Epidemiological characteristics of a total of 48 swine herd with diarrhea or a history of diarrhea in Gyeongsang-do between 1999 and 2000 were performed to evaluate the prevalence of Salmonella spp., their serotypes and antibiotic resistance patterns with respect to the different stages of swine production system. A total of 139 Salmonella spp. (21%) were isolated from 662 fecal samples and the overall herd prevalence of Salmonella spp. ranged from 12.5% to 88%. The average prevalence of Salmonella spp. from swine stages of suckling/nursery, grow/finisher and sow stage were 25.7%, 19.2% and 18.4%, respectively. Ten serotypes of Salmonella spp. were identified with a predominance of S. Typhimurium, S. Derby and S. Agona. Twenty-five isolates (18%) were found to be untypable. One hundred and two Salmonella isolates (73.4%) resistant to more than 1 antibiotic were characterized by 24 diverse resistance patterns, and their frequency of antibiotic resistance was highest in grow/finisher stage (83.3%). Resistance to tetracycline (TE; 67.6%), sulfamethoxazole (SU; 46.8%) and streptomycin (ST; 28%) was most common and the most common resistance patterns were TE SU (31.4%), TE (21.6%) and TE SU ST (20.6%) in order.
Salmonella spp. are the important pathogens both economically and clinically in animals as well as human. Some of them have highly zoonotic potentials even though they are asymptomatic in animals. Therefore, the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in animals is highly concerned for human health. The present study was carried out to investigate the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance and PFGE patterns of Salmonella spp. isolated from chickens at slaughterhouse in Incheon area. The overall isolation rate of Salmonella spp. from cloaca and cecum specimens was 7.3 % (37/510). Thirty seven isolates of Salmonella spp. were identified to 5 serotypes; S. Enteritidis, S. Newport, S. Typhimurium, S. Gallinarum, and S. Derby with prevalence of 46.0%, 40.5%, 8.1%, 2.7%, and 2.7%, respectively. Resistance to nalidixic acid was found in 97.3% of Salmonella spp. isolated, followed by streptomycin (16.2%), tetracycline (16.2%), ampicillin (5.4%). Only 6 isolates (16.2%) showed resistance to more than two antimicrobials. In PFGE analysis of chicken and human isolates with Xba I, S. Enteritidis isolates from chicken showed very high similarity over 82.8% and also the similarity was very high in the comparison with human isolates. However, the higher similarity (100%) was observed among chicken isolates of S. Typhimurium. These results suggest the close genetic relatedness of Salmonella spp. isolated from chickens with human.
Currently, various diseases reside in Korean swine farms and affect production performance of the farms greatly. These damages from disease are further aggravated by the concurrent infection of other disease. In this study, y investigating the distribution of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), Salmonella spp. in farms, correlation between the damage and the prevalence of disease was analyzed. Ten selected Korean swine farms that uses PCV2 vaccine were tested for presence of antibody and antigen of PRRSV, PCV2, Salmonella spp. per ages of pigs, 4weeks, 7weeks, 11weeks and 17weeks, respectively. The results were analyzed by dividing the farms in to groups with MSY above 19, and that with MSY below 19. Then calculating the distribution of disease each ages of pigs. Farms with MSY below 19 showed high prevalence of disease by PRRSV, PCV2 and Salmonella spp.. In this group, the detection rate of PCV2 and Salmonella spp. was increased by the activation/viremia of PRRSV in the young ages of pigs. The results are proved that the correlation between disease prevalence and production performance in Korean swine farms were very significant. The prevalence of PRRSV is more important index which influence to the productivity in current prevalence of diseases.
This study's objective was to determine the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in pigs and their farm environments in Korea, and to investigate the relationship between the strains based on their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics. A total of 36 Salmonella spp. were isolated in this study: 18 isolates from 492 pigs (3.7%) and 18 isolates from 418 (4.3%) farmhouse environmental samples from 16 different pig farms. Of the Salmonella strains isolated from the numerous environmental samples, the highest prevalence was observed in slurry or manure, followed by partitions, farmer's hands, floors, water/nipples, ventilation sources, and feed, respectively. All the Salmonella isolates originating from different farms were genetically distinct. In three farms, however, identical phage types and pulse-field gel electrophoresis patterns were observed among Salmonella isolates from pig feces and environmental samples. This study suggests that environments contaminated with Salmonella could pose an infection risk to pigs on pig farms.

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia (E.) coli isolated from ducks in Korea. A total of 400 cecal content samples were collected from 40 duck farms in Korea. Isolated Salmonella spp. and E. coli strains were 83 and 364 of the 400 cecal samples, respectively. The most prevalent serotype among the 83 Salmonella isolates was Salmonella Typhimurium (51 isolates: 61.45%). Resistance to the tested antimicrobial agents by Salmonella isolates was low except for erythromycin, while the resistance of the E. coli isolates to the other tested antimicrobial agents was high and 90.9% (331/364) of E. coli isolates showed multi-antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial resistance in duck zoonotic pathogens should be of concern to the Korean duck industry, as these pathogens exhibit a high rate of antimicrobial resistance and pose a potential hazard to public health.
This study was performed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of Salmonella spp., coliforms, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio spp. isolated from broiler carcasses, aquacultured flounders, hamburgers, and lettuce, which are foods consumed in large quantities in Korea. Salmonella spp. and L. monocytogenes were isolated only from broiler carcasses and Salmonella spp. had a high multidrug resistance rate of 61.1%. Meanwhile, coliforms and S. aureus were isolated from all four foods tested in this experiment. The multidrug resistance rate of coliforms from broiler carcasses was 50%, and that of Vibrio spp. from flounders was 71.4%. The resistance to tetracycline, streptomycin, ampicillin or carbenicillin was common regardless of the kind of food or isolate.

The global evolution of antibiotic resistance has threatened the efficacy of available treatment options with ravaging impacts observed in developing countries. As a result, investigations into the prevalence of antibiotic resistance and the role of plasmids are crucial. In this study, we investigated the presence and distribution of blaTEM and gyrA genes, plasmid profiles, and the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Salmonella strains isolated from raw meat and stool sources across Niger State, Nigeria. Ninety-eight samples, comprising 72 raw meat and 26 stool samples, were screened for Salmonella spp. The antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella isolates to 10 commonly used antimicrobial agents was determined using the KirbyBauer disc diffusion method. Isolates were further analyzed for plasmids, in addition to PCR amplification of beta-lactamase (blaTEM) and gyrA genes. A total of 31 Salmonella spp. were isolated, with 22 from raw meat (70.97%) and 9 from stool (29.03%). Salmonella spp. with multiple resistance patterns to ceftazidime, cefuroxime, ceftriaxone, erythromycin, ampicillin, cloxacillin, and gentamicin were detected. Ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin were found to be the most effective among the antibiotics tested, with 67.7% and 93.5% susceptible isolates, respectively. Nine (29.03%) isolates harbored plasmids with molecular sizes ranging between 6557 bp and 23137 bp. PCR amplification of gyrA was detected in 1 (3.23%) of the 31 isolates while 28 isolates (90.32%) were positive for blaTEM. This study shows the incidence of antibiotic resistance in Salmonella isolates and the possible role of plasmids; it also highlights the prevalence of ampicillin resistance in this local population.
An investigation was carried out to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolated from chicks and ducks. A total of 2,522 samples collected from 281 farms were examined from 2013 to 2014. The overall prevalence of Salmonella spp. was 21.7% (61/281) of farms and 83 isolates (3.3%) were isolated from 2,522 samples. Nine serotypes of Salmonella spp. were identified such as S. Typhimurium (19/83), S. Enteritidis (12/83), S. London (11/83), S. Senftenberg (8/83), S. Infantis (4/83), S. Montevideo (3/83), S. Hadar (3/83), S. Saintpaul (1/83), S. Rissen (1/83) and S. Arizonae (2/83). Nineteen isolates were found to be untypable serotypes. In the results of antimicrobial resistance test, all of isolates were resistant to at least two antimicrobial agent and the high resistance was found to nalidixic acid (66.3%), streptomycin (57.8%). All of isolates were susceptible to amoxacillin/clavulic acid, cefeprime, ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim. This results indicated the serotypes of Salmonella isolates are widely distributed in chicks and ducks. Therefore further epidemiological studies should be carried out in breeder farm and a hatchery.
The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence, biochemical properties and serotypes of Salmonella organisms in the domestic animals in Western Gyeongbuk province during the period from January to December 2000. Salmonella spp were isolated from 51(1.62%) of 3,141 cases of domestic animals. Serotypes of isolates were S enteritidis 17(29.6% of isolates), S agona 11(20.3%), S rissen 8(14.8%), S gallinarum 4(7.4%), S derby 3(5.5%), S typhimurium 2(3.7%), S travis 1(1.8%), S montevideo 1(1.8%) and untypable 4(12.9%), in order. The majority of isolates were highly susceptible to amikacin, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, norfloxacin and gentamicin, whereas all isolates were resistant to bacitracin, erythromycin, tiamulin and tylosin, and the majority of them were highly resistant to penicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline.
A total of 114 Salmonella spp. (17.90%) were isolated from 637 fecal swab samples collected in October 2005 and they were from 25 (78.13%) of 32 farms investigated nation-widely in Korea. Salmonella spp. from age group of 30-, 60-, 90-, 120-day olds were 17.61%, 16.98%, 15.72%, and 21.25%, respectively. Nine serovars of Salmonella spp. were identified. The predominant serovars of isolates were S. Typhimurium (including var Copenhagen), S. Agona, S. Derby, and S. Heidelberg by turns. Almost isolates belonged to serogroup B (69.30%). All isolates were resistant to penicillin G and oxytetracycline, and this was considered due to be used as feed additive through the most of pig farms for decades. And also, frequent resistance observed for ampicillin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and lincomycin-spectinomycin, which are commonly used in veterinary medicine for decades, indicates an urgent need to utilize these antimicrobials more prudently if their benefits are to be preserved.
