This paper presents new pruning and learning methods for the fuzzy rule-based classifier. The structure of the proposed classifier is framed from the fuzzy sets in the premise part of the rule and the Bayesian classifier in the consequent part. For the simplicity of the model structure, the unnecessary features for each fuzzy rule are eliminated through the iterative pruning algorithm. The quality of the feature is measured by the proposed correctness method, which is defined as the ratio of the fuzzy values for a set of the feature values on the decision region to one for all feature values. For the improvement of the classification performance, the parameters of the proposed classifier are finely adjusted by using the gradient descent method so that the misclassified feature vectors are correctly re-categorized. The cost function is determined as the squared-error between the classifier output for the correct class and the sum of the maximum output for the rest and a positive scalar. Then, the learning rules are derived from forming the gradient. Finally, the fuzzy rule-based classifier is tested on two data sets and is found to demonstrate an excellent performance.
In this paper, we introduce and investigate a new category of rule-based fuzzy inference system based on Information Granulation(IG). The proposed rule-based fuzzy modeling implements system structure and parameter identification in the efficient form of “If..., then...” statements, and exploits the theory of system optimization and fuzzy implication rules. The form of the fuzzy rules comes with three types of fuzzy inferences: a simplified one that involves conclusions that are fixed numeric values, a linear one where the conclusion part is viewed as a linear function of inputs, and a regression polynomial one as the extended type of the linear one. By the nature of the rule-based fuzzy systems, these fuzzy models are geared toward capturing relationships between information granules. The form of the information granules themselves becomes an important design features of the fuzzy model. Information granulation with the aid of HCM(Hard C-Means) clustering algorithm hell)s determine the initial parameters of rule-based fuzzy model such as the initial apexes of the membership functions and the initial values of polynomial function being used in the Premise and consequence Part of the fuzzy rules. And then the initial Parameters are tuned (adjusted) effectively with the aid of the improved complex method(ICM) and the standard least square method(LSM). In the sequel, the ICM and LSM lead to fine-tuning of the parameters of premise membership functions and consequent polynomial functions in the rules of fuzzy model. An aggregate objective function with a weighting factor is proposed in order to achieve a balance between performance of the fuzzy model. Numerical examples are included to evaluate the performance of the proposed model. They are also contrasted with the performance of the fuzzy models existing in the literature.
This paper proposes an indirect adaptive fuzzy controller for general SISO nonlinear systems. In indirect adaptive fuzzy control, based on the proved approximation capability of fuzzy systems, they are used to capture the unknown nonlinearities of the plant. Until now, most of the papers in the field of controller design for nonlinear system considers the affine system using fuzzy systems which have fixed grid-rule structure. We proposes a dynamic fuzzy rule insertion scheme where fuzzy rule-base grows as time goes on. With this method, the dynamic order of the controller reduces dramatically and an appropriate number of fuzzy rules are found on-line. No a priori information on bounding constants of uncertainties including reconstruction errors and optimal fuzzy parameters is needed. The control law and the update laws for fuzzy rule structure and estimates of fuzzy parameters and bounding constants are determined so that the Lyapunov stability of the whole closed-loop system is guaranteed.
To compute the expected travel time of storage and retrieval (S/R) machine in automated warehousing systems most of the previous studies assumed that equal number of rack openings are required regardless of the nature of storage assignment rules. It is known that randomized storage assignment rule usually needs less storage to space than needed for full turnover-based assignment rule. The objective of this paper is compute the expected travel time of each assignment rule more equitably by taking into account the storage space required for each rule. First, the rack storage space is determined which satisfies a given service level. Then based on the standard Economic Ordering Quantity model, trade-off analysis is carried out which relates the storage space to the expected travel time of the S/R machine. Finally, example problems are solved to compare the performance of each assignment rule under varying conditions of demand pattern and service level.
In the adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control, from a set of a fuzzy IF-THEN rules adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control whose parameters are adjusted on-line according to some adaptation laws is constructed for the purpose of controlling the plant to track a desired trajectory. Most of the research works in nonlinear controller design using fuzzy systems consider the affine system with fixed grid-rule structure based on system state availability. The fixed grid-rule structure makes the order of the controller big unnecessarily, hence the on-line fuzzy rule structure and fuzzy observer based adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller is proposed to solve system state availability problems. Therefore, adaptive laws of fuzzy parameters for state observer and fuzzy rule structure are established implying whole system stability in the sense of Lyapunov.

We propose a fuzzy rule based method for structure preserving dimensionality reduction. This method selects a small representative sample and applies Sammon's method to project it. The input data points are then augmented by the corresponding projected(output) data points. The augmented data set thus obtained is clustered with the fuzzy c-means(FCM) clustering algorithm. Each cluster is then translated into a fuzzy rule for projection. Our rule based system is computationally very efficient compared to Sammon's method and is quite effective to project new points, i.e., it has good predictability.
Fuzzy logic ignores some information in the reasoning process. Neural networks are powerful tools for the pattern processing, but, not appropriate for the logical reasoning. To model human knowledge, besides pattern processing capability, the logical reasoning capability is equally important. Another new neural network called neural logic network is able to do the logical reasoning. Because the fuzzy inference is a fuzzy logical reasoning, we construct fuzzy inference network based on the neural logic network, extending the existing rule- inference. network. And the traditional propagation rule is modified. For the search strategies to find out the belief value of a conclusion in the fuzzy inference network, we conduct a simulation to evaluate the search costs for searching sequentially and searching by means of search priorities.

Knowledge acquisition is a bottleneck in knowledge-based system implementation. Decision tree induction is a useful machine learning approach for extracting classification knowledge from a set of training examples. Many real-world data contain fuzziness due to observation error, uncertainty, subjective judgement, and so on. To cope with this problem of real-world data, there have been some works on fuzzy classification rule learning. This paper makes a survey for the kinds of fuzzy classification rules. In addition, it presents a fuzzy classification rule learning method based on decision tree induction, and shows some experiment results for the method.

A design method of rule -based fuzzy modeling is presented for the model identification of complex and nonlinear systems. The proposed rule-based fuzzy modeling implements system structure and parameter identification in the efficient form of " IF..., THEN,," statements. using the theories of optimization and linguistic fuzzy implication rules. The improved complex method, which is a powerful auto-tuning algorithm, is used for tuning of parameters of the premise membership functions in consideration of the overall structure of fuzzy rules. The optimized objective function, including the weighting factors, is auto-tuned for better performance of fuzzy model using training data and testing data. According to the adjustment of each weighting factor of training and testing data, we can construct the optimal fuzzy model from the objective function. The least square method is utilized for the identification of optimum consequence parameters. Gas furance and a sewage treatment proce s are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed rule-based fuzzy modeling.
