The aim of this study was to describe the status and needs of safety education in elementary schools and to develop a model of the comprehensive school safety education in Korea. A literary review was used to assess the status of safety education materials in Korea, the safety education program, and the laws and policies about safety education. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in Seoul, Kyonggi Province, Kwangwon Province, and Jeonbuk Province to assess the status and needs of school safety education. Survey data was obtained in June 2002 from 83 teachers and 21 focus group consisting of experts. The primary goal of safety education is to help students to acquire knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs on safety. Comprehensive safety education has these primary goals: To provide an opportunity for students to develop their values, attitudes and beliefs about safety. This study will help assess the feasibility of applying safety education guidelines in elementary schools in Korea, including theoretical aspects of the field and practical aspects of safety education in relation to guidelines containing the diverse types of safety activities in Korea. In particular, it will suggest appropriate alternatives to current methods, protecting elementary school students in Korea, and how those can be created in the cultural context of Korea.

Recently, there are lacks of construction workers, and such vacancy has been continuously increased in many construction sites. Foreign workers have been hired to fill such vacancy, but increasingly high demands for construction workers made construction companies to hire foreign workers who did not properly pass the health and safety education program. In this work, problems associated with the basic education program for occupational safety and health training, which is the first mandatory requirement for foreign workers, were evaluated to suggest applicable solutions for this program. Literature reviews and preliminary investigations were performed, and a questionnaire survey was conducted for practitioners who were in charge of safety management in various construction sites. Results from survey were analyzed to derive proper methods for improvement on basic education on occupational safety and health training program. It is believed that suggested solution from this work can make foreign workers to be more conscious about health and safety issues, so that it will eventually decrease the accident rate in construction sites.
Instroduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate safety education-related backgrounds and safety behaviors of elementary school children at a local area in Jeonbuk province. Methods: Study subjects were 308 5th and 6th graders from 6 schools located in J City and the data were collected from June 16-27, 2003. Research instrument to test safety behaviors was 4-points summated scale (Cronbach${\alpha}$= .94) composed of 54-items with three sub-categories school life safety (${\alpha}$= .88), traffic safety (${\alpha}$= .86), and daily life safety (${\alpha}$= .84), The data was analyzed by percentage, x2-test, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan test using SPSS/PC 10.0. Results: 1. Safety Education-related Characteristics: Safety education was mostly conducted during extracurricular hour as picnic (37%) and regular class (37.2%); and the instructors of safety education were school nurse (33.2%), classroom teacher (30.9%), and parents (23.4%) in order. About two third (71.0%) of the subjects have had many kinds of school event program such as essay writing, poster drawing, oratorical contest in the course of safety education According to gender, girl students was more favorable about school events as a effective safety education measure (x2=9.188, p= .010); and according to school location, nural school taught more at moming & closing session (x2=7.383, p= .025), by school nurse or classroom teacher (x2=36.574, p= .001), and had more frequent (x2=63.337, p= .001) safety education class. 2. Practice of safety behaviors: Mean scores of safety behaviors was $106.9{\pm}24.92$ out of 162 points. According gender, the scores of girl students (t=-3.296, p= .001) were significant higher than boy students. But there was not any significant difference according to school area According to safety education-related characteristics, the scores of safety behaviors was significantly higher in the group who thought that school event program was more effective on safety education (F=4.024, p= .019), and who were more interested in current safety education class (F= 10.203, p= .001) Conclusions: From the above findings, the authors concluded that school-based safety education was mainly conducted at extra-curricular and regular class, and by school nurse or classroom teacher in elementary school. Even though the mean scores of safety behaviors of elementary school children was in medium level, those. were significant higher in girl students and in rural school children. And extra-curricular activities and school event programs were suggested as more effective strategies for school-based safety education Based on the above findings, safety education class can be recommended in regular curricular basis; and various extracurricular activities and school event programs need to be developed for more effective school-based safety education. In addition, further study on gender-specific factors on safety behaviors and nationwide survey on school-based safety education should be needed.

This study aimed to provide the fundamental resources for developing an effective safety education program. We analyzed the condition of school accidents and safety awareness, and the condition of school safety education and the factors related to safety education. Ultimately, this study can lead the following studies to develop the safety education program realistically, which can effectively change the safety behaviors of Korean students. Methods: We carried out a questionnaire survey that was targeted at the schools - three elementary, three middle, and three high schools - located in Chung-nam, from April 1, 2012 to May 2, 2012. Totally, the questionnaires of 578 students were fully filled out. The design of this study is a descriptive research. Results: 1. 64.5% of elementary school students, 33% of middle school students and 32% of high school students had experienced more than one safety accident. The frequency of occurrence was the highest in playgrounds for elementary and middle school students, and in stairs for high school students. The most safety accidents occurred during lunch time and at recess in elementary and middle school, and at recess in high school. Further, most of the students who had experienced the safety accidents had been treated in infirmary (school nurse's office) for elementary school students, and in a hospital for middle and high school students. 2. There was statistical significance in the safety consciousness for students in elementary school (18.09 points), middle school (17.68 points), and high school (17.26 points), on a twenty-point scale. (F=3.754, p=0.024). 3. Comparing the factors related to school safety education with safety consciousness, students in elementary school that gave an answer of the usefulness of safety education showed a high standard in the safety consciousness level. (F=12.347, p=0.002) For the need of safety education, the students in the elementary school and high school that expressed the necessity of safety education showed a high standard in the safety consciousness level. Conclusions: Accordingly, it is true that there are the differences at safety awareness among elementary middle high school students. This study is meaningful enough in that it provides the fundamental resources for developing the effective safety education methods for the subjects.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of CPR education programs on seafarers and the retention period of the knowledge. The subjects of this study were 40 seafarers who took safety training courses at the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology. The seafarers were tested for their knowledge and attitude before, immediately after, 1 month after, and 3 months after the CPR education program. Data were analyzed for frequency, percentage, ${\chi}^2-test$, and t-test, and ANOVA was measured repeatedly using an SPSS statistical program. Knowledge, attitude, and performance ability were significantly increased post-education as compared to pre-education. Knowledge, attitude and performance ability were consistent when tested after 1 month, but knowledge, attitude, and performance ability were significantly decreased when tested three months later. Therefore, to maintain knowledge, attitude, and skills in performing CPR, appropriate renewal times are necessary in regular seafarers' safety training centers and sailing vessels.

Educational programs for promoting occupational safety and health have widely been established in advanced countries, such as United States and Germany, in the area of disaster prevention Focused attentions and investments for safety and health education have been placed especially for small and medium sized companies. Recently, information technologies have also been applied for the development and management of educational programs in those countries. It is also worth noting that a wide variety of incentive systems has been implemented for managers and workers to voluntarily Participate in safety and health education. Based on the brief survey on incentive systems in advanced countries, this study proposes two different incentive models, such as 'Supervision Exemption Model for Participants in Safety and Health Education' and 'Compensation Program fur Educational Expenses and Losses', which may efficiently be employed in Korea. These incentive models may contribute to revitalizing the occupational safety and health education which has recently been dwindled due to the changes in governmental regulations.
