The number of newly constructed traditional Korean houses, i.e., Hanoks, and light-frame buildings is increasing. However, related research is limited owing to the lack of awareness regarding safety evaluations. Therefore, this study conducted an outdoor exposure test to accurately evaluate wooden constructions. Spruce, pine, and fir (SPF) material was monitored for a year, wherein the SPF material was artificially dried under 18% moisture content, and its physical properties and color differences were measured once a month. Large differences were observed in the material's weight and moisture content, which are indexes sensitive to daily range and rainfall; however, no significant difference was found for other basic properties in the pre and post test results. Herein, $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ values represent color differences; these values exhibited a general decrease after the test. Such differences were attributed to the loss of lignin in the wood. The color difference value was high between the months of May and July, when the daily range and rainfall significantly fluctuated. Multiple regression analysis was performed on the $a^*$ value (redness indicator), daily range, rainfall, and ultraviolet index. The results indicated that the daily range influenced redness the most. According to the estimated regression equation, the daily range and redness are positively correlated. Based on the results, the types and influence of independent variables on color difference are expected to change as the wood's duration of outdoor exposure and the amount of data obtained both increase.

Sunscreen is a product that protects against ultraviolet rays by blocking and scattering ultraviolet rays, and has now become a daily necessity beyond cosmetics. Applying sunscreen is a common and easy way to prevent skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays. Due to its significance, the evaluation of sunscreen has evolved since its regulation by the FDA in 1978, progressing to standardized methods established by ISO. Additionally, to assess the loss of sunscreen due to activities such as water exposure or sweating, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea and ISO have established protocols for evaluating the water-resistant sun protection factor (SPF). However, existing evaluations of water resistance have been mainly confined to test methods involving plain water, and methods accounting for the impact of seawater during activities like beach leisure, sports, and recreation are yet to be established. Based on the existing guidelines for testing the water-resistant UV protection index, this study compared the water-resistant UV protection index in water, artificial seawater (salt water) and natural seawater (sea water) to evaluate the UV protection index in real-world situations such as marine leisure, sports, and leisure activities. Through these results, we were able to compare the differences between water resistance sun protection index tests in ordinary water, artificial seawater, and natural seawater, and suggest a method for water resistance sun protection index tests using natural seawater.

This study is related to the developing method of a transparent sunscreen cosmetic which has waterproofing property and no white turbidity when applied to skin. The transparent sunscreen is prepared by exploiting refractive index difference between oil-phase and water-phase of water-in-oil(W/O) emulsion. The sunscreen according to this study is prepared as a W/O type emulsion so that it is water-stable and water resistance. Also, the stability of W/O type emulsion is developed by adjusting the content of oil phase part and water phase part. As a result of this studying, the transparent W/O emulsion is prepared by adjusting the refractive index of oil-phase and water-phase within 0.004 and it is found that the stability of the transparent sunscreen is increasing when the water phase part is over 75% (w/w) of the W/O emulsion. Through clinical test of transparent sunscreen, the value of sun protection Factor(SPF) and Protection Factor of UVA(PFA) were determined. SPF and PFA values of transparent sunscreen were indicated $30.99{\pm}1.65$ and $3.01{\pm}0.30$.

Bis-ethylhexyloxyphenolmethoxyphenyltrizine (BEMT) is one of the most widely used chemical UVA+UVB double absorbers in sunscreen products. But topical application of BEMT is restricted due to its defects in product. The purpose of this study is to adopt the sunscreen product of solid lipid nano-particles containing BEMT (BEMT-SLN). The particle diameters, the encapsulation efficiencies and the crystallization index (C.I.) are about 330nm, 93.3 % and the 4.3 %. As a result, in vitro penetration and release of BEMT were generally higher in O/W emulsion than the SLN formulation. However in vivo study, it was shown that the rate of release could be decreased by 80 % in the SLN formulation. The sun protection factor (SPF) of the SLN formulation increased by 100 % in the in vitro UV protection test. Therefore, SLN formulation potentiated the UV-blocking power of BEMT. This study suggest that SLN can be used for the encapsulation of BEMT.

This study was attempted to investigate the availability of nipa palm (Nypa fruticans Wurmb.) and finger root (Boesenbergia pandurata) extracts as natural cosmetic ingredients. For this, O/W cosmetic formulations with different compositions were prepared. The appearance of the cosmetic formulations was compared, and brightness and color values were measured using a colorimeter. Also, the pH, viscosity, and texture of the cosmetic formulations with different compositions were measured, and the effects of the extracts on the properties of the cosmetic formulations were examined. Finally, the UV transmittance and sun protection factor (SPF) index were observed, and the results confirmed the availability of finger root extract as a natural ingredient for UV protection.
The variable optical attenuator based on side polished fiber technique was experimentally demonstrated. Various combination mixtures of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and poly(methyl methacrylate) have been used as the overlay waveguide materials for the variable optical attenuator application. A controllable amount of optical power can be extracted via evanescent coupling by changing the temperature of the polymer mixture, thereby changing its refractive index. The VOA under test provides a maximum attenuation of 30 ㏈ and an insertion loss of 0.1 ㏈.

This study is about the UV protection effect and water resistance of a multiple emulsion (W/O/W) sunblock cream applied with emotional engineering and reports an actual industrial case. Multiple emulsion system of sunblock cream has the characteristics of changing to a W/O type that is soft and moist when applied, and has excellent water resistance after absorption. Multiple emulsion cream is a highly functional sunblock cream that has both moisture and water resistance. It is a stable milky white cream with a viscosity of 36,000 cps. The organic sunscreen used for the sunscreen was ethylhexylmethoxycinnamate and bisethylhexyloxyphenolmethoxyphenyltriazine. Hexagonal zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that block both UVB and UVA were used. As a result of measuring the UV protection effect by the in-vitro method, the UV protection effect (SPF) is 78.9 for multiple emulsion cream, 76.7 for W/O cream, and 71.3 for O/W cream. It was found that the blocking effect was different. This obtained the highest effect value in the multiple emulsion. As a clinical (in-vivo) result of the UV protection effect, the SPF value representing the UV protection effect of the sunblock cream developed with a multiple emulsion system was 85.7, and the PA-value that blocks the UVA area was 26.5, and ++++. It was found that it has a corresponding high blocking effect. As a result of the water resistance test, the W/O/W formulation had a high waterproofing resistance of 93.8% even after 4 hours, W/O had 75.4%, and O/W had a low water resistance of 25.3%. In the results of the HUT test, it was found in the order of multiple emulsion sun block cream > hydrophilic cream > lipophilic cream. Based on the research results of this multiple emulsion, it is expected to be highly active as a sunblock cream dedicated to outdoor activities by improving the feeling of use, UV protection index, and water resistance. Therefore, in this study, a multiple emulsion system of sunblock cream is developed and has a characteristic that changes to a W/O type that has a soft and moist feeling when applied, and has excellent water resistance after absorption.

Newcastle disease virus, CBP-1 strain isolated from Korean pheasants was passaged for 173 times by 9-day-old specific pathogenic free (SPF) embryonated eggs at $37^{\circ}C$ (parent strain) and subsequently passaged for 15 (cold attenuation (CA) -15) and 30(cold attenuation (CA) -30) times by 10-day-old of commercial broiler chicks embryonated eggs at $29^{\circ}C$, respectively, The Physical and chemical properties (sensitivity to lipid solvents, low pH and thermostability), pathogenicity (mean death time, intracerebral pathogenic index and intravenous patho-genic index), safety, booster or protective effect and characterization of temperature sensitivity were measured in cold attenuated CA-15 or 30 strain and compared to those of parent CBP-1 strain. NDV, CBP-1 CA-30 strain acquired cold attenuation and decreased infectivity at $41^{\circ}C$ compared to those of parent strain grown at $37^{\circ}C$. It lost hemagglutination activity (HA) and cell infectivity at $56^{\circ}C$ for 30, 60, and 120 Min. CA-30 strain treated with ethyl ether also lost its HA and cell infectivity. Both CA-30 and parent strains exhibited a little resistant to HA at pH 3.0 glycine HCI buffer. Intracerebral pathogenic index (ICPI) and intravenous pathogenic index (IVPI) of parent strain were 1.12 and 1.45, but decreased to 0.75 and 0.00 in CA-30 strain, respectively. The safety was evaluated by mortality in chicks inoculated with 10$^{4.0}$ EID$_{50}$ /0.1 ml. The mortalities of parent, CA-30 and commercial Bl strains were 17.5, 12.0 and 0.0%, respectively. The safety of CA-30 strain was higher than that of parent strain. The booster effects of CA-30 strain and parent strain performed in 4-week-old chicks after being vaccinated with primary commercial Bl strain.
This study was designed to investigate the effects of pyroligneous liquor on lipid metaboilsm in serum of SPF/VAF Cri/Bgi CD rats. Male CD rats were fed basic diet prepared in our Lab., and PL-0 (control), PL-1, PL-25, PL-50, PL-75 groups were prepared with pyroligneous liquor (35% of Choa Co. Ltd.) of 0%, 1%, 25%, 50% and 75% in purified water per day for 8 weeks. Body weights and food intakes almost did not change in these five groups, and triglyceride (TG) levels were significantly decreased (20.5% and 19.5%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. Total and LDL-cholesterol levels were markedly decreased (20.7%, 16.3% and 20.3%, 116.9%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50% groups, but HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly increased about 36.4% and 25.5% in serum of PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. Atherogenic indices were also remarkedly decreased (63.0%, and 50%, respectively) in these PL-25 and PL-50 groups compared with control group. These results suggest that long term administration orally of pyroligneous liquor in 25 to 50% may inhibit chronic degenerative disease through improving of lipid metabolism of lower TG & LDL-cholesterol and higher HDL-cholesterol, and lower AJ.
