  • In this paper, an efficient single dehazing algorithm is proposed based on linear transformation by assuming that a linear relationship exists in saturation component between the haze image and haze-free image. First, we analyze the linearity of saturation channel, estimate the medium transmission map in terms of the saturation component. Then, the intensity of haze-free image is assumed by using CLAHE to enhance contrast of haze image. Experimental results demonstrate that proposed algorithm can naturally recover the image, especially can remove color distortion caused by conventional methods. Therefore, our approach is competitive with other state-of-the art single dehazing methods.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the one-time aerobic exercise on pulmonary function, oxygen saturation, and smoking in male college students in their 20's. Methods: The experiment was performed on 11 healthy men who had no musculoskeletal or neurological diseases and who smoked. The subjects performed an aerobic exercise for 30 minutes, using a step box. Before and after the exercise, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume for one second (FEV1), and oxygen saturation were measured. Results: Between the two measurements, there were no significant differences in oxygen saturation (p>.05). However, the differences in FVC and FEV1 were statistically significant (p<.05). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that a one-time aerobic exercise improves pulmonary function.

  • The object of this paper is to study the shear characteristics of the weathered granite soil. To this end, a series of consolidated undrained triaxial compression tests are carried out to investigate the shear parameters-cohesion and internal friction angle-for the degree of saturation and degree of weathering. From the results, it is found that the shear parameters of weathered granite soil are influenced on the degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance. Especially, internal friction angle is more influenced on the upper factors than cohesion. And shear parameters are more acted on the degree of saturation than the degree of weathering in the test range. It is, therefore, recommended that must be considered the conditions of granite soil-degree of saturation, degree of weathering and disturbance etc-in case of the calculation of bearing capacity, stability analysis and other designs with shear parameters.

  • An inverter output power control based power factor correction (PFC) strategy is being extensively used for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives in appliances because such a strategy can considerably reduce the cost and size of the inverter. In this strategy, PFC circuits are removed and large electrolytic DC-link capacitors are replaced with small film capacitors. In this application, the PMSM d-q axes currents are controlled to produce ripples, the frequency of which is twice that of the AC main voltage, to obtain a high power factor at the AC mains. This process indicates that the PMSM operates under periodic magnetic saturation conditions. This paper proposes a back electromotive-force (back-EMF) estimator for the high-speed sensorless control of PMSM operating under periodic magnetic saturation conditions. The transfer function of the back-EMF estimator is analyzed to examine the effect of the periodic magnetic saturation on the accuracy of the estimated rotor position. A simple compensation method for the estimated position errors caused by the periodic magnetic saturation is also proposed in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally verified with the use of a PMSM drive for a vacuum cleaner centrifugal fan, wherein the maximum operating speed reaches 30,000 rpm.

  • In this study, changes in verbal cognitive performance, blood oxygen saturation and heart rate due to 30% concentration oxygen supply were observed. Five male (24.6±0.9) and five female (22.2±1.9) college students were asked to perform 28 verbal cognitive tasks of the same difficulty during two types of oxygen (concentration 21%, 30%) administration. The experimental sequence consisted of Rest1 (1 min.), Control (1 min.), Task (4 min.), and Rest2 (4 min.) and the physiological signals such as blood oxygen saturation and heart rate were measured throughout the stages. The experimental result showed that the performance increased significantly at 30%'s concentration of oxygen rather than 21%'s, which shows oxygen supply has positive influence on verbal cognitive performance. When 30% concentration oxygen is supplied, the oxygen saturation in the blood significantly increased comparing to 21%. The heart rate showed no significant difference. Significant correlations were found between changes in oxygen saturation and cognitive performance. It is suggested that 30% oxygen can stimulate brain activation by increasing actual blood oxygen concentration in the process of cognitive performance.

  • Purpose: To investigate the effect of nonnutritive sucking(NNS) on the heart rate, oxygen saturation, and behavioral state of premature infants. Method: From December 15, 2004 to February 15, 2005, 20 premature infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care units were assigned to an experimental group (10), or a control group (10). Circular pacifiers for premature infants (Johnson, U.S.A.), which had been packed with $2{\times}2$ gauzes to create a vacuum, were used for 5 minutes, one hour after feeding for 5 days. Heart rates and oxygen saturation were checked every minute for 10 minutes once a day and behavioral states were monitored through video recording at the same time. Results: Changes in heart rate, oxygen saturation and behavioral state were found to show significant differences between the experimental group and the control group according to the point in time, and interactions were found between the group and the point of time. However, for behavioral state, no significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group after the NNS was removed. Conclusion: From the results of this study it is possible to conclude that NNS is a positive intervention to bring about increased oxygen saturation and soothed behavioral state for premature infants.

  • The contrast of the intensity components of color images usually needs to be improved in order to enhance the visual quality of color images. However, pure color regions can be saturated due to the excessive enhancement of that color. In this paper, a new method for enhancing the visual quality of color images using saturation components in the HSI color space is proposed, and the same enhancement technique in the YCbCr color space is proposed. Computer simulations show that the proposed method provides improved visual quality compared to the conventional methods.

  • In this study, model tests were performed to investigate the settlement characteristics of the rock/soil mixture subgrade with the many portion of mudstone due to the cyclic train loading in high-speed railway. Specially, from the tests varying initial degree of saturation, effects of increment of the degree of saturation in the subgrade due to rainfall or elevation of ground water table under cyclic train loading on the deformation characteristics were analyzed. From the results, in the low degree of saturation, settlement converged to some value. However, in the condition of degree of saturation larger than some value, settlement rapidly increased. Therefore, it was found that it is important to maintain the degree of saturation of subgrade below the specific level to prevent the settlement of subgrade.

  • Blood oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) is so important to be called bio-signal of the fifth. The measurement of blood oxygen saturation based on broad-ban light source has advantages of simple testing facility and easy understanding. This paper proposes a LabVIEW program which measures blood oxygen saturation based on broad-band light source. It combines LabVIEW and MATLAB, utilizing different light absorptions of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin in the visual wavelength range of 450nm-750nm to determine blood oxygen saturation. In order to improve accuracy through reducing the impact of hand shaking, the probe is fixed to the motor stage and then move a constant distance between the probe and the sample to be measured. Experimental results show that the proposed method noticeably increases the accuracy and saves time compared with the conventional methods.
