Exogenous Indole Regulates Lipopeptide Biosynthesis in Antarctic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Pc3

  • Bacillus amyloliquefaciens Pc3 was isolated from Antarctic seawater with antifungal activity. In order to investigate the metabolic regulation mechanism in the biosynthesis of lipopeptides in B. amyloliquefaciens Pc3, GC/MS-based metabolomics was used when exogenous indole was added. The intracellular metabolite profiles showed decreased asparagine, aspartic acid, glutamine, glutamic acid, threonine, valine, isoleucine, hexadecanoic acid, and octadecanoic acid in the indole-treated groups, which were involved in the biosynthesis of lipopeptides. B. amyloliquefaciens Pc3 exhibited a growth promotion, bacterial total protein increase, and lipopeptide biosynthesis inhibition upon the addition of indole. Besides this, real-time PCR analysis further revealed that the transcription of lipopeptide biosynthesis genes ituD, fenA, and srfA-A were downregulated by indole with 22.4-, 21.98-, and 26.0-fold, respectively. It therefore was speculated that as the metabolic flux of most of the amino acids and fatty acids were transferred to the synthesis of proteins and biomass, lipopeptide biosynthesis was weakened owing to the lack of precursor amino acids and fatty acids.

Characteristics of residuals from the 2nd-stage microfiltration in a dual membrane process (침지식 2단 막여과 고도 정수처리 시스템의 최종배출수 특징)

  • Low-pressure membrane processes have been extensively expanded their applications to drinking water production in a few decades. As a capacity of a membrane plant becomes greater in recent years, proper methods to increase water production as well as to treat residuals have drawn great attention. A possible treatment option for the better water production is to apply a dual membrane system. The second stage microfiltration was installed and operated for approximately six months. The residuals from the two stage microfiltration were investigated to learn their characteristics in settling and dewatering processes. The settlability of the membrane residuals were greatest at the SS concentration of approximately 15000mg/L. The proper dose of the polyelectrolytes for filterability were obtained in the range of 0.5~1%. In the dosage range, the water contents of the membrane residuals were greater but the SRF were lower than the residual from the conventional process.

Improvement of dewaterability and settleability of sewage sludge using coagulation sludge (응집슬러지를 이용한 하수슬러지의 탈수성 및 침강성 개선)

  • This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of improving dewaterability and settleability of sewage sludge using coagulation sludge. When mixed with sewage sludge and coagulation sludge at 1:1 ratio, capillary suction time(CST) and specific resistance to filtration(SRF) decreased by about 56% and 68%, respectively. It is found that total solids(TS) and volatile solids(VS) of mixing sludge are increased by about 59% and 53%, respectively. Also, the turbidity of the mixing sludge supernatant was reduced from 99 to 16 NTU. It is observed that the mixing of sewage sludge and coagulation sludge at 1:1 showed better effect than using poly-aluminum chloride(PAC) coagulant at 25 mg/L.

Improved Phase and Harmonic Detection Scheme using Fast Fourier Transform with Minimum Sampling Data under Distorted Grid Voltage (최소 샘플링의 고속푸리에 변환을 이용한 비정상 계통의 향상된 위상추종 및 고조파 검출 기법)

  • In distributed generation systems, a grid-connected inverter should operate with synchronization to grid voltage. Considering that synchronization requires the phase angle of grid voltage, a phase locked loop (PLL) scheme is often used. The synchronous reference frame phase locked loop (SRF-PLL) is generally known to provide reasonable performance under ideal grid voltage. However, this scheme indicates performance degradation under the harmonic distorted or unbalanced grid voltage condition. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a phase and harmonic detection method of grid voltage using fast Fourier transform (FFT). To reduce the calculation time of FFT algorithm, minimum sampling data is taken from the voltage measurement to determine the phase angle and the magnitude of harmonic components. An experimental test setup for a grid-connected inverter system has been constructed. By comparative simulations and experiments under various abnormal grid voltage conditions, the proposed scheme has been proven to effectively track the phase angle of the grid voltage.

Development of High-Quality LTCC Solenoid Inductor using Solder ball and Air Cavity for 3-D SiP

  • In this paper, a high-quality low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) solenoid inductor using a solder ball and an air cavity on a silicon wafer for three-dimensional (3-D) system-in-package (SiP) is proposed. The LTCC multi-layer solenoid inductor is attached using Ag paste and solder ball on a silicon wafer with the air cavity structure. The air cavity is formed on a silicon wafer through an anisotropic wet-etching technology and is able to isolate the LTCC dielectric loss which is equivalent to a low k material effect. The electrical coupling between the metal layer and the LTCC dielectric layer is decreased by adopting the air cavity. The LTCC solenoid inductor using the solder ball and the air cavity on silicon wafer has an improved Q factor and self-resonant frequency (SRF) by reducing the LTCC dielectric resistance and parasitic capacitance. Also, 3-D device stacking technologies provide an effective path to the miniaturization of electronic systems.

  • This research paper investigates available options for implementing clean development mechanism (CDM) project in Sarawak state, Malaysia. To investigate economic feasibility, data was collected using survey and field research methods. Also, economic analysis was estimated using net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR) and payback period (PBP) during the 30 years CDM: afforestation and reforestation periods. The result of economic analysis indicated that, the payback period was estimated at 9 years with 18 percent of internal rate of return (IRR). This study also highlighted that CDM biomass supply project have a lot of challenges due to the reduction and exclusion of bio-Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), supply and demand scenario, and impact of restriction of illegal logging in Malaysia. This study results demonstrate the methodology and guideline for future CDM investment and projects.

  • Meander 형태의 인덕터를 각각 산화마그네슘 (MgO)기판과 산화 알루미늄 ($Al_2O_3$) 기판 위에 구현하여 고주파 특성을 구조 시뮬레이션을 통해 연구하였다. 고주파 시뮬레이션을 통해서 적절한 구조의 meander 형태의 인덕터를 선정하여 시뮬레이션을 수행하였다. 시뮬레이션시 사용된 알루미늄 상부전극은 길이 282 nm, 폭 45 nm, 두께 100 nm, 간격은 15 nm의 구조 였으며, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13턴의 meander 형태 인덕터 소자들을 이용하여 고주파 수동소자 응용을 위한 고주파 구조 시뮬레이션을 50 MHz에서부터 30 GHz까지 수행하였다. 주파수에 따른 인덕턴스와 품질계수를 등가회로를 이용하여 계산하였다. 시뮬레이션으로부터 자기공진주파수 (SRF, self resonance frequency)가 인덕터의 턴 수가 증가함에 따라 저주파 영역으로 이동하는 것을 확인하였고, 고주파 시뮬레이션 결과에서 산란 매개변수 (S-parameter, $S_{21}$)로부터 인덕턴스와 품질계수를 추출해내었다.

Simplified Control Scheme of Unified Power Quality Conditioner based on Three-phase Three-level (NPC) inverter to Mitigate Current Source Harmonics and Compensate All Voltage Disturbances

  • This paper proposes a simplified and efficient control scheme for Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) based on three-level (NPC) inverter capable to mitigate source current harmonics and compensate all voltage disturbances perturbations such us, voltage sags, swells, unbalances and harmonics. The UPQC is designed by the integration of series and shunt active filters (AFs) sharing a common dc bus capacitor. The dc voltage is maintained constant using proportional integral voltage controller. The shunt and series AF are designed using a three-phase three-level (NPC) inverter. The synchronous reference frame (SRF) theory is used to get the reference signals for shunt and the power reactive theory (PQ) for a series APFs. The reference signals for the shunt and series APF are derived from the control algorithm and sensed signals are injected in tow controllers to generate switching signals for series and shunt APFs. The performance of proposed UPQC system is evaluated in terms of power factor correction and mitigation of voltage, current harmonics and all voltage disturbances compensation in three-phase, three-wire power system using MATLAB-Simulink software and SimPowerSystem Toolbox. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed UPQC system can improve the power quality at the common connection point of the non-linear load.

  • This paper explains control methods of single-phase grid connected battery charger. Charging mode is control by Constant Current - Constant Voltage method and discharging mode is controlled by active-reactive power control method. Current control method is based on the synchronous reference frame(SRF) PI controller, and the second harmonic of battery current is compensated by an added L-C resonant circuit. Feasibility of the proposed control methods is verified through experiment with a prototype of 5kW single-phase grid connected battery charger.

  • Vibrations caused by automobile engine are absorbed mostly by a passive-type engine mount. However, user specifications for automobile vibrations require more stringent conditions and higher standard. Hence, active-type engine mount have been developed to cope with such specifications. The active-type engine mount consists of sensor, actuator and controller where a control algorithm is implemented. The performance of the active engine mount depends on the control algorithm if the sensor and actuator satisfies the specification. The control algorithm should be able to suppress persistent vibrations caused by the engine which are related to engine revolution. In this study, three control algorithms are considered for suppressing persistent vibrations, which are the positive position feedback control algorithm, the strain-rate feedback control algorithm, and the modified higher harmonic control algorithm. Experimental results show that all the control algorithms considered in this study are effective in suppressing resonant vibrations but the modified higher harmonic controller is the most effective controller for non-resonant vibrations.
