  • In Korea, more than 70% of the territory consists of mountains. Therefore, the construction of roads and railways has generally involved with a steep rock slope in which the event of rockfalls are often occurred due to the weathered rock conditions and rainfalls etc. This is dangerous when the rock falls into the road and railway on which vehicles and trains are running. In order to prevent such rockfalls, the rockfall protection fence consisting of post, wire rope, and PVC coating steel net has most used at the bottom of rock slopes. In a general practice, an absorbing rockfall energy, 50kJ is specified by the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. However, questions still remain about whether the rockfall protection fence works effectively or not. In this study, a typical wire rope used in the standard rockfall protection fence was replaced by the high carbon steel wire rod and to validate its capacity of rockfall energy absorbing the field rockfall tests were conducted. The testing results show that a new rockfall protection fence using the high carbon steel wire rods can absorb the rockfall energy more than 50kJ and 20% of construction cost was saved in comparison with the previous rockfall protection fence.

  • Certainly, we are living in a true mobile society. At the end of 2014, approximately 40million 560thousand people are subscribed to smartphone services in Korea, using more than 2000MB of mobile data per a person. The use of smartphone is expected to increase. Moreover, smartphone moves toward becoming a requisite for modern people. Under the circumstances, high-speed communication services such as LTE provide high quality services anywhere and anytime and, furthermore, the development of high performances of the application makes the life patterns of modern people link directly to smartphone. Almost every day, new creative services are being introduced and the demands of on-line streaming services such as high-performance game and YouTube are increasing day after day. However, although smartphones are getting smarter and high quality services are rapidly growing, consumers still complain about the insufficient usage time caused by the capacity of batteries. In order to solve this problem, this thesis suggests EDLC(Electric Double-Layer Capacitor) uses as a supplemental power supply to keep the continuity of work while switching batteries. Through this approach, the running time of smartphone becomes longer as the number of batteries without power off and the purpose of this study is to maximize the convenience of using smartphone by eliminating the initialization of memories and the loss of time of rebooting while batteries are switched.

  • K Nearest Neighbor Join (KNN Join) is a simple yet effective method in machine learning. It is widely used in small dataset of the past time. As the number of data increases, it is infeasible to run this model on an actual application by a single machine due to memory and time restrictions. Nowadays a popular batch process model called MapReduce which can run on a cluster with a large number of computers is widely used for large-scale data processing. Hadoop is a framework to implement MapReduce, but its performance can be further improved by a new framework named Spark. In the present study, we will provide a KNN Join implement based on Spark. With the advantage of its in-memory calculation capability, it will be faster and more effective than Hadoop. In our experiments, we study the influence of different factors on running time and demonstrate robustness and efficiency of our approach.

  • Organic electronics are the domain in which the components and circuits are made of organic materials. This new electronics help to realize electronic and optoelectronic devices on flexible substrates. In recent years, organic materials have replaced conventional semiconductors in many electronic components such as, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) and organic photovoltaic (OPVs). It is well known that organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have many advantages in comparison with inorganic light-emitting diodes LEDs. These advantages include the low price of manufacturing, large area of electroluminescent display, uniform emission and lower the requirement for power. The aim of this paper is to model polymer LEDs and OLEDs made with small molecules for studying the electrical and optical characteristics. The purpose of this modeling process is, to obtain information about the running of OLEDs, as well as, the injection and charge transport mechanisms. The first simulation structure used in this paper is a mono layer device; typically consisting of the poly (2-methoxy-5(2'-ethyl) hexoxy-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV) polymer sandwiched between an anode with a high work function, usually an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate, and a cathode with a relatively low work function, such as Al. Electrons will then be injected from the cathode and recombine with electron holes injected from the anode, emitting light. In the second structure, we replaced MEH-PPV by tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Alq3). This simulation uses, the Poole-Frenkel -like mobility model and the Langevin bimolecular recombination model as the transport and recombination mechanism. These models are enabled in ATLAS- SILVACO. To optimize OLED performance, we propose to change some parameters in this device, such as doping concentration, thickness and electrode materials.

  • Recently, a stone is preferred as a cladding materials because of its outstanding durability and luxurious character. However, because of running out of natural resources and restriction of production, it is expected that difficulty of stable supply, and thus alternative cladding materials for concrete wall is needed. Therefore, in this research, as an alternative cladding materials, exposed-aggregate concrete is studied using saccharin based retarder. For evaluating factors, changing water-to-cement ratio, dosages of saccharin-based retarder, and timing of water jet washing were tested on the surface properties of exposed-aggregate concrete. As a result, the most favorable surface performance was obtained at 0.75 day after the placing in 25% of water-to-cement ratio, and at one day after the placing in 35 and 55% of water-to-cement ratio, 1.5 day after the placing in 65% of water-to-cement ratio with $24m{\ell}/m^2$ of retarder application.

  • As mobiles devices with high-spec camera built in are used widely, the visual quality enhancement of the high-resolution images turns out to be one of the key capabilities of the mobile devices. Due to the limited computational resources of the mobile devices and the size of the high-resolution images, we should choose an image processing algorithm not too complex and use an efficient implementation technology. One of the simple and widely used image quality enhancement algorithms is contrast stretching. Java libraries running on a virtual machine, JNI (Java Native Interface) based native C/C++, and NEONTM SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) are common implementation technologies in the case of Android smartphones. Using these three implementation technologies, we have implemented two image contrast stretching algorithms - linear and equalized, and compared the computation times. The native C/C++ and the NEONTM SIMD outperformed the native C/C++ implementation by 56-78 and 50-76 time faster respectively.

  • In railway systems, the exchange of information between running trains and wayside equipment is a very important role in various applications such as position detection and train control. Track circuits have been used as the medium for information transmission between trains and wayside. However, track circuits must be installed continuously along the track on the ground, resulting in an inevitable increase in installation and maintenance costs. One of the most promising solutions to reduce these costs is to mix continuous information transmission (via wireless communication) and discontinuous information transmission (via transponder). In this study, we designed antennas of railway high-speed transponder readers and tags for wireless power transmission, which can be used to transmit information from ground to high-speed trains with a maximum speed of 400km/h. We also verified system performance through computational simulation and prototyping.

  • An obstacle avoidance method for a mobile robot is proposed in this paper. Our research was focused on the obstacles that can be found indoors since a robot is usually used within a building. It is necessary that the robot maintain the desired direction after successfully avoiding the obstacles to achieve a good autonomous navigation performance for the specified project mission. Sensors such as laser, ultrasound, and PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) can be used to detect and analyze the obstacles. A PSD sensor was used to detect and measure the height and width of the obstacles on the floor. The PSD sensor was carefully calibrated before measuring the obstacles to achieve better accuracy. Data obtained from the repeated experiments were used to plot an error graph which was fitted to a polynomial curve. The polynomial equation was used to navigate the robot. We also obtained a direction-error model of the robot after avoiding the obstacles. The prototypes for the obstacle and direction-error were modeled using a neural network whose inputs are the obstacle height, robot speed, direction of the wheels, and the error in direction. A mobile robot operated by a notebook computer was setup and the proposed algorithm was used to navigate the robot and avoid the obstacles. The results showed that our algorithm performed very well during the experiments.
