한국 남서해안 다도해 해상국립공원의 하계 해조상 (Summer Algal Flora of Dadohae National Park, Southwestern Coast of Korea)

  • The summer algal flora and community of 9 islands in Dadohae National Park, southwestern coast of Korea, were investigated from June to September 2008. A total of 81 species (13 green, 22 brown and 46 red algae) of marine algae were identified. Among 9 islands, the number of species observed was the highest as 65 species at Jindo and the least as 37 species at Hongdo. The dominant species were Enteromorpha compressa, Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium amansii, Caulacanthus okamurae, Gloiopeltis furcata, and Symphyocladia latiuscula. The algal zonation of intertidal zone was figured out by Gloiopeltis furcata, Ishige okamurae, Caulacanthus okamurae-Enteromorpha compressa, Sargassum thungergii-Gelidium amansii, Symphyocladia latiuscula from upper to lower zone. The flora investigated could be classified into six functional groups such as coarsely branched form (38.1%), filamentous form (24.7%), sheet form (11.3%), thick leathery form (13.9%), jointed calcarious form (6.3%) and crustose form algae (5.7%). R/P and (R+C)/P values were 2.2 and 2.8, respectively. A cluster analysis of species occurrence was suggested that the number of marine algal species was different from greatly among the sampling sites.

External Application of Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone, Isolated from Sargassum muticum, Suppresses Inflammatory Responses in a Mouse Model of Atopic Dermatitis

  • Allergic skin inflammation such as atopic dermatitis is characterized by skin barrier dysfunction, edema, and infiltration with various inflammatory cells. The anti-inflammatory effects of Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone, isolated from Sargassum muticum, have been described in many diseases, but the mechanism by which it modulates the immune system is poorly understood. In this study, the ability of Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone to suppress allergic reactions was investigated using a mouse model of atopic dermatitis. The Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone-treated group showed significantly decreased immunoglobulin E in serum. Also, Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone treatment resulted in a smaller lymph node size with reduced the thickness and length compared to the induction group. In addition, Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone inhibited the expression of interleukin-4, interferon-gamma and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and ionomycin-stimulated lymphocytes. These results suggest that Apo-9'-fucoxanthinone may be a useful therapeutic strategy for treating chronic inflammatory diseases.

남해의 하계 해조군집 -1. 조간대- (Summer Algal Communities in the Rocky Shore of the South Sea of Korea -1. Intertidal Communities-)

  • 본 조사는 남해의 10개 도서의 조간대 해조군집의 구조와 특성을 조사하였다. 그 결과 군집의 구조는 상, 중, 하부의 뚜렷한 층위구조로 구성되고, 상부와 중부의 중요종은 조사지간에 매우 유사하였다. 하부의 중요종은 지역간에 차이가 있고, 다양한 종에 의해 대표되었다. 상부의 대표종은 막상 또는 사상형의 Gloiopeltis spp., Gelidium divaricatum, Porphyra suborbiculata, Nemalion vermiculare였으며, 분포범위는 해조분포 상한에서 따개비와 홍합류 층의 하한이었다. 중부의 대표종은 Corallina pilulifera, Chondria crassicaulis, Hizikia fusiformis이며, 분포범위는 평균해면 부근이었다. 하부의 범위는 중부의 하한에서 기준면까지이고, Sargassum sagamianum, Laurencia spp., Symphyocladia latiuscula, Chondrus spp., Pachymeniopsis lanceolata, Gigartina spp.가 조사지간에 공통성이 높은 중요종으로 나타났다.

오동도 해조군락에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Algal Communities of Odongdo, Southern Coast of Korea)

  • 본 연구는 1982년 6월부터 1983년 5월까지 전남 여수반도 남단에 위치한 오동도 해조군락의 특성을 밟히기 위하여 5개의 line transect를 설치하고 연간 계절별로 조사된 자료를 분석 하였다. 해조류의 수직분포는 상부군이 Gelidium divaricatum, Enteromorpha linza, Porphyra yezoensis, Scytosiphon lomentaria, Blidingia nana, Ectocarpus confervoides, 중부군이 Ulva pertusa, Chondria crassicaulis, 그리고 하부군은 Sargossum sagamianum, Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum thunbergii 및 Gelidium amansii 등의 홍조류로 대표되었다. 출현해조의 종수와 피도는 4월에 최대이고 8월에 최소로되며 종별 우점도의 변화는 연중 출현종은 10월에, 일계절 출현종은 1월 또는 4월에 각각 최대치를 나타내었다. 유사도지수에 따른 5개 transect의 cluster analysis 결과 내만성군과 외양성의 2군으로 분류되었으며 본 지역은 남해안 중${\cdot}$동부 군락에 해당되는 Myelophycus simplex alliance의 Colpomenia sinuosa-Ecklonia cava association에 속한다고 본다.

한국 남해안 가학리의 해조류와 군집구조의 월별변화 (Monthly Changes of Marine Benthic Algae and Community Structure at Gahakri, Southern Coast of Korea)

  • 한국 남해안 가학리의 해조상과 군집구조를 밝히기 위하여 1993년 9월에서 1994년 8월까지 매월 조사하였다. 조사결과 채집 동정된 해조류는 녹조류 11종, 갈조류 15종 및 홍조류 61종이었다 해조상 특성은 출현종을 기준으로 혼합성으로 밝혀졌다. 연중 우점종은 불등풀가사리이며, 준우점종으로는 지충이, 구멍갈파래 및 톳이었다. 수직분포는 조간대 상부로부터 하부까지 불등풀가사리-작은구슬산호말, 바위수염, 참풀가사리 (5월$\~$10월), 미끌풀, 지충이-톳, 구멍갈파래, 애기돌가사리, 참까막살이 분포하였다.

다양한 해조류를 첨가하여 제조한 밥의 in vitro 항산화 활성 (In vitro Antioxidant Activity of Cooked Rice Containing Various Seaweeds)

  • An emerging interest in healthy eating has led to an increase in the consumption of rice mixed with various types of grains. Cooked rice was prepared with five different seaweeds, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum fulvellum, Enteromorpha compressa, Undaria pinnatifida, and Gracilaria verrucosa, and the antioxidant activity was measured. In addition, the antioxidant activities of 80% ethanol and methanol extracts of the five seaweeds were compared. Total phenolic content (TPC), total reducing power (TRP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) cation radical scavenging activities of the ethanol extracts were higher than those of the methanol extracts. The TPC of raw seaweed ethanol extracts was from 7.58 to 26.27 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g. The antioxidant activities of both extracts of Hizikia fusiformis were the highest among the five seaweeds, and the antioxidant activities of the cooked rice were lower than those of the raw seaweed extracts. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of cooked white rice, mixed grains, barley, and a mixture of white rice and barely added with Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum fulvellum and Undaria pinnatifida were 3.17, 23.12, 31.11 and 10.66%, respectively. These results demonstrate the addition of seaweeds to cooked rice helps to improve the antioxidant activity compared to white rice alone.

한국 제주도 남부 조하대의 해조상 및 군집구조 (Flora and Community Structure of Subtidal Zone in South Jeju, Korea)

  • This study was carried out to examine the species composition and community structure of benthic marine algae at the subtidal zones of Daepo, Wolpyeong, Wimi and Jigwido in south Jeju, Korea from March to December 2009. Total 87 species including 14 green algae, 23 brown algae, and 50 red algae were collected and identified. Among these species, 9 species were found throughout the year. The dominant species which contributed significantly to the total biomass were Ecklonia cava, Undaria pinnatifida, Peyssonnelia capensis, Cladophora wrightiana, Sargassum serratifolium, Grateloupia angusta, Codium coactum, Plocamium cartilagineum, and Sargassum macrocarpum. The average seaweed biomass was 7,578.2 g wet weight $m^{-2}$ and maximum biomass was recorded seasonally in spring ($9,627.6g\;m^{-2}$), while minimum was recorded in autumn ($5,963.0g\;m^{-2}$), by sites maximum biomass Jigwido ($12,889.9g\;m^{-2}$), while minimum was recorded in Daepo ($5,403.8g\;m^{-2}$). The seasonal and regional flora were investigated as six functional groups. A coarsely branched form was the most dominant functional group constituting from 42.9~52.8% of the total flora. Ecological state group (ESG) II, as an opportunistic species, including sheet form, filamentous form, and coarsely branched form, consisted of 31~59 species, constituting 77.5~84.9%.

한국산 해조류의 어류병원성세균에 대한 항균활성 (Antimicrobial Activities of Korean Marine Algae against Fish Pathogenic Bacteria)

  • 본 연구에서는 주요 어병세균인 Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., E. tarda 및 V. anguillarum에 대한 30 종의 해조류 추출물의 항균활성을 검색하였다. 그 결과, C. officinalis, D. simplex, G. furcata, G. lanceolata 및 G. turuturu의 경우는 그람 양성균인 Staphylococcus sp.에 대하여, 그리고 S. thunbergii 및 P. morrowii 는 그람 음성균인 E. tarda와 V. anguillarum에 대하여 항균활성을 나타냄을 밝혔다. 그 중, 가장 우수한 항균활성을 나타낸 P. morrowii의 항균활성분획물인 90% MeOH 분획물은 E. tarda의 증식을 매우 효과적으로 저해하며, MIC는 1 mg/ml으로 측정되었다. 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 pH 조건하에서도 항균활성이 유지되었으며 분획물의 주요활성 성분은 할로겐 함유 phenol계 화합물일 것으로 추정된다.

Experimental Design in Laboratory for Ecological Restoration in the Slag Dumping Area

  • Experimental design for ecological restoration approach was investigated from the P' company's slag dumping area with higher pH value. The degree of pH recovery was measured by the injection of carbon dioxide from the LNG exhaust gas, and the residual carbon, for example, calcium and carbonate which can be controlled by artificial seaweed beds. The degree of adaptability from 3 algaes (Undaria pinnatifida, Sargassum horneri and Ecklonia stolonifera) and uptake nutrient function of Ecklonia stolonifera chosen in the first treatment were measured in the laboratory to determine the transplanting algae in artificial seaweed beds. The higher value of pH was decreased to 7.0~8.5 by injection of LNG exhaust gas with flow rate $20\;m^3/min$. In the experiment design at laboratory, the upper part of frond of Undaria pinnatifida and Sargassum horneri began to decay, and the color changed after 10 days. However, those of Ecklonia stolonifera were after 14~20 days. The uptake rate of nutrient from Ecklonia stolonifera was higher than those of other algaes, and those was similar pattern in the control (e.g. seawater); The DIN concentration uptake of Ecklonia stolonifera was $1.88\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in leachate, but $2.19\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in seawater. However, the ${PO_4}^3$-P concentration uptake was $0.18\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in leachate, but $0.31\;{\mu}g/L/hr$ avg. in seawater. These result indicated Ecklonia stolonifera uptaked these nutrients in the leachate as well as in seawater, and it may suggested for this species to transplant for constructing artificial seaweed beds.

Evaluation of Antitumor and Antioxidant Activity of Sargassum tenerrimum against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma in Mice

  • Context: In the last half century, discovering, developing and introducing of clinical agents from marine sources have seen great successes, with examples including the anti-cancer compound trabectedin. However, with increasing need for new anticancer drugs, further exploration for novel compounds from marine organism sources is strongly justified. Objective: The major aim of this study was to evaluate the antitumor and antioxidant potential of Sargassum tenerrimum J.Agardh (Sargassaceae) on Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC) in Swiss albino mice. Materials and Methods: An ethanol extract of S. tenerrimum (EEST) from whole algae was used to evaluate cytotoxicity followed by in vivo assessment of toxicity, using biochemical parameters including hepatic and non-hepatic enzymes. Antioxidant properties were examined in animals bearing EAC treated with daily oral administration of 100-300 mg/kg extract suspension. Results: Antitumor effects of EEST in EAC bearing mice was observed with LD50 1815 mg/kg. Parameters like body weight, tumor volume, packed cell volume, tumor cell count, mean survival time and increase in life span in animals in the EAC bearing animals treated with EEST 300 mg/kg was comparable with control group. Significant differences were also seen with changes in total protein content, hepatic enzymes contents, MDA level, and free radical scavenging enzymes in untreated vs. EEST treated group animals. Conclusions: Evaluation of antioxidant enzymes and hepatic enzymes in the EAC animal model treated with EEST exhibited similar effects as the positive control drug 5-flurouracil. S. tenerrimum extracts contain effective antioxidants with significant antitumor activity.
