  • This paper describes the effect of transient state in underground transmission and distribution lines installed together in the same tunnel. Two systems installed in the same tunnel are operated by the common grounding. This paper analyzed that how much one of the two kinds of systems influences the other systems during the transient state by EMTP/ATPDraw. Single line-to-ground fault and lightning surge were selected in transient state condition. These cases were simulated variously according to the variation of common grounding magnitude, fault location and lightning surge magnitude. It is evaluated that the analyzed results will be used for establishment and operating materials of common grounding in the same tunnel.

  • Newly updated wing shape to apply small vertical wind turbine is tested with digital wind tunnel in this study. Digital wind tunnel is designed to reduce length of wind tunnel and also to maximize its area of test section. Same DC fans of ninety six are installed in the end side of its rectangular duct and air can be blown out to the other side to have uniform flow with same electricity power. New wing is concluded using experimental plan and analysis with 4-parameters and 3-levels, and tested with digital wind tunnel. It shows better performance in lift to drag ratio, and can applied to the wind turbine for the higher torque and lower thrust.

  • This paper proposes an integrated safety assessment method that can take multiple sources data into consideration based on a data fusion approach. Data cleaning using the Kalman filter method (KF) was conducted first for monitoring data from each sensor. The inclination data from the four tilt sensors of the same monitoring section have been associated to synchronize in time. Secondly, the finite element method (FEM) model was established to physically correlate the external forces with various structural responses of the shield tunnel, including the measured inclination. Response surface method (RSM) was adopted to express the relationship between external forces and the structural responses. Then, the external forces were updated based on the in situ monitoring data from tilt sensors using the extended Kalman filter method (EKF). Finally, mechanics parameters of the tunnel lining were estimated based on the updated data to make an integrated safety assessment. An application example of the proposed method was presented for an urban tunnel during a nearby deep excavation with multiple source monitoring plans. The change of tunnel convergence, bolt stress and segment internal forces can also be calculated based on the real time deformation monitoring of the shield tunnel. The proposed method was verified by predicting the data using the other three sensors in the same section. The correlation among different monitoring data has been discussed before the conclusion was drawn.

  • Elasto-plastic and Visco-elastic sytress analyses were conducted for standard cross-section of subway tunnel in Seoul . Considering the procedure of excavation and reinforcement, excavated region was divided to multiple elements. And the progress of tunnel is simulated to be the removal of a series of layerd elements by means of diminishing the stiffness of the portion progressively. Another method is to be free of stress due to excavation instead of stiffness. In the analysis multiple element method was conducted with ADINA program, the stiffness removal method was adopted . For the same model, stress release method was carried out with Visco-Elastic Analysis program developed in Rock mechanics laboratory, Seoul National University(SNU-VBA) . When upper tunnel excavated, displacements in roof were same for two results, but when bottom tunnel removed completely , displacement changes of rock in the stress release method exhibited very small amount compared with stiffness removal method.

  • This paper concerns a numerical investigation on the effect of construction sequence on three-arch (3-Arch) tunnel behavior. A three-arch tunnel section adopted in a railway tunnel construction site was considered in this study. A calibrated 3D finite element model was used to conduct a parametric study on a variety of construction scenarios. The results of analyses were examined in terms of tunnel and ground surface settlements, shotcrete lining stresses, loads and stresses developed in center column in relation to the tunnel construction sequence. In particular, the effect of the side tunnel construction sequence on the structural performance of the center structure was fully examined. The results indicated that the load, thus stress, in the center structure can be smaller when excavating two side tunnels from opposite direction than excavating in the same direction. Also revealed was that no face lagging distance between the two side tunnels impose less ground load to the center structure. Fundamental governing mechanism of three-arch tunnel behavior is also discussed based on the results.

  • In general, the booming noise intensity at tunnel exit is strongly related to the gradient of the compression wave front created by high speed train entering the tunnel. This paper presents some results in relation with the compression wave front produced when the high speed train enters a tunnel. Four kinds of tunnel entrance shape with real dimensions were studied to investigate the formation of compression wave front inside tunnel by train entering tunnel. Computations were carried out using three-dimensional compressible Euler equation with vanishing viscosity and conductivity of fluid. According to the results, the flow disturbances occured at tunnel entrance were eliminated by tunnel hood with same cross sectional area. The compression wave front is formed completely at 30-40m from tunnel entrance. The maximum pressure gradient of compression wave front is reduced by 29.8% for the inclined tunnel hood and reduced by 21.5% for the tunnel hood with holes at the top face with tunnel without hood. The length of the inclined hood is 15m and the length of the hood with holes is 20m.

  • Lighting in the tunnel makes for safe driving of cars taking into account of change in perception arisen in the sight of drivers of cars entering into and passing tunnel, drivers' mental reaction and unique circumstances of a tunnel. There are many variables to satisfy safe driving in the tunnel. Since tunnels are mostly located in the mountainous area and illumination at the approach part differs largely depending on the surrounding circumstances, a standard different from that of common lighting is applied. An accidentin the tunnel, which involves same danger as in underground, may lead to a large mishap. Therefore, control by sensors inside and outside of tunnel ensures prevention of an accident through control of illumination at the approach part and inside of tunnel. It is very important in the aspect of saving energy since such control is available to reduce depreciation factor resulted from early excessive intensity of illumination.

  • In case of a fire outbreak in a uni-directional road tunnel, the flow of traffic immediately behind the fire disaster will be stalled all the way back to the entrance of the tunnel. Furthermore, when the vehicle passengers try to flee away from the fire toward the entrance of the tunnel, the extremely hot fume that propagates in the same direction will be fatal to the multitudes evacuating, but may also cause damage to the ventilation equipments and the vehicles, compounding the evacuation process. This paper will present the 3-dimensional modelling analysis of the preventive measures of such a fume propagation in the same direction as the evacuating passengers. For the analysis, the fire hazard was assumed to be a perfect combustion of methane gas injected through the 1 m X 2 m nozzle in the middle of the tunnel, and the product of $CO_2$ as the indicator of the fume propagation. From the research results, when the fire hazard occurred in middle of the 400 m road tunnel, the air density decreased around the fire point, and the maximum temperatures were 996 K and 499 K at 210 m and 350 m locations, respectively, 60 seconds after fire disaster occurred, when the fumes were driven out only towards the exit-direction of the tunnel. By tracing the increase of $CO_2$ level over 1% mole fraction, the minimum longitudinal ventilation velocity was found to be 2.40 m/sec. Furthermore, through Analysis of the temperature distribution graphs, and observation of the cross-sectional distribution of $CO_2$ over 1% mole fraction, it was found that the fume did not mix with the air, but rather moved far in a laminar flow towards exit of the tunnel.

  • When the ground is excavated adjacent to the existing tunnel, which is loaded by the surcharge on the ground surface, the tunnel stability would be very sensitive to the deformation of the ground induced by the horizontal displacement of braced wall. The stability of the existing surcharged tunnel could be controlled by pre-loading on the braced wall. In this paper, it was investigated, if it would be possible to keep the existing surcharged tunnel stable by preventing the horizontal displacement of a braced wall by imposing the pre-loading during the ground excavation. For this purpose, large scale model tests were performed in a scale 1/10 at the test pit which was 2.0m in width and 6.0m in height and 4.0m in length. Isotropic test ground was constructed homogeneously by wet sand. Model tunnel was constructed in the test ground. Surcharge was loaded on the ground surface above the tunnel. During the tests, the behavior of model tunnel and model braced wall was measured. Numerical analyses were also performed in the same condition as the tests. And their results were compared to that of the model tests. Consequently, the effect of a surcharge could be compensated by imposing the pre-loading on the braced wall. The existing tunnel and the braced wall could be kept stable by preventing the horizontal displacement of the braced wall through pre-loading, although the tunnel is surcharged.
