  • The external morphological characters of the Korean Oldenlandia were reviewed, and numerical analysis of 25 quantitative characters carried out to evaluate the delimitation of the taxa. Among the qualitative characters, the leaf shape, inflorescence, pilose of insde corolla, expansion of capsule apex, and seed shape were used to delimit 5 species of Korean Oldenlandia. As the result of principal component analysis of quantitative characters, O. corymbosa, O. hirsuta and O. strigulosa were evidently separated on a two-dimensional plot by PC1 and PC2, and O. brachypoda and O. diffusa slightly overlapped. However, O. brachypoda was distinctly delimited from O. diffusa by the shape of calyx lobe, the lengths of pedicel, filament and stigma. Also each of those two species was in a group of its own by cluster analysis.

  • In this paper, we conducted the taxonomic study of the tribe Epilobieae Endl. and concluded that a total of nine taxa, including one Chamerion (Raf.) Raf. ex Holub and eight Epilobium L., exist in Korea. Although C. angustifolium subsp. angustifolium has been placed traditionally either in Epilobium or Chamaenerion, it can be clearly distinguished from the species of Epilobium by having alternate leaves, slightly zygomorphic flowers, non-clefted petals, and equal length of 8 stamens, supporting the recognition of genus Chamerion. All but one species of Epilobium, E. platystigmatosum, was investigated for the surface of seeds using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The seed sculpture of Korean Epilobium can be classified into three types, i.e., papillose, reticulate, and ridged. E. ciliatum subsp. ciliatum is the only species Epilobium, which has the ridged seed sculpture. E. amurense subsp. cephalostigma can be distinguished from conspecific E. amurense subsp. amurense based on leaf shape, trichome shape and distribution, size and habit. Both E. fastigiatoramosum and E. palustre have entire leaf margins, but they can be distinguished based on leaf shape, stigma, and seed sculpture; the former has elongated elliptic leaves, capitate stigma, ridged seed sculpture, whereas the latter one has elongated lanceolate leaves, club-shaped stigma, and reticulate seed sculpture. Finally, we report the first record of E. platystigmatosum in Korea, and further comparative study including conspecific populations from Japan and China can clarify the occurrence of this taxon in Korea.

  • Korean terminologies on stem structures in plant morphology, written incorrectly in many books, were analysed to propose accurately expressed terminologies. 35 books in areas such as general biology, plant biology, plant morphology, and biological dictionaries and glossaries were selected to analyse the accuracy of the terminologies for seed structures, e.g., shoot and shoot system, rhizome, apical dominance, anticlinal and periclinal divisions, and intercalary and lateral meristems. The definition and etymology of the terminologies were traced in 4 textbooks of plant anatomy and 2 dictionaries of biology and botany written in English. On the basis of the definition, etymology, and principles for terminology formation according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 704:2000), reasonably expressed Korean terminologies were proposed. All of the 8 terminologies examined in this study were included in the glossary of biological terminologies, published by the Korean Association of Biological Sciences in 2005, and designated as an editorial source for science and biology textbooks for middle and high schools by Ministry of Education in 2007. However, the only 1 of the 8 terminologies described in the glossary were consistent with the proposed expression in the present study. These inconsistencies indicated the need for a reassessment of this glossary of biological terminologies. The validity of the proposed Korean terminologies was tested in a questionnaire sent to 17 professors teaching plant morphology or/and taxonomy at universities. A mean of 91.9% of the total respondents agreed with the Korean expressions proposed in this study. The new, proposed terminologies would facilitate mutual understanding between teachers and students of plant biology.

  • Thin copper films were grown by electrodeposition on copper seed layers which were grown by sputtering of an ultra-pure copper target on tantalum nitride-coated silicon wafers and subsequently, cleaned in ECR plasma. The copper films were then subjected to ⅰ) vacuum annealing, ⅱ) rapid thermal annealing (RTA) and ⅲ) rapid thermal nitriding (RTN) at various temperatures over different periods of time. XRD, SEM, AFM and resistivity measurements were done to ascertain the optimum heat treatment condition for obtaining film with minimum resistivity, predominantly (111)-oriented and smoother surface morphology. The as-deposited film has a resistivity of ∼6.3 $\mu$$\Omega$-cm and a relatively small intensity ratio of (111) and (200) peaks. With heat treatment, the resistivity decreases and the (111) peak becomes dominant, along with improved smoothness of the copper film. The optimum condition (with a resistivity of 1.98 $\mu$$\Omega$-cm) is suggested as the rapid thermal nitriding at 400oC for 120 sec.

  • Out of 12 seed samples of Sesamum indicum L. tested, Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi.) Goid was detected in 7 samples for the first time in Korea. Detailed descriptions of the habit character and pycnidial and pycnospore morphology of this fungus were described. Pycnidia of this fungus were not formed on agar media but they were formed on Water Agar Leaf Media under fluorescent light. M. phaseolina caused heavy reduction in seed germination and seedling stand of sesame and produced charcoal rot symptom on potato tubers. It was also detected from over wintered plant debris and diseased seedlings in the field.

  • External and anatomical characters such as stem, leaf, ovary, calyx lobe, ultrastructure of stigma epidermis of leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, seed coat and pollen were examined on Pterygocalyx volubilis and Tripterospermum japonicum of Korean Gentianaceae. Fruit characters(capsule and berry), absent or not of corona and pollen characters(reticulate and striate) has been used by identification characters of two taxa. But study results, external characters(root, leaf, calyx lobe, stigma, anther), internal characters(calyx love, ovary) and ultrastructure characters(epidermis o leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, seed coat) were useful for species identification. Taxonomic relationships among problematic taxa were discussed.

  • Cephalosporium acremonium is a filamentous microorganism producing cephalosporin C. The morphological differentiation of C. acremonium in submerged culture is closely related with the rheological properties of culture broth and production of cephalosporin C. In this study, the rheological and morphological properties of culture broth of C. acremonium were investigated. In the seed broths of shake-flask and fermenter culture, the Herschel-Berkley equation was in excellent agreement with experimental results in the whole range of shear rate. In the seed broths of shake-flask culture, morphological differentiation into arthrospores affected to changes of apparent viscosity. But results in the fermenter culture, morphological factors such as mean hyphal thickness and the number of tips gave more effect on changes of apparent vitacosity than differentiation into arthrospores. Overall, it suggested that the morphological parameters measured by image analysis can be used as a good parameter to indicate the rheological properties of culture broth of C. acremonium M25.

  • Improved power conversion efficiency of hybrid solar cells with ITO/ZnO seed layer/ZnO NRs/ZnS QDs/P3HT/PCBM/Ag structure was obtained by optimizing the growth period of ZnO nanorods (NRs). ZnO NRs were grown using a hydrothermal method on ZnO seed layers, while ZnS quantum dots (QDs) (average thickness about 24 nm) were fabricated on the ZnO NRs by the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. Morphology, crystalline structure and optical absorption of layers were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Visible absorption spectra, respectively. The XRD results implied that ZnS QDs were in the cubic phase (sphalerite). Other experimental results showed that the maximum power conversion efficiency of 4.09% was obtained for a device based on ZnO NR10 under an illumination of one Sun (AM 1.5G, $100mW/cm^2$).

  • This study was carried out to get basic information about the morphological and production characteristics of fennel populations different origin under different ecological conditions in Hungary. The Korean population can be registered as a medium high genotype and showed a more accelerated growth characters than Hungarian taxon and the two populations have a medium homogeneity $(CV\;=\;4{\sim}22%)$. In the second year plant height in Hungarian taxon was significantly higher than that of the Korean population. The shooting dynamic of individual plants might be heterogeneous in both taxa and the Korean population was not only shorter in the height but had also less shoots by 16% than the Hungarian one. The Hungarian taxon exceeded the umbel size and numbers to the Korean one (by 3.62 cm in the average) and the variability in the populations was high $(CV\;=\;29{\sim}49%)$. Seed size was proved to be also a discriminative feature between the examined taxa. With small deviations (CV < 2) the Hungarian population produced seeds longer by 38%. Homogeneity in the populations was dependent more on the vegetation years and on the characteristics measured but less on the origins, respectively.
