  • An overview of 30 feet sailing yacht design is presented, with an emphasis on the factors contributing to start-up popularization. After prescribing the configurations of the purposed yacht, the design of the hull form with a rudder and a keel, are schematically described. Also the determinations of the dimensions of the sail and rig are performed. Finally this paper is associated with the state-of-the-art of calculating sailing yacht performance as this is performed in velocity prediction program (VPP). The VPP results shows a typical shape of a sailing yacht and the designed yacht has the best performance at 120 degree angle of true wind with 20 knots.

  • A model test was carried out, in order to verify the hydrodynamic performances of public 30 feet class sailing yacht. In the initial design stage, the performances and the running attitude of sail yacht including the hull form and sail plan, appendages were estimated by VPP, from which made the representative test conditions. A new experiment system such as captive model device was composed because the running attitude could be changed by wind conditions. The test results show that the minimum resistance is generated in the heeling 20 degree, which was expected in the initial design stage. It is thought to be the useful informations that the keel has au effects on hydrodynamic forces and resistance differences between the upwind and the downwind condition.

  • It is important to understandflow characteristics and performances of sailsfor both sailors and designers who want to have efficient thrust of yacht. In this paper the viscous flows around sail-like rigid wings, which are similar to main and jib sails of a 30 feet sloop, are calculated using a CFD tool. Lift, drag and thrust forces are estimatedfor various conditions of gap distance between the two sails and the center of effort of the sail system is obtained. Wind tunnel experiments are also carried out to measure aerodynamic forces acting on the sail system and to validate the computation. It is found that the combination of two sails produces the lift force larger than the sum of that produced separately by each sail and the gap distance between the two sails is an important factor to determine total lift and thrust.

  • The research developed twin keel yacht for everyone which is able to stand erectly on mud flat without list and intended to commercialize the development product for popularization of west coast's marine leisure industry. Yacht's linear was utilized by "Blue Water21" has superior performance among the existing sailing yachts and twin keel model has been tested by calculation of mono keel's extent and its center of gravity. The result was that only 4 % of difference have been identified between mono keel and twin keel's hydrodynamic resistance which was smaller difference than predicted.

  • Recently, the marine leisure industry has begun to make a mark on the growth engines of the Korean economy. Hence, various government research projects are in progress to catch up with the fundamental yacht technologies of advanced countries. Research on the integrated management technologies of sail yachts is carried out as a part of those projects. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a basic architecture for robust and high-level management systems. In this paper, we suggest a product-oriented Yacht Work Breakdown Structure (YWBS). General WBS has a drawback in that it can only follow the targeted purpose, but YWBS allows for a generic WBS approach. This concept allows us to apply WBS to multi-purpose uses. The YWBS is used as an infrastructure in information management and for data relationships in sail yacht management systems. YWBS is designed and managed by a web application, and the system is implemented with a website as a user interface. This application has not only a design function, but also a data transfer function that is based on the Microsoft Silverlight platform, a kind of Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology. Using this application, YWBS designers can communicate with the management system without added tasks like as uploading and updating.

  • The present investigations were carried out for the most and fundamental elements, what is called maneuverability, stability, safety, rig, sail about the world famous race, VOLVO60 and America's cup. The results obtained are summarized as follows: First, the structure of yacht should be designed with focuse on the preparation for the preparation of collision with other yachts around, with the dumps of iceberg and also whales nearby. At the same time, the accurate calculation on the each structure and equipment of yacht should be processed for the dynamic stability in the rainstorms. Second, VOLVO60, long-distance sailing, should be emphasized on the light weight and the safety, while the boat for America's cup, short-distance sailing, should be stressed on the appropriate weight of the body and the maximum speed for fast maneuverability. Third, up-to-the minute materials should be developed for the appropriate wind power and the turning of directions.

  • During sailing by wind-driven thrust on the sail, a catamaran sailing yacht generates leeway and heeling. For estimating resistance and moment prediction of a real ship by changing of running attitude, a model test of the ship has to be carried out. This study aims at establishing experimental techniques for a catamaran sailing yacht by changed attitude during running direction. Through the model test, drag and side force of the real ship are predicted. Also through experiment, rolling and yawing moments were considered.

  • This study suggests a navigation route for maritime tourism cruise sail yacht that sails off from Yeosu, and passes by Baekdo and Geomundo with their live island culture, to Kimnyeonghang of the Jeju islands. Recently, there are increasing number of accidents in proportion to vitalizing marine leisure. That's why it should be examined by region and sea when developing safe sea route considering characteristics of the sailing yacht. Thus, it is needed to introduce marine culture, hold international sailing yacht race and develop multi-functional sea port according to the case of Geomundo. Also additional analysis for navigation ruote patterns and density of the fairway is required. This information will improve safe sailing level of sailing yacht that will help the local tourism industry.
