  • Many urban people are attracted to the recreational opportunities and attractions of rural areas, such as beautiful scenery, lakes, mountains, forests, and resorts. Furthermore, rural development planning increasingly emphasizes the integration of resource extractive industries with non-market-based recreational and amenity values. This article outlines a method to estimate an amenity level of rural areas such as natural amenities index and shows the relation of the natural amenity and population growth. The results revealed that natural amenity classifying each region can be explained with geographical characteristics, temperature-humidity, and sunshine duration time. In analysis with population, natural amenity does not exactly explain that but can be one of the important factor of population change.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to suggest new directions for public health programs in rural and remote areas. Method: For this purpose, a literature review was done including articles, research reports, and master theses and doctoral dissertations. Results: Public health programs in rural remote areas were found to be very insufficient in terms of professional personnel and program diversity. Especially, there is a lack of adequate manpower and infra-structure in the public health sub-centers at the township and sub county level. Although community health practitioners at the village level are providing public health service beyond medical care, their coverage rate is very low. Conclusion: The results suggest a need to strengthen the function of public health sub-centers to provide comprehensive public health service based on the life-cycle approach. For this new change, legal and political support must be developed.

  • A concept of community attachment was applied to investigate the residents' support for tourism development. This study aims to identify the factors influencing conflict management and community attachment on community resident in rural tourism villages. On-site survey with self-administered questionnaires was conducted for 348 residents in the rural tourism communities. Two distinct segments were identified by factor-clustering methods: functional-affective community attachment(80.72%) and anti-community attachment(19.28%). The characteristics of community residents with each type of community attachment were determined using a Bionomial Logistic Regression model. The most important determinants of positive community attachment were the degree of tourism business involvement, sex, and education. Therefore, some government supportive programs are needed to improve community attachment for the people who are under educated and females. In addition, the functional aspects of community attachment should be considered for rural tourism development.
