Energy efficiency and safe mobility are the two key constituents of the future automobile. The technologies that enable these features are now heavily dependent upon information and communication technology rather than traditional auto-mechanical technology. This paper presents an exploratory project 'Smart&Green Vehicle Project' at Western Michigan University which is to improve the geographical location accuracy of vehicles and to study various applications of making such location data available. Global Positioning System (GPS), Inertial Navigation System (INS), Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) technology, and data fusion among these technologies are investigated. Testing and evaluation is done on systems which will gather vehicular positioning data during GPS signal loss. Vehicles in urban settings do not acquire accurate positioning data from GPS alone; therefore there is a need for exploration into technology that can assist GPS in urban settings. The goal of this project is to improve the accuracy of positioning data during a loss of GPS signal. Controlled experiments are performed to gather data which aided in assessing the feasibility of these technologies for use in vehicular platforms.
Smart Security is the global initiative of Airports Council International in collaboration with airports, airlines and governmental agencies. Its main objective is to create a step change in passenger and cabin baggage screening, escalating security costs and constantly evolving threats. Incheon International Airport should adopt and deploy smart security systems not only to strengthen aviation security but also increase passenger's experiences and operational efficiency by way of seamless security screening that it will lead to establish the best security environment to prevent terrorism and acts of unlawful interference.

Through Korean Smart-Navigation Project we are tasking with a VDES test network construction and service solution development. In this task, we design a structure that interoperates the VDES network with the service host/client simulator which is communication framework for efficient and reliable and seamless service. The proposed structure includes interface design between VDES test equipments which is VDES shore station, mobile station, gate way, service host and client. And detailed design includes message definition, interface design, operation scenario, equipment design and implementation for VDES test network. After implementing these test equipments with proposed design, we will firstly proceed the test equipment integration and interface test indoors for VDES test network. After fully verifing the VDES test network through indoor tests, we will construct the VDES shore station and mobile station and conduct the sea area tests by 2020.
As the recent paradigm of education changes to become learner-centered, there is an increasing interest in project based class as one of new teaching models. Universities are accepting this change and aiming at fostering human resources of next generations, who are able to create creative changes, and studies are being actively conducted to that end. This study suggested a learner-centered teaching model which minimizes intervention of teachers in conducting projects of main text contents in designed subjects. This study suggested support system for the suggested model project-based class, team organization method, various interaction methods of learners, and team work monitoring method of teachers. And the suggestions were designed and realized through project management applications using smart phones which are being used by a rapidly growing number of people recently.

AIS is the most important navigation equipment for the identification of other ships, etc. However, the AIS overload problem has been raised recently due to an increase in AIS equipped vessels. The government is planning to introduce the wireless LTE network at 100 km offshore as part of the SMART-Navigation project. Continuous development and dissemination of the services available through such platforms will be necessary to achieve major goals such as marine accident prevention and environmental protection. In this study, we applied a WAVE communication system, which could be the basis for the development of such services. As a result, reliable data transmission was confirmed for a range of communication of approx. 5 miles, although the service was limited to 1 km in road traffic. Therefore, it is expected that WAVE communication technology will be used to prevent marine accidents through such efforts as collision avoidance and the transfer of marine safety information between ships.
Objectives: This paper describes an experience of implementing seamless service trials online and offline by adopting Internet of Things (IoT) technology based on near-field communication (NFC) tags and Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) beacons. The services were provided for both patients and health professionals. Methods: The pilot services were implemented to enhance healthcare service quality, improve patient safety, and provide an effective business process to health professionals in a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea. The services to enhance healthcare service quality include healing tours, cancer information/education, psychological assessments, indoor navigation, and exercise volume checking. The services to improve patient safety are monitoring of high-risk inpatients and delivery of real-time health information in emergency situations. In addition, the services to provide an effective business process to health professionals include surveys and web services for patient management. Results: Considering the sustainability of the pilot services, we decided to pause navigation and patient monitoring services until the interference problem could be completely resolved because beacon signal interference significantly influences the quality of services. On the other hand, we had to continue to provide new wearable beacons to high-risk patients because of hygiene issues, so the cost increased over time and was much higher than expected. Conclusions: To make the smart connected hospital services sustainable, technical feasibility (e.g., beacon signal interference), economic feasibility (e.g., continuous provision of new necklace beacons), and organizational commitment and support (e.g., renewal of new alternative medical devices and infrastructure) are required.

A new concept of ocean transport system, called mobile harbor, was introduced as a feasibility study in Korea in 2009. Target of the mobile harbor is a smart distance transport of containers with or without cargo handling cranes. Although the mobile harbor project has a lot of topics to deal with, this paper is to focus on only ship-to-ship stabilized mooring, which plays a key role in cargo handling. The ship-to-ship stabilized mooring system was developed and installed on beard a barge of LOA 32m and breadth 12m. The dockside tests as sea test were carried out so as to ascertain ascertained whether the systems can work well to control the barge's motion. The results of dockside test showed that the heave motion of the barge's motion can be reduced by more than 45%.

In this paper, we developed a prototype model accident management SMART-Navigation project. In order to develop a prototype model, we analyzed the status of maritime data exchange standard and procedure. We developed accident management prototype application schema, feature catalog and portrayal catalog in accordance with S-100 standard data model development procedure by collecting requirements related services and referring to related standards. In order to verify accident management prototype model, we test data set based on Gwang-yang Port. The prototype model and test data verified verification software, and it was confirmed that the designated symbol was displayed at the correct position through the S-100 simple viewer.
We propose a virtual sailor training platform which supports emergency drills for ship's fire in virtual environment. Proposed platform not only enhances training efficiency by providing immersiveness, but also enables a consolidated virtual training due to the network-based multiplayer capabilities. Based on the offline fire simulation results using FDS and CFAST the platform visualizes a realistic fire spread in real-time. The training platform on the basis of the fire training material of the maritime safety education institute induces equipment proficiency and environment adaptation throughout immersive virtual environment in addition to procedure proficiency as well. In the implementation we showed that the equipment and environment controls and telepresence improve the training proficiency and enable collaborative virtual training that participates multiple trainees and induces cooperation for a common goal. Implementation of the platform demonstrated the skill mastery capability of the drill such as efficient fire apparatus controls and passenger controls.
The precise prediction of ships propulsion performance is very important to find out the ships optimum route. This paper describes the development of computer program to generate the database of propulsion performance for the ships optimum routing system. The propulsion performance of ship in the sea is caused by not only ships conditions such as drift and hull roughness, but also various sea conditions such as wave and wind. These prediction methods of added resistance are based on the ships speed trial analysis methods of the ISO 15016:2002 standard, and a few prediction methods of the wind and hull roughness are supplemented. These prediction methods have been applied to the comprehensive computer program. And the database calculation for the research ice breaker the Araon has been carried out, which shall be used for the calculation of optimum route. Furthermore, this program shall be used for the route optimization in global shipping routes.
