Characteristics of Horizontal Winds in the Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere Region over Korean Peninsula Observed from the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute Meteor Radar

  • We present for the first time the characteristics of upper atmospheric horizontal winds over the Korean Peninsula. Winds and their variability are derived using four-year measurements by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) meteor radar. A general characteristic of zonal and meridional winds is that they exhibit distinct diurnal and seasonal variations. Their changes indicate sometimes similar or sometimes different periodicities. Both winds are characterized by either semi-diurnal tides (12 hour period) and/or diurnal tides (24 hour period) from 80-100 km. In terms of annual change, the annual variation is the strongest component in both winds, but semi-annual and ter-annual variations are only detected in zonal winds.

Rapid detection of deformed wing virus in honeybee using ultra-rapid qPCR and a DNA-chip

  • Fast and accurate detection of viral RNA pathogens is important in apiculture. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based detection method has been developed, which is simple, specific, and sensitive. In this study, we rapidly (in 1 min) synthesized cDNA from the RNA of deformed wing virus (DWV)-infected bees (Apis mellifera), and then, within 10 min, amplified the target cDNA by ultra-rapid qPCR. The PCR products were hybridized to a DNA-chip for confirmation of target gene specificity. The results of this study suggest that our method might be a useful tool for detecting DWV, as well as for the diagnosis of RNA virus-mediated diseases on-site.

Exploring Korean Children's Imaginary Science Drawings: A Case of Science-art Integration

  • Well-integrated science instruction with art often motivates students to more engage in science learning and to freely express their thoughts and feelings on what they have learned in science classes. This study, therefore, attempted to explore Korean children's imaginary science drawings. Ninety elementary students ($3^{rd}-6^{th}$ graders) in Seoul, South Korea, participated in this study. The guiding research questions were 1) what overall characteristics of students' imaginary science drawings are and how these characteristics represent children's image of science, and 2) what educational value of children's imaginary science drawing activity as a case of science-art integration is. Data sources included a set of children's drawings and individual interviews with selected students. From the drawings, it was found that most of the subjects that children drew tended to be limited to the space. In addition, the children tended to assimilate science into technology that makes our life more convenient. We also found imaginary science drawing can be a good science-art integrated instruction method. Imaginary science drawing has educational benefits; one is a tool to investigate children's thoughts and knowledge of science while the other is method that motivate children to learn science effectively.

설명 단계를 강조한 POE 과학수업이 초등학생들에게 미치는 효과 (The Effects of POE Science Class Emphasizing Explanation Phase on Elementary School Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to see the influences of POE science class that emphasizes explanation on science research ability, motivation of science class as well as scientific attitude of elementary students. The results drawn from this analysis were as below. Firstly, positive relationship was found between science research ability and POE science class was shown among research group. This shows that science research ability was improved as POE science class encouraged the research activities of students. It indicates that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving science research ability of students. Secondly, positive relationship was found between motivation of science class and POE science class among research group and this means that POE science class that emphasizes explanation stimulates intellectual curiosity of students and improves their attitude by actively promoting research activities. Thirdly, there was a positive relationship between scientific attitude and POE science class among research group. This presents that POE science class emphasizing explanation is effective in improving students' attitude toward science by promoting research activities. Above results show that POE science class emphasizing explanation is highly effective for elementary students. It is considered that scientific writing, discussion and debate classes have positive influences on research ability, motivation of science class and scientific attitude of elementary students. Thus, it is needed to apply POE science class to current science class as it can promote wider scientific activities among students.

귀국학생 지도를 위한 미국과 한국의 초등 과학과 교과서 내용 분석 (Content Analysis of the Elementary Science Textbooks Between USA and Korea for leaching the Returnee Students)

  • The purpose of the study is to compare and analyze the elementary science textbooks' contents between the United States(Science Horizons) and Korea for teaching the Returnee students. The analyzed contents are the name of chapters, the number of chapters, the page amounts of chapters, the structure of chapters and the studying time of chapters. The results of this study are : 1. Korean science textbook's number is 20. 'Science Horizons' has 6. Korean science textbook's total number of chapter is 58, 'Science Horizons' is 75. Korean science textbook's total number of page is 1,60.3, 'Science Horizons' is 2,106. So 'Science Horizons' has more number of chapter and page than Korean textbooks. 2. The ratio of Korean science textbook's contents is as follows: physical area, 22.4%; chemistry area, 12 1%: biology area, 39.6%; earth science area, 25.9%. But the ratio of 'Science Horizons' science textbook's contents is as follows: physical area,21.3%; chemistry area,4.0%; biology area, 46.7%; earth science area. 28.0%. 3. In case of 'Predicting the Weather' chapter, Korean science textbook has 3 lessons, 17 themes and 11 activities, whereas' Science Horizons' has 5 lessons, 10 themes and 5 activities. 4. The themes or chapters of 'Science Horizons' to propose deeper than Korea are about animals and plants, energy and movement, weather and season. our body, and earth and outer space. In case of Korean textbook are about chemistry area, the rock and volcanic activity and electric circuit. There are some differences between Korean and the United States' elementary science curriculum and textbook's contents. And the returnee students has many troubles to adapt korean science curriculum, textbooks and educational environment,;. Therefore, teachers should know and understand that, and help them.

Coherent X-ray Diffraction Imaging with Single-pulse Table-top Soft X-ray Laser

  • We demonstrate coherent x-ray diffraction imaging using table-top x-ray laser at a wavelength of 13.9nm driven by 10-Hz ti:Sapphire laser system at the Advanced Photonics Research Institute in Korea. Since the flux of x-ray photons reaches as high as $10^9$ photons/pulse in a $20{\times}20{\mu}m^2$ field of view, we measured a ingle-pulse diffraction pattern of a micrometer-scale object with high dynamic range of diffraction intensities and successfully reconstructed to the image using phase retrieval algorithm with an oversampling ratio of 1:6. the imaging resolution is $^{\sim}150$ nm, while that is much improved by stacking the many diffraction patterns. This demonstration can be extended to the biological sample with the diffraction limited resolution.

Identification of New Isolates of Phytophthora sojae and Selection of Resistant Soybean Genotypes

  • Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRR), caused by Phytophthora sojae, can occur at any growth stage under poorly drained and humid conditions. The expansion of soybean cultivation in South Korean paddy fields has increased the frequency of PRR outbreaks. This study aimed to identify four P. sojae isolates newly collected from domestic fields and evaluate race-specific resistance using the hypocotyl inoculation technique. The four isolates exhibited various pathotypes, with GJ3053 exhibiting the highest virulence complexity. Two isolates, GJ3053 and AD3617, were screened from 205 soybeans, and 182 and 190 genotypes (88.8 and 92.7%, respectively) were susceptible to each isolate. Among these accessions, five genotypes resistant to both isolates were selected. These promising genotypes are candidates for the development of resistant soybean cultivars that can effectively control PRR through gene stacking.

고등학교 융합형 과학의 학습내용과 사범대학 예비과학교사 교육내용과의 연관성 분석을 통한 예비과학교사교육에 대한 시사점 고찰 (Educational Implications of Pre-Service Science Teachers' Education by Analysis of Connection between Learning Contents Presented in the High School 'Science' and in the Pre-Service Science Textbooks of College of Education)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 고등학교 과학 교과에서 추출한 학습 내용과 사범대학 예비과학교사 교재에서 추출한 교육내용을 비교하여 그 연관성을 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 소위 융합형 과학으로 불리는 고등학교 과학 교과서 7종과 물리, 화학, 생물, 지구과학 등 4개 과학 분야에서 사용하고 있는 11종 사범대학 예비과학교사 교재를 분석하였다. 고등학교 과학의 교육 내용과 예비과학교사 교재의 교육내용을 비교 분석한 결과, 관련성이 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 특히 '에너지와 환경' 단원은 가장 많은 예비과학교사 교육내용이 포함된 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 전체 고등학교 과학 교과 내용의 86.6% 정도가 사범대학 4개 분야의 교재에 소개되고 있을 뿐 나머지는 예비교사들이 스스로 공부해야 하는 부담을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 심지어 일부 학습내용들은 그 내용 수준이 사범대학 예비과학교사 교육내용보다 높은 것을 확인 할 수 있었다. 게다가 또 다른 일부 학습내용들은 공학과 기술 영역에 포함되어, 이를 대비하기 위한 별도의 교사교육이 필요하다. 위와 같은 내용을 종합했을 때, 고등학교 과학 교과의 교육내용을 적정화 할 필요가 있다. 또한 본 교과를 가르칠 교사와 예비교사들을 위해 다양한 교육 프로그램을 개발할 필요가 있으며, 예비과학교사들이 과학을 지도할 수 있도록 도울 수 있는 사범대학 교육과정이 개편이 필요하다.

토의·토론을 활용한 과학 실험 수업이 과학학습동기, 과학탐구능력 및 과학 학업성취도에 미치는 효과 (The Effects of Utilizing Discussions and Debates in Science Laboratory Classes on Science Learning Motivation, Science Process Skills, and Science Academic Achievement)

  • The purpose of the study was to explore the effect of using discussions and debates in science laboratory classes on science learning motivation, science process skills, and science academic achievement. Participants in this study were 6th grade students at an elementary school. Students in the experimental group participated in science laboratory classes using discussions and debates while students in the comparative group participated in common laboratory classes with a teacher-directed approach. The results of this study are as follows: by using discussions and debates in science laboratory classes, there were statistically positive effects on the students' science learning motivation and science process skills. However, there was no statistically significant difference in science academic achievement by using discussions and debates. Even so, in the narrative survey of the students'reactions after the class, students in the experimental group responded that it was much easier to understand the meaning of the scientific concepts when they used discussions and debates. Therefore, there is a need to investigate how to use discussions and debates effectively by introducing them at different time or in different ways, rather than considering that discussions and debates have no effect on science achievement. These findings provide science teachers and researchers pedagogical implications about utilizing discussions and debates in science classes.

Identification of a Bromodomain-containing Protein 2 (BRD2) Gene Polymorphic Variant and Its Effects on Pork Quality Traits in Berkshire Pigs

  • Bromodomain-containing protein 2 (BRD2) is a nuclear serine/threonine kinase involved in transcriptional regulation. We investigated the expression and association of the BRD2 gene as a candidate gene for meat quality traits in Berkshire pigs. BRD2 mRNA was expressed at relatively high levels in muscle tissue. Statistical analysis revealed that the c.1709G>C polymorphism of the BRD2 gene was significantly associated with carcass weight, meat color ($a^*$, redness), protein content, cooking loss, water-holding capacity, carcass temperatures 4, 12 and 24 h postmortem, and the 24 h postmortem pH in 384 Berkshire pigs. Therefore, this polymorphism in the porcine BRD2 gene may be used as a candidate genetic marker to improve meat quality traits in pigs.
