Effect of drip irrigation on soil salinity control and growth of vegetable crops was studied in the three reclaimed lands of Korea in 2007. Drip irrigation was done one or two times per month for reduction of salt stress by using vinyl hose with tiny holes laid on ridge surface under black plastic film mulch during growing season of cabbage and chinese cabbage. It was observed that drip irrigation was generally effective to soil salinity control, but soil salinity variation of some place was not fully solved to lower down under level of free salt stress. It is also considered that high salinity of runoff water spilled out from cultivation ridge plays another key role for soil salinity management. Consequentially, this soil salinity variation might be one of factors brought low average yield and low commercial ratio of agricultural products. Relation between soil salinity and head growth of cabbage and chinese cabbage was well expressed as logarithmic function. Surface soil EC to reach at 50% of growth reduction to the heaviest head can be estimated was $6.1dS^{\circ}{\S}m^{-1}$ for cabbage and $5.7dS\;m^{-1}$ for chinese cabbage transplanted at optimum season.

A rain water pumping station is a structural countermeasure to inland flooding of domestic water generated in a urban watershed. In this study, the optimal operation water level of the pump with the minimum overflow was determined based on the opinions of the person in charge of the operation of the rain water pump station. A GA (Genetic Algorithm), which is an optimization technique, was used to estimate the optimal operation water level of the rain water pump station and was linked with SWMM (Ver.5.1) DLL, which is a rainfall-runoff model of an urban watershed. Considering the time required to maximize the efficiency of the pump, the optimal operating water level was estimated. As a result, the overall water level decreased at a lower operating water level than the existing water level. For most pumps, the lowest operating water level was selected for the operating range of each pump unit. The operation of the initial pump could reduce the amount of overflow, and there was no change in the overflow reduction, even after changing the operation condition of the pump. Internal water flooding reduction was calculated to be 1%~2%, and the overflow occurring in the downstream area was reduced. The operating point of the pump was judged to be an effective operation from a mechanical and practical point of view. A consideration of the operating conditions of the pump in future, will be helpful for improving the efficiency of the pump and to reducing inland flooding.
This study focused on the selection of appropriate plant species of VFS (vegetative fiter strips) and the assessment of VFS effects for reducing NPS (non-point source) pollution from uplands. The experimental field was constructed with 1 control and 6 treated plots in the upland area of $1,500m^2$ with 5% slope which is located in Gunwi-gun, Gyeongbuk province. Six vegetation including Chufa, Common crabgrass, Barnyard grass, Turf grass, Tall fescue, Kenturky bluegrass, were applied to install VFS systems during the study period from June 2011 to Dec. 2012. The results of this study showed that 6.1~77.8% in runoff and 15.6~90.3% in TS, 49.9~96.6% in T-P, and 6.7~91.1% in T-N were reduced from the VFS treated plots. Generally high reduction effects were observed from TS, T-P, T-N, and SS, while BOD, TOC, and $NO_3^-$ showed low reductions. The best vegetation type was Turf grass showing higher reduction effects of NPS pollutions and having relatively easier maintenance efforts compared to other vegetations selected in this study. Based on these results, VFS technique found to be an effective management practice for reducing agricultural NPS pollutions in Korean upland conditions. Further study needs to be performed through various field experiments with long term monitoring in order to develop a design manual of VFS system for practical applications.
Recent studies have shown that alum addition to litter results in many environmental and economic advantages, such as reductions in metal runoff, lower ammonia emission and improved poultry performance. However, no research has been conducted to evaluate the effects of different types of alum on soluble metals in poultry litter. The objective of this study was conducted to investigate changes in soluble metal from poultry litter with different types of aluminum sulfate (alum) under laboratory condition. The treatments used in this study, which were mixed in the upper 1 cm of litter or sprayed onto the litter surface, were 4 g alum, 8 g alum, 8.66 g liquid alum, 17.3 g liquid alum, 11.2 g A7 (high acid alum), and 22.4 g A7 (high acid alum)/100 g litter. Applying different types of alum to poultry litter reduced (P<0.05) concentrations of soluble Fe (9 to 54%), Cu (9 to 49%) and Zn (11 to 40%), relative to untreated litter, whereas it increased Ca and Mg (P<0.05). Mean soluble Fe and Cu levels in poultry litter from different types of alum decreased in the order: 22.4 g A7 (54% and 49%) > 17.3 g liquid alum (48% and 42%) > 8 g alum (48% and 31%) > 4 g alum (28% and 10%) > 8.6 g liquid alum (10% and 9%) > 11.2 g A7 (8.6% and 9%). Additionally, the high reduction in soluble Zn concentration was 4 g alum (40%), followed by 8 g alum (26%), 22.4 g A7 (25%), 17.3 g liquid alum (23%), 8.66 g liquid alum (18%), and 11.2 g A7 (11%), respectively. In conclusion, the current studies suggest that treating poultry litter with different types of alum can be applied to reduce soluble metal (Fe, Cu, and Zn) and to develop a production to merchandise for poultry litter that would result in reduction in pollutants from these materials. Furthermore, in order to improve environmental management in the poultry industry, the use of alum, liquid alum and high acid alum all should be provided a valid means of reducing negative environmental impact.
Highways are characterized by high non-point pollutant emissions due to high traffic volumes and sections that cause abrupt change in driving speed (i.e. rest stations, ticketing office, etc.). Most highways in Korea were constructed with layers that do not allow adequate infiltration. Moreover, non-point pollution reduction facilities were not commonly installed on domestic highways. This study was conducted to evaluate a facility treating highway runoff and develop a cost-effective design for infiltration facilities by using soil amendment techniques. Performing soil amendment increased the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and infiltration rate in the facility by approximately 30% and 20%, respectively. The facility's efficiency of removing non-point pollutants (Total Suspend Soiled (TSS), Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), Biological Oxygen Demand(BOD), Total Nitrogen (TN) and Total Phosphorus, (TP) were also increased by 20%. Performing soil amendment on areas with low permeability can increase the infiltration rates by improving the storage volume capacity, HRT, and infiltration area. The application of infiltration facilities on areas with low permeability should comply with the guidelines presented in the Ministry of Environment's Standards for installation of non-point pollution reduction facilities. However, soil amendment may be necessary if the soil infiltration rate is less than 13 mm/hr.
Rainfall-runoff modeling in conjunction with rainfall frequency analysis has been widely used for estimating design floods in South Korea. However, uncertainties associated with underlying distribution and sampling error have not been properly addressed. This study applied a Bayesian method to quantify the uncertainties in the rainfall frequency analysis along with Gumbel distribution. For a purpose of comparison, a probability weighted moment (PWM) was employed to estimate confidence interval. The uncertainties associated with design rainfalls were quantitatively assessed using both Bayesian and PWM methods. The results showed that the uncertainty ranges with PWM are larger than those with Bayesian approach. In addition, the Bayesian approach was able to effectively represent asymmetric feature of underlying distribution; whereas the PWM resulted in symmetric confidence interval due to the normal approximation. The use of long period data provided better results leading to the reduction of uncertainty in both methods, and the Bayesian approach showed better performance in terms of the reduction of the uncertainty.
In this study, methodology to determine optimal location of washlands based on economic analysis is presented. Install costs of washlands are calculated by construction cost and land compensatory cost and benefits of washlands are calculated from flood damage reduction and befit from using washland as wetland. Indirect approach for runoff-flood damage relationship is suggested and benefit-cost analysis is used for economic analysis. Economic analysis is added to existing models that used only flood reduction effect to determine optimal location of washlands. Suggested methodology is applied to 13 potential washlands in Anseong River basin to examine its applicability. Applied result of new methodology is compared with that of existing model. As the application results, it is possible to determine the optimal combinations of washlands can provide more economic benefit compared to existing studies. It is determined that considering economic analysis can be better option for decision making problem searching for optimal location of washlands.
Non-point source pollutants and high-concentration livestock wastewater are reported as major factor of water pollution in water system and wet-land. So, LID is suggested as a method to manage of them. wet-lands is presented as effective method for management of NPS from agriculture and livestock farm area based on various NPS reduction mechanism. In this research, the application of wet-lands was evaluated based on monitoring and modeling of agriculture and livestock farm in J city, Jeollabuk-do. As a resutl, EMC during rainfall event was found to be about 27 times higher than dry season based on a BOD. indicating that the management of non-point pollutants is urgent. Modeling-based wet-land reduction efficiency was BOD 57.5%, TN 48.9% and Tp 64.2%. However, removal efficiency of wet-land tends to decrease during the winter and large amounts of rainfall runoff occur, it is necessary to manage of wet-land. Based on the results of this research, wet-land could be proposed as an alternative to stable management of NPS in agriculture and livestock farm area.

The importance of preemptive flood preparation is growing as the importance of preparing for climate change increases due to record heavy rains in the Seoul metropolitan area in August 2022. Although it is responding to flood control through reservoirs and sediment sites, the government is preparing excellent spill reduction measures through a preliminary consultation system for Low Impact Development (LID). In this study, the depth of flooding was simulated when LID technologies were applied to the Sillim 2-drain region in Dorimcheon Stream basin, an urban stream, using XP-SWMM, a two-dimensional model. In addition, the analysis and applicability of the effect of reducing rainfall runoff for the largest rainfall in a day were reviewed, and it was judged to be effective as a method of reducing flooding in urban areas. Although there is a limitation in which the reduction effect is overestimated, it is thought that the LID technologies can be a significant countermeasure as a countermeasure for small-scale flooded areas where some flooding occurs after structural flooding measures are established.

BACKGROUND: Water-born pollution loads by agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution are expected to become intensified due to ongoing precipitation change. Therefore, it is essential to develop a best management practice (BMP) that is suitable to agricultural environments in Korea. This study aimed to develop an environmental-friendly BMP to reduce NPS pollution load by agricultural activities. An eco-friendly way, small drainage pond, was suggested in this study to avoid direct drainage of agricultural runoffs and eventually reduce the amount of pollutants discharged into the surrounding aqua-environment. METHODS AND RESULTS: A small pond ($12m^2$) was constructed at the corner of a rice paddy field ($1,715m^2$) located in Suwon, Korea. Water was allowed to drain only via a small drainage pond. Sampling was repeatedly made at two locations, one from an entrance and the other from an exit of a pond, during the rice cultivation period (May to October, 2012). Generally, sampling was made only when runoff water drained through a pond, such as during and/or after rain (irrigation). The water quality analysis showed that all quality parameters (SS, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N, and T-P) were improved as water passed through the pond. The amount of runoff water was reduced by 96~100%. Suspended solids and COD concentrations was reduced by 79.3% and 45.6%, respectively. In case of T-N and T-P concentrations, the reduction rates were 52.2% and 60.5%, respectively and the amount of T-N and T-P were reduced by 16.3~73.0% and 15.4~70.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION(S): Our data implies that agricultural NPS pollution from rice paddy fields can be effectively managed when an appropriate drainage water management practice is imposed. In this paper, it was suggested that an installation of a small drainage pond can be effective to prevent not only the nutrient loss from rice fields but also pollutant discharge to surrounding water environments.
