dimensional finite element analysis. Scalloped implant with 4 different thread pitches (0.4mm, 0.5mm, 0.6, and 0.7mm) in the coronal part was modeled with 2 different implant-abutment connections. Platform matching connection had the same implant and abutment diameter so that they were in flush contact at the periphery while platform mismatching connection had smaller abutment diameter than implant so that their connection was made away from periphery of implant-bone interface. Occlusal loading of 100N force was applied vertically and 30 degree obliquely to all 8 models and the maximum von Mises bone stress was identified. Loading stress as highly concentrated in cortical bone. Platform mismatching scalloped implant with small thread pitch (0.4mm) model had consistently lowest maximum von Mises bone stress in vertical and oblique loads. Platform matching model had lowest maximum von Mises bone stress with 0.6mm thread pitch in vertical load and with 0.4mm thread pitch in oblique load. Platform mismatching connection had important roles in reducing maximum von Mises bone stress. Scalloped implant with smaller coronal thread pitch showed trend of reducing maximum von Mises bone stress under load.
