  • Five barley crosses and their progenies (F$_2$, F$_3$, and F$_4$) were evaluated the potentiality of hybrid populations to segregate superior yielders in later generation. Four characters used for evaluation were number of spike, number of grain, spike weight and grain weight per plant. Superiority value (Y) of number of spike was best in SB76588${\times}$SB72648 and average of superior plants in F$_4$, was excellent in this cross. Milyang 6${\times}$Suwon 203 showed high Y value and average of F$_4$ superior plants in the number of grain. Spike weight showed the highest Y value and excellent averages of superior plant in Milyang 6${\times}$Suwon 203. Superiority value of grain weight per plant coincided with average of F$_4$ superior plants in 3 crosses and SB76588${\times}$SB72648 was the best among the crosses.

  • Oxidation reactions of carbon monoxide on $SnO_2$, Sb-doped $SnO_2$, and Pt catalyst were studied. The oxidation reaction was found to be first order with respect to both CO and O$_2$ on $SnO_2$ and Sb-doped $SnO_2$ catalysts, and to be of half order on Pt catalyst. A small addition of Sb to $SnO_2$ (depant composition: 0.05∼0.1 mol %) increased the rate of oxidation. On the contrary, a large addition decreased the rate. From the rate expression of oxidation on Pt catalyst, the inhibition effect of carbon monoxide on the rate of oxidation was deduced. The experimentally obtained activatio energies were 5.7 kcal for the Sb doped $SnO_2$ catalyst (dopant composion: 0.05 mole%), and 6.4 kcal for the Pt catalyst. A possible reaction mechanism was proposed from the experimentally obtained kinetic data.

  • Nitrogen doped Ge-Sb-Te (N-GST) thin films for phase change random access memory (PRAM) applications were investigated by synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy. Nitrogen doping in GST resulted in more favorable N atoms' bonding with Ge atoms rather than with Sb and Te atoms [1,2], which explains the higher phase change transition temperature than that of undoped Ge-Sb-Te thin film. Surprisingly, it was noticed that N atoms also existed in the form of molecular nitrogen, $N_2$, which is detrimental to the stability of the GST performance [3]. N-doped GST experimental features were also supported by ab-initio molecular dynamic calculations [2]. References [1] M.-C. Jung, Y. M. Lee, H.-D. Kim, M. G. Kim, and H. J. Shin, K. H. Kim, S. A. • Crystallization behavior of platinum minerals within Pt-Sb-Bi bearing ore magmas and mineralogical properties of the existing minerals were investigated at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ by synthetic experiment. High purity reagents were used as starting materials and silica tubings as containers. Reaction products were analysed by reflecting microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe microanalysis, and micro-hardness test. Stable minerals at 1,00$0^{\circ}C$ are platinum, electron probe microanalysis, and micro-hardness test. Stable minerals at $1,000^{\circ}C$ are platinum, stump-flite (PtSb) and geversite (PtSb2). They are in equilibrium with liquid (ore magma). Platinum contains considerable amount of Sb of 7.5 at.%, whereas Bi only up to 0.9 at.%. Pure stumpflite is hexagonal with space group P63/mmc, and unit cell parameters are a=4.1318(6), c=5.483(1)$\AA$. VHN50=417(2)$\AA$. Geversite has cubic structure with space group Pa3. Cell parameters are a=6.4373(2)$\AA$ and Vicker hardness values VHN50=663.5 (566~766). Both stumpflite and geversite show solid solution and their end-members are Pt48.8Sb40.7-Bi10.5, and Pt33.7-Sb59.8Bi6.5, respectively. Although stumpflite (m.p. $1,043^{\circ}C$) and unnamed PtBi (m.p. 7$65^{\circ}C$) do not form a complete solid solution at $1,000^{\circ}C$, they are known, at $600^{\circ}C$, to form a continuous solid solution. Geversit (m.p. $1,226^{\circ}C$) also forms complete solid solution with insizwaite (m.p. $660^{\circ}C$). Unit cell dimensions of the minerals above increases with the amount of Bi substituting for Sb.

  • $CoSb_3$ with its high electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient and rather low thermal conductivity is quite a promising material for thermoelectric conversion applications. A potentially high figure of merit (ZT) can be achieved by a nanostructure evolution of thermoelectric materials. In this work, $CoSb_3$ nanoparticles were synthesized through a thermal decomposition method in cooperation with a hot injection technique. Nano-sized $CoSb_3$ particles were obtained through the thermal decomposition reaction between the pre-heated cobalt-oleate at $320^{\circ}C$ and the injected antimony oleate with room temperature. The results showed that the particle size was increased with increasing synthesis temperature and the crystallinity of particles was improved with temperature but the decomposition of $CoSb_3$ was observed at $320^{\circ}C$. The $CoSb_3$ particles synthesized at $300^{\circ}C$ showed a high purity and an homogeneous shape with average particle size of 26 nm.

  • According to a domestic provision, test levels of the barrier are divided into seven categories(SB1 to SB7) and the corresponding crash conditions are specified. Meanwhile, standard types of concrete barriers with different dimensions have been constructed nation wide. Some studies aimed at finding a proper test level of each type of the concrete barrier have been carried out, but the reliable and consistent results have not been fully established yet. The purpose of this study is to find out the test level corresponding to the concrete barrier of type-2 through static test. AASHTO LRFD was referred to for the loading pattern and a magnitude of the load that simulate a vehicle crash assumed. The test results show that the ultimate strength of the type-2 satisfies the load level required for SB5. However, it seems that the type-2 does not comply with SB6, showing some differences in results from previous analytical studies. In order to take advantage of the static test in establishing the test level of the domestic barrier, more detailed provisions should be specified.

  • SB743921 is a potent inhibitor of the spindle protein kinesin and is being investigated in ongoing clinical trials for the treatment of myeloma. However, little is known about the molecular events underlying the induction of cell death in multiple myeloma (MM) by SB743921, alone or in combination treatment. Here, we report that SB743921 induces mitochondria-mediated cell death via inhibition of the $NF-{\kappa}B$ signaling pathway, but does not cause cell cycle arrest in KMS20 MM cells. SB743921-mediated inhibition of the $NF-{\kappa}B$ pathway results in reduced expression of SOD2 and Mcl-1, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. We also found that combination treatment with SB743921 and bortezomib induces death in bortezomib-resistant KMS20 cells. Altogether, these data suggest that treatment with SB743921 alone or in combination with bortezomib offers excellent translational potential and promises to be a novel MM therapy.

  • Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seeds have long been clinically used in Korea to promote bone formation and prevent osteoporosis. In addition, the safflower buds (SB) were found to have more useful functional ingredients than safflower seed. Thus, we investigated the preventive effects of SB diet in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. The rats were divided into five groups; sham operated group, OVX alone group, OVX plus 17β-estradiol (E2 10 μg/kg, i.p.) and OVX plus SB diet feeding group (0.3% or 1%). Feeding of SB diet (0.3% or 3%) to OVX rats markedly increased trabecular formation in femur compared to OVX rats. Feeding of SB diet (0.3% or 3%) to OVX rats also decreased TRAP activity compared to OVX rats. These results suggest that SB diets have bone sparing effects by the decrease of osteoclast activity. We also observed that OVX rats fed with SB diet (0.3% or 3%) exhibited the decrease of calcium and phosphorus in serum compared to OVX-induced rats. Therefore, SB may be beneficial for the patients of osteoporosis, especially in postmenopausal women.

  • $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ systems, bulk and deposited on different supports (five types of $\gamma$-aluminas, $\alpha$-alumina, silica-alumina, silica gel, magnesium oxide), have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of iso-butane. Catalytic performance of VSb oxides has shown to be highly dependent on the support and the nature of the support decreasing in a series: $\gamma$-$Al_2O_3$ > $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ > Si-Al-O > $SiO_2$ $\approx$ MgO $\gg$ unsupported. Variation of the V-Sb-O-loading in the studied range of coverage (0.5-2 theoretical monolayer) only slightly influences the catalysts' activity and selectivity. The best catalytic performance of $\gamma$-alumina-supported $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ systems can be explained by the optimal surface interaction between support and supported components resulting in the formation of well-spread amorphous active $VO_x$-component with vanadium in a high oxidation state.
