Effect of Ozonation Consistency on the Ink Removal Efficiency and Pulp Characteristics (오존 처리농도가 ONP의 탈묵 효율 및 펄프 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of pulp consistency on the deinking properties in the ozone deinking of ONP was investigated in order to develop the environmentally friendly deinking method. The pulp consistency and ozone treatment time were varied for this purpose. Higher pulp consistency during ozone treatment gave better ink removal efficiency than the conventional deinking method. In was also found that the increase of pulp consistency can decrease the ozone treatment time which can meet the deinking quality. WRV of ozone deinked pulp obtained at 10% and 30% of pulp consistencies was lower than those of the conventional deinking method. However, the higher pulp consistency during ozone treatment improved WRV. Highest brightness was obtained at the ozone treatment condition of 30% pulp consistency and 10 minutes. The lower brightness at the other ozone treatment condition should be originated from the excessive decrease of ink particle size and then decrease of true ink removal efficiency. Scott bond was increased with the increase of pulp consistency and treatment time. However, the improvement of breaking length with ozone treatment was no significant.

Biology of Porphyra pulchella sp. nov. from Australia and New Zealand

  • Porphyra pulchella sp. nov. Ackland, West, Scott and Zuccarello was obtained at Mimosa Rock National Park, New South Wales; Westgate Bridge, Victoria, Australia; and Waihau Bay, North Island, New Zealand. It occurs mainly in mangrove habitats and is very small (± 1 mm) in field collections. In laboratory culture at 21 ± 2°C tiny blades (0.5-3.0 mm) reproduced exclusively by archeospores liberated from vegetative cells of the upper sector of the blades. The archeospores displayed amoeboid and gliding motility once discharged. At 14 ± 2°C the blades grew to 25 mm and produced longitudinal spermatangial streaks mixed with ‘phyllosporangial’ streaks. The discharged ‘phyllospores’ showed amoeboid motility and germinated forming asexual blades. A conchocelis phase with typical bangiophycidean pit connections was observed in blade cultures after 8-10 weeks at 14 ± 2°C. Conchocelis filaments produced conchosporangia and these released amoeboid conchospores that developed into archeosporangiate blades. Molecular data indicate that all 3 isolates are genetically identical.

  • 추계학적 강우생성모형 중 포아송 클러스터(Poisson Cluster) 모형은 단일지점에 대하여 시간강우량의 관측연한 문제점을 해결하기 위한 강우모형으로 강우 단계별 계층적 구조를 이해하는데 유용한 모형이다. 특히 강우 특성을 계절, 지역 등과 같이 비교하는 기준에 따라 5~6개의 비교적 적은 매개변수들로 모의 강우시계열을 생성할 수 있다는 점에서 장기간 강우분석에 필요한 관측연한 문제를 보완할 수 있다. 그러나 매개변수 최적해가 수렴되지 않는 사례가 많고, 매개변수들이 강우의 물리적 특성을 반영하는 것에 비해 내포된 불확실성에 관한 연구는 미흡하다. 본 연구에서는 포아송 클러스터 강우생성모형 중 Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse(NSRP) 모형을 Bayesian 모형과 연계한 Bayesian NSRP 모형을 개발하여 매개변수간 물리적 상관성을 고려한 최적화 기법을 개발하였다. Bayesian 모형은 물리적 범위가 다른 매개변수간의 결합확률분포를 산정하여 사후분포(posterior)를 추정하므로 매개변수 최적화와 불확실성 정량화 문제를 동시에 해결할 수 있다. 최종적으로 Bayesian NSRP 모형에 기후변화 시나리오의 통계적 특성을 고려한 시간단위 강우시계열 생성 모의 기법의 활용 가능성을 평가하고자 한다.

A Case Report: Korean Medicine Treatment for Miller-Fisher Syndrome with Ophthalmoplegia (밀러-피셔 증후군의 외안근 마비에 대한 한의학적 치험 1례)

  • The purpose of this case report was to document the efficacy of Korean medicine as a treatment for Ophthalmoplegia of Miller-Fisher Syndrome. A 57-year-old male patient was treated with acupuncture, electropuncture, pharmacopuncture, and cupping treatments for 2 months. Symptom changes were evaluated using the Scott and Kraft score, photographs of eyeball movement, and the Yanagihara score. Korean medicine treatment significantly improved the eye movements, ncreased the Scott and Kraft score from -4 to 0, and improved the Yanagihara score from 20 to 32. Korean medicine treatment could effectively and quickly treat Ophthalmoplegia of Miller-Fisher Syndrome.

  • In 2005, Yuhan Kimberly found interesting points in the existing customers' U&A survey on the kitchen towel. The usage of Korean consumers is usually restricted to getting rid of the oil from the fans and the fried food. This usage limits could be the barrier to the diffusion of kitchen towel. Although consumers were worried about the hygiene situations about the dishcloth, they also percieved that the existing paper kitchen towels were short of something to soothe their inconveniences. As a result, the company made a decision to seek out the solution for the consumers' worries. The relative shortage of the paper kitchen towel compared to that of the unhygienic and inconvenient dishcloth was its lack of water-endurance. The dishcloth could be reliable in the wet environment which is very common in Korean kitchen, whereas the paper kitchen towel was perceived as very weak and unreliable in removing water form the dishes and the sink. To overcome the common sense of the consumers, it is important to shift the consumers' perception of the kitchen towel category. It is needed to expand the usage time from one time to several times in a day. So it is needed to redesign the customers' kitchen life. The company adopted the brand "Scott®" to meet the global brand strategy of the parent company, Kimberley Clark. This brand was also adopted and made a succesful launch of the similar product lines in Latin America. Furthermore, to make an emphasis on the differentiation from the existing paper kitchen towels, the company made the slogan, "Scott® washable kitchen towel." This slogan was designed to expand the familiar product image of convenient paper towels to water-resistance. As a result, consumers show the changes in usage behavior of paper towels and apply them for more various purposes such as cleaning the decks and tables. This change results in the rapid sales increase of "Scott® washable kitchen towel."

  • The complete postembryonic developments of copepodid stages of Paramphiascella vararensis T. Scott(Copepoda: Harpacticoida) are described and illustrated based on specimens cultured in laboratory. The copepodites of P. vararensis feed on powder of one of green macro-algae species Ulva pertusa. Developmental time from copepodid stage to adult (copepodid stage) is about 15 days with culture conditions of 33-34 ppt of salinity, 22-23$^{\circ}$C of temperature and feed on algae powder. Sexual characters of the species are distinct on the copepodid stage. Sexual characters appear in size, antennule, pereiopods of second and bases of the fifth and sixth legs. Males are considerably smaller than females in size. In the antennule, the fourth segment of the male extremely is modified and swollen for female. In the segment number of the endopod of second pereiopod, female has 3 segments while male bears 2 segments. The female has 3 setae while the male bears 2 setae on the inner lobe of basis of fifth leg. In the basis of sixth leg, the female has 2 setae while the male has 3 setae.

  • A stochastic rainfall model, NSRPM (Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model), is able to reflect the cluster characteristics of rainfall events which is unable in the RPM (Rectangular Pulse Model). Therefore NSRPM has advantage in the hydrological applications. The NSRPM consists of five model parameters and the parameters are estimated using optimization techniques such as DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method and genetic algorithm. However the DFP method is very sensitive in initial values and is easily converge to local minimum. Also genetic algorithm has disadvantage of long computation time. Nelder-Mead method has several advantages of short computation time and no need of a proper initial value. In this study, the applicability of parameter estimation methods was evaluated using rainfall data of 59 national rainfall networks from 1973-2011. Overall results demonstrated that accuracy in parameter estimation is in the order of Nelder-Mead method, genetic algorithm, and DFP method.

  • Sharp has developed industry's largest high-definition LC TV, Aquos LC-45GDI. In this paper, we discuss its 10-bit signal processing as one important enabler of its excellent picture quality. Utilizing 10 bits signal processing, in combination with full-spec High-Definition panel and "Intelligent Environment Illumination Sensor", we have succeeded to realize a beautiful gigantic LC TV.

  • The United States Antarctic program (USAP) through its principal Support Contractor Raytheon polar Services Co. (RPSC), has recently finished a 3 years projects, almost 936m length of underground utility tunnels at Amundsen-Scott station. It accommodates the piping that conveys fresh water from current well sites, as well as waste water to repositories in abandoned wells. The under snow tunnels allow year-round access for system operations and maintenance.
