  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant activities of water soluble browning reaction products (WS-BRPs) isolated from korea red ginseng. Antioxidant activities of WS-BRPs were examined with the various systems. All three WS-BRPs (L, S-1 and S-2) were found to have an ability to donate hydrogen to DPPH. Especially, L was more effective than S-1, S-2. and, L as well as S-1 and S-2 was the strongest than BHT, BHA $(5{\times}10^{-4}M),\;{\alpha}-tocopherol\;(1.0{\times}10^{-4})$ and ascorbic acid $(5.7{\times}10^{-3}M)$ previously known as antioxidants. These WS-BRPs (L, S-1 and S-2) also showed a synergistic effect against antioxidative activities of these antioxidants. Moreover S-2 had the strongest activity of these three WS-BRPs to scavenge free radicals such as hydrogen peroxide $(H_2O_2)$.

  • In order to make the reasonable irrigation plan in the unripended tidal reclaimed paddy fields, the estimation of irrigation water requirements by soil textures and water management methods for the normal growth of crops is very important . This study was carried out to determine leaching requirements before cultivating crops. For the purpose of this study, the physical and chemical properties of soil samples used in the desalinization experiments were analyzed, and change of salinity by supplying water and leaching water were investigated in the experimental field with lysimeters. As a result considering the soil textures, desalinization effects of good drainage soils(S1) were better than those of poor drainage soils (S2). In the changes of salinity of the soils with supplying water by water management methods, among the good grainage soils with culvert treatment(S1CW), salinity of S1CW3 with 1, 120mm and S1W4 with 1, 440mm supplying water were 2.6dS/m and 1.1dS/m respectively, and salinity of S1NW4 with 1.680mm among those non-culvert treatment (S1NW) was 3.0dS/m, less than critical salanity value 3.0dS/m. On the other hand, of the poor drainage soils with cultvert treatment , salinity of S2CW3 was ranged 9.4-6.0dS/m with supplied water, and that of non-culverted treatment S2NW as 12.3-8.4dS/m.

  • Previously we showed that CHIP, a co-chaperone of Hsp70 and E3 ubiquitin ligase, can promote the degradation of mutant SOD1 linked to familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (fALS) via a mechanism not involving SOD1 ubiquitylation. Here we present evidence that CHIP functions in the interaction of mutant SOD1 with 26S proteasomes. Bag-1, a coupling factor between molecular chaperones and the proteasomes, formed a complex with SOD1 in an hsp70-dependent manner but had no direct effect on the degradation of mutant SOD1. Instead, Bag-1 stimulated interaction between CHIP and the proteasome-associated protein VCP (p97), which do not associate normally. Over-expressed CHIP interfered with the association between mutant SOD1 and VCP. Conversely, the binding of CHIP to mutant SOD1 was inhibited by VCP, implying that the chaperone complex and proteolytic machinery are competing for the common substrates. Finally we observed that mutant SOD1 strongly associated with the 19S complex of proteasomes and CHIP over-expression specifically reduced the interaction between S6/S6' ATPase subunits and mutant SOD1. These results suggest that CHIP, together with ubiquitin-binding proteins such as Bag-1 and VCP, promotes the degradation of mutant SOD1 by facilitating its translocation from ATPase subunits of 19S complex to the 20S core particle.

  • In this paper we will extend some notions of bounded linear operators to some unbounded linear operators. Let H be a complex separable Hilbert space and let B(H) denote the algebra of bounded linear operators. A closed densely defind linear operator S in H, with domain domS, is called subnormal if there is a Hilbert space K containing H and a normal operator N in K(i.e., $N^{*}$N=N $N^*/)such that domS .subeq. domN and Sf=Nf for f .mem. domS. we will show that the Radjavi and Rosenthal theorem holds for some unbounded subnormal operators; if $S_{1}$ and $S_{2}$ are unbounded subnormal operators on H with dom $S_{1}$= dom $S^{*}$$_{1}$ and dom $S_{2}$=dom $S^{*}$$_{2}$ and A .mem. B(H) is injective, has dense range and $S_{1}$A .coneq. A $S^{*}$$_{2}$, then $S_{1}$ and $S_{2}$ are normal and $S_{1}$.iden. $S^{*}$$_{2}$.2}$.X>.

  • Experiments were conducted to investigate the optimum concentration of nutrient solution for strawberry 'Maehyang' bred domestically for exportation in hydroponics. Nutrient solutions for strawberry, which was made by Yamazaki, were supplied electrical conductivity (EC) 0.6, 0.8, 1.2, and $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ after planting on cocopeat medium during the experiment period. Growth of shoot of strawberries did not show any statistical differences among treatments. Fruit length showed the longest in EC 0.8 and $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, followed by 0.6 and $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the first and third cluster. It showed the shortest in EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the second cluster but there were no significant differences among treatments in the fourth cluster. Fruit diameter did not show significant differences among treatments in the first and second cluster but was the longest in the lowest concentration EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the third cluster. The shortest was in EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the fourth cluster. The heaviest mean fruit weight appeared in EC 0.8 and $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, and the lightest was in EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the first cluster and also lightest in EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ but no significant differences was found among other treatments in the second & third cluster. Also the fruit weight was significantly light in plants grown in EC $1.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ than $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in the fourth cluster. Soluble solids content of fruit was the highest in EC $0.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in all cluster. As a result, we came to the conclusion that the optimum EC for strawberry 'Maehyang' was EC 0.8 - $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during low temperature season. This result will be utilized as an indicator for strawberry hydroponics.

  • The model foods were prepared by simulating mositure, protein and starch, and they were heated for 30 mins, at $80^{\circ}C$ and then cooled at $25^{\circ}C$ in water bath. Their rheological properties were investigated by the use of Brookfield wide-gap rotational viscometer at $30{\sim}60^{\circ}C$, and the rotation speed ranged from 0.6 to 6 rpm and solid content ranged from 8% to 11%, the results obtained were as follows. 1. All the model foods ($P_1S_3$, $P_2S_2$, $P_1S_1$, $P_2S_1$, $P_3S_1$, $P_4S_0$) exhibited pseudoplastic behaviors with yeild stress and were thixotropic foods which showed time - dependent structural decays, but the starch food of 8 ~ 11 % solid content did not show the flow behavior. 2. The correlation between the rheological parameters and the protein content of model foods in various moisture content did not appeared a constant relationship. 3. The change of shear stress against shear rate in high starch foods was larger than that in high protein foods and the structure at initial shear time was decayed with a quatic equation according to the Tiu's Model and structural decay was in parallel with the increase of shear rate. 4. The temperature dependency of the apparent viscosity of $P_1S_2$, and $P_2S_1$ was fully expressed by Arrhenius equation and activation energies of their food were 2.35 and $1.34Kcal/g{\cdot}mol$, respectively.

  • Rhodotorula glutinis was inoculated in the medium containing 0 ($S_0$), 0.01 ($S_1$), 0.1 ($S_2$) and 1.0% ($S_3$) Ganodoma lucidum extract and incubated in a shaking incubator at $30^{\circ}C$ for 8 days and the cell growth, sugarity, lipid content, and fatty acid composition were measured to investigate the effects of G. lucidum extract on the growth and biosynthesis of fatty acids by oleaginous yeast, Rhodotorula glutinis. After the 8 day incubation, the cell growth of $S_1,\;S_2\;and\;S_3$ increased 1.6, 1.7 and 2.1 times, respectively, than that of $S_0$. Sugar consumption of incubating medium was decreased but the crude lipid content in R. glutinis was increased with increase of the amount of G. Lucidum extract. Myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids were identified by GC as the major fatty acids in the crude lipid produced by R. glutinis and the content of unsaturated fatty acids (38.6 mg/g) was greater than that of saturated fatty acids (22.3 mg/g). As the G. lucidum extract concentration increased, fatty acids contents were increased except myristic acid, and the most increase occurred at the addition of 0.1% while they were considerably decreased in the case of the addition of 1.0% G. lucidum extract.
