  • Purpose: This study was intended to investigate the types and seriousness of the couvade syndrome, pregnancy-related physical and psychological symptoms among expectant fathers whose spouses were pregnant. Method: The subject was consists of 100 expectant fathers at one hospital in Seoul, Korea. The pregnant women had not been diagnosed any medical complication. Data were analyzed by SPSS/PC program. Result: 1) The total mean score was 1.85: the mean score of perceived physical symptoms (1.87) revealed higher than the mean score of psychological symptoms (1.81). 2) With the respect to the general characteristics of subjects, there were statistically significant correlations between subject's level of education and couvade symptoms (r=-.209, p=.037), gestational age and couvade symptoms (r=-.227, p=.023), family total income and couvade symptoms (r=-.198, p=.048), perceived self health status and couvade symptoms (r=-.254, p=.011). 3) With the respect to the general characteristics of subjects, there were statistically significant differences in pregnant woman's age (t=1.363, p=.044),occupation of subject (F=3.594, p= .009), educational level of subject (t=3.506, p=.002), family total income (F=16.822, p= .000), perceived self health status (F=3.151, p=.047). Conclusion: Couvade syndrome is an issue for nurses who perform an important role in the care of pregnant women and their spouses.

  • From the polar fractions of a 70% EtOH extract of the flower buds of Lonicera japonica (Caprifoliaceae), ten constituents were isolated and identified as iridoid glycosides 7-dehydrologanin (7-ketologanin, 2), secologanin dimethyl acetal (3), (E)-aldosecologanin (centauroside, 5), dimethyl secologanoside (6), secoxyloganin (7) and epivogeloside (8). Other identified constituents were 1-O-$\beta$-D-glucopyranosyl-(2S,3S,4R,8E/Z)-2-[(2R)-2-hydroxy(docosanoyl, tricosanoyl, tetracosanoyl, pentacosanoyl)amino]-8-octadecene-1,3,4-triol (1), uracil (4), D-mannitol (9), and sucrose (10). Among them, 1, 2, 4, and 10 were isolated for the first time from this plant.

  • A mixture of sixteen cerebrosides, which comprised four cerebroside molecular species (PL-1 ${\sim}$ PL-4) was separated from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora. The structures of cerebrosides were characterized as $1-O-{\beta}$-D-glucopyranosides of phytosphingosines, which comprised a common long-chain base, (2S,3S,4R,8E/Z)-2-amino-8-octadecene-1,3,4-triol with eight fatty acids or 2-hydroxy fatty acids of varying chain lengths ($C_{16}$, $C_{18}$, $C_{20-26}$) linked to the amino group. Aralia cerebroside and its 8Z isomer (PL-1), $1-O-{\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-(2S,3S, 4R,8E/Z)-2-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxytetracosanoylamino]-8-octadecene-1,3,4-triol (PL-2), $1-O-{\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-(2S,3S,4R, 8E/Z)-2-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxydocosanoylamino]-8-octadecene-1,3,4-triol (PL-3), and $1-O-{\beta}$-D-glucopyranosyl-(2S,3S,4R, 8E/Z)-2-[(2'R)-2'-hydroxytricosanoylamino]-8-octadecene-1,3,4-triol (PL-4) were identified as major components of these cerebroside molecular species. All the major cerebrosides were shown to be a mixture of geometrical isomers (8E and 8Z) of phytosphingosine-type glucocerebrosides possessing 2R-hydroxy fatty acids. In addition, three ${\beta}-sitosterol$ derivatives and adenosine were also separated. The structures of these isolates have been determined on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence.

  • Silane modified perfluoropolyethers (SPFPE) was synthesized as a self-assembled mono-layers (SAMs) thin film for micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS). SPFPE was compared to the Perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) as well as octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (FOTS) with respect to the development of hydrophobicity in the SAMs surface. SPFPE shows less hydrophobicity than those of OTS and FOTS. Thermal annealing of SPFPE SAMs resulted in the enhancement of hydrophobicity as much as those of OTS and FOTS. The SAMs formed from SPFPE were found to be similar as OTS and FOTS SAMs with smooth R$\sub$a/ values of 0.3 nm. However, the flexible chain mobility of SPFPE resulted in 50% reduction as much as the fiction force in OTS.

  • The copolymerization of N-acryloylpyrrolidone and acrylonitrile was performed in N,N'-dimethylformamide at 50$^{\circ}$C and monomer reactivity ratio was obtained by using IR working curve and Fineman and Ross equation. ($r_1$ = 0.43, $r_2$ = 1.56) It is found that resulting copolymer is good polymeric initiator for anionic graft copolymerization of 2-pyrrolidone. Graft copolymers with polybutylamide (nylon-4) grafts onto poly(NAP-Co-AN) backbone were synthesized and the various effects on the graft copolymerization of 2-pyrrolidone were examined. The rate constants ($K_p$) of graft anionic polymerization at 40 and 50$^{\circ}$C were 2.82${\times}$10 and 2.93${\times}$10(l/mole, min), respectively.

  • A number of 7-[(3-methylthio or methylthiomethyl)-3-pyrrolinyl] quinolone-3-carboxylic acids were synthesised by condensation of 7-fluoro substituted quinolone-3-carboxylic acid with 3-methylthio-3-pyrroline or 3-methylthiomethyl-3-pyrroline. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of them were tested against twenty species of Gram-positive or Gram-negative microorganisms. It showed remarkable antibacterial activity, particularly against Gram-positive microoganisms. Among those 1-cyclopropyl-6,8-difluoro-7-[(3-methylthiomethyl) -3-pyrrolinyl]-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid(12a) and 1-cycl opropyl-6-fluoro-8-chlore-7-[(3-methylthiomethyl)-3-pyrrolinly]-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid(12b) showed the most potent in vitro antibacterial activity.

  • The changes of the rheological properties of redbean jam were investigated during storage. The relationship between moisture content (40, 45 and 50%) and agar concentration (1, 0.1 and 0.2%) were studied for 5 days of storage. Water holding capacity was measured by placing redbean jam on Toyo Filter paper(No. 5A) and moisture movement was measured by placing redbean jam in bread. Sensory characteristics were examined in terms of color, flavour, preference, bitterness and taste. The results were as follows. Water holding capacity of redbean jam was increased as the solid content of sugar and agar concentration increased. Moisture movement was decreased as the solid content of sugar and agar concentration increased. Color, flavour, preference and taste were increased for the first day but decreased from the second day. There was significant difference(P<0.01). Bitterness did not show significant difference. 45% of moisture content, 0.1% of agar concentration and the first day showed the highest preference.
