More time is required for consolidating soft clay when its hydraulic conductivity around the vertical drains is reduced by soil disturbance. One of the methods to be proposed to solve such problem is the electro-osmotic flow application. This study presents the experimental results of model tests using a modified oedometer and a large-scale cylinder with a sand drain. Results show that the development of negative excessive pore water pressure due to the DC electrical field in saturated clay can be transformed to additional loads causing more consolidation settlement.
To examine the general features of a sand-clay composite triaxial test by making specimen varying ratios of diameters (dw) of sand columns that are installed on the soft ground as drains to diameters (de) of drain zone so called drainage space ratio (n=de/dw), densities of the granular columns, and strength of soft soils round around. I also conducted a test to research the reinforcement ability and effects of the ground when the granular columns are wrapped with supplementary materials such as geotextile. The results of the triaxial compression test showed that the shear strength increase is much big when the granular columns are wrapped with supplementary materials, while the shear strength increases as the diameter and density of the granular column increase in general. Also the drainage space ratio shows a distinct increase just below 3 and a similar shear behavior to sand is appeared. The pore water pressure coefficient decreases as the drainage space ratio decreases, however, when the drainage space ratio is less than 3~4, it declines significantly as shown in the results of shear behavior.
Damages by vibration and noise due to the construction performance are increasing. The rise of construction demand and enlargement of equipments are major reasons of this damage. As a result, the enmity of the people is provoked and this appears to be an obstacle of construction work. Especially, in case of ground improvement construction. Casing pipe is inserted into the Sand Drain, Sand Compaction Pile and Vibrated Crushed-stone Pile by vibration power when carrying out. Hence, a pillar is formed and it creates vibration and noise. This causes a lot of restrictions to construction condition. The low Vibration and low noise construction equipments uses earth auger and hydrulic cylinder for insertion and chopping operation instead of vibro hammer, which is the source of vibration and noise. This minimize ground disturbanceand decrease vibration and noise successfully, but increase chopping effect greatly. Thus, this new equipment is not only suitable for environment but also excellent engineering method of construction.

Stone column is one of the soft ground improvement method, which enhances ground conditions through ground water draining, settlement reducing and bearing capacity increasing complexly by using crushed stone instead of sand in general vertical drain methods. In recent, general construction material, sand is in short of supply, because of the unbalance of demand and supply. Also, the bearing capacity improving effect of stone column method is needed in many cases so the bearing capacity estimation is considered as important point. Nevertheless, adequate estimation methods to predict bearing capacity of stone column considering stone column and improving ground behavior reciprocally is not yet prepared. To contribute this situation, bearing capacity behavior of stone column were simulated as numerically on various property cases of crushed stone and surrounded ground. Through the numerical analysis of simulation results, bearing capacity behavior prediction formula was suggested. This formula was verified by comparing the prediction result with in situ test.

This study aims at predicting the behavior of saturated soft clayey foundation subjected to earth structure loads such as tidal dike, embankment etc. by using Biot's consolidation equation coupled with elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. To validate the computer program developed b author, a case study was performed for the site of Kwang-yang steel works improved by sand drain, where since the beginning of the works, field measurements(settlement, lateral displacement and excess pore water pressure) had been accurately achieved. Comparisons between numerical results and observation values were carried out. The main results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Settlement and lateral displacement between numerical and observation values show satisfactory accordance. 2. As for the exess pre water pressure, numerical results appear to be larger than observation values, which may be due to the existence of sand seams which were not found during soil investigation. 3. Useful data available for failure prediction of soft foundation can be secured by examining lateral displacement, settlement, exess pore water pressure and stress paths.

In this reaserch, the comparison between numerical results and field measurments including settlement, heaving and lateral displacement, in the interchange construction works on soft ground. Sand drain was performed for the improvement of the site and steel pipe piles driven for the pier foundation of interchange. The steel pipe piles were replaced to the equivalent steel sheet pile wall. Biot's equation was coupled with elasto-viscoplastic model for the multi-purpose program of soft foundation. Finally countemeasures for future possible lateral displacement and settlement were exmanined.
In this study the pilot test of CGS as injection method by low slump mortar was performed and the results were analyzed in order to find out the application of this method and effect of settlement restraint. The site far pilot test is adjacent to apartments supported by pile foundations. Sand drain method was performed previously as countermeasures against settlement, but settlement occur continuously because this ground is very soft. Site investigations such as SPT, DCPT and vane shear test were performed to determine the characteristics of ground improvement. Field measurements and FDM analysis were performed on purpose to find out the displacement of ground during injection works. From the results of this study, CGS method can be optimized by the control of diagram, space, depth, injection material, and injection pressure. CGS improved soft ground compositely by the bearing effect of CGS columns and reinforcement of adjacent ground. Considering that increase of N value is about 2.1, CGS can be considered as an effective method to increase the bearing capacity as well as to stop the settlement of soft ground. It is also expected to be economic and effective in improvement of ground when it is used in applicable sites.
The vertical drain method recently being used in Korea is one of the popular soft ground improvement methods, and it is divided into the sand drain method, the pack drain method, the paper drain method, and the PBD method according to the drainage. However, these methods generate the disturbed zone called the smear zone when the drainage is penetrated into the in-situ ground. The characteristics of the smear zone generated cause the problems that the coefficient of permeability decreases, and then the consolidation time in the design becomes longer than expected. Even though the coefficient of horizontal consolidation and the coefficient of permeability in the smear zone are very important design factors directly influencing the degree of consolidation, in the existing studies, these coefficients have been empirically derived by the coefficient of vertical consolidation and used for the design. However, in case that these coefficients derived by the coefficient of vertical consolidation are applied to the actual design, a loss of the duration of construction and a loss of economical efficiency can be happened because of the inaccuracy of the coefficient of horizontal consolidation and the coefficient of permeability. Hence, in this study, in order to understand such influence, the laboratory test was carried out so as to reasonably determine the coefficient of permeability and the coefficient of consolidation in diverse ground conditions. Then, the range of smear effect on clay and silt was estimated with monitoring data through the laboratory test.
The purposes of this study are to investigate the mechanical prospeities of the inter mediate soils through consolidation tests and triaxial compression shear tests. The intermediate soils used in this study are artificial soils which are composed of sea clay, sand and it's crushed component. The relationship between plastic index and mechanical prosperties (permeability and compressibility) is investigated through series of consoli dation tests. Strain hardening phenomenon under shearing is explored based on several overconsideration ratios and strain rates in undrained shear tests. To make a comparative study difference of drain condition and strain rate, drain shear tests are performed with overconsolidation ratio.
Recently, new development projects are being carried out with the soft ground located along the West coast and the South coast. As soft grounds have complex engineering properties that the load bearing capacity is low and high compressibility, it needs to solve this problems Prior to structures are constructed by the method of improvement of soft ground. The sand mat is usually being used for improvement of soft ground as a horizontal drain material and loading base. But, as the volume is enormous and an amount of demanded sand is increased, it is state of short in supply. This paper presents the feasibility study to use of precious slag ball instead of sand mat as the replacing material through the basic soil property tests, the medium of discharge capacity test and analysis of settlement character.
