A Basic Study on the Application of a Variable Preload Device using Rubber Pressure for High Speed Spindle Systems (고속스핀들의 고무압을 이용한 가변예압장치 실용화를 위한 기초연구)

  • One of the most important element technologies for achieving high-precision in machine tool spindle systems is preload technology for the bearing of spindle systems. Fixed position preload, constant pressure preload, conversion preload and variable preload methods have been applied for the spindle systems. In this study, a new variable preload method using centrifugal force and rubber pressure is used for reducing installation costs through simplifying its structure. The main objective of the work is the verification of the operability in a preload device using the rubber pressure by the finite element analysis. It is shown that the variable preload device proposed in this study is applicable to high speed machine tool spindles.

Pounding Mechanism and Mitigation Effect of Pounding between Adjacent Decks during Strong Earthquake (강지진시 인접교량간의 충돌 매커니즘과 충격 저감 효과)

  • An isolated bridge using a laminated rubber bearing provides an elastic support of continuous span and prevents the transmission of excessive seismic force from the substructure of the bridge, which uses a metal bearing, as this permits a relative displacement between the super-and substructure. Hawever, this kind of bridge is caused long periodic, as a result of enlargingtotal thickness of the rubber, since it corresponds to temperature change and increases the horizontal displacement of the superstructure. This paper uses a numerical study to describe the pounding problem between adjacent decks when subjected to a strong earthquake. Furthermore, numerical results are clarified for the buffer rubber used to mitigate the pounding force between adjacent decks.

  • The combined shear and compression behaviors of seismic isolation rubber bearings are analyzed using the hyperelasticity material option of the ABAQUS computer program. The purpose of the analysis is to predict the behavior of laminated rubber bearing before the several tests. Some kinds of strain energy density functions are used as constitutive law for rubber itself having the hyperelasticity. The results are compared with test data peformed in Italy The analysis results show a little different with experimental results depending on the constitutive model and the refinement of finite element. The high order form of strain energy density functions results in good agreements and the mesh refinement above two for one rubber layer is enough to get good results.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a research on the isolate effects and economical efficiencies of seismic isolation design compared with the existing earthquake-resistant design, and presents seismic performance of the base isolation system consisting of sliding-type bearing and lead rubber bearing (LRB) compared with that consisting of the LRB only. From the results of the research, it is verified that seismic isolation is very effective to mitigate the influence of earthquake on structures and it is possible to increase the serviceability due to decrease of the floor acceleration. Also, from the point of view of reduction of story acceleration and base shear, the base isolation system consisting of sliding-type bearing and LRB is more effective than that with LRB only. In respect of economical efficiency, special care should be taken in using this method since costs which have to be paid in proportin to increased performance are high.

  • Rubber bearings may exhibit a significant cold temperature effect and some velocity dependency(strain rate effect). Both of these attributes which affect non-linear behavior must be accounted for when accurately modeling the bearings behavior, therefore, an analytical models is proposed to consider the effects of the cold temperature and strain rate on both rubber and lead. From the results of an experimental investigation where the frozen bearings were tested under lateral cyclic loading with constant axial load, a non-linear system identification with least squares procedure was applied to determine the material properties of rubber and lead. It is demonstrated that the proposed analytical model is able to simulate the reversed cyclic loading behavior of elastometric and lead-rubber bearings.

  • To increase the machine accuracy by improving the stiffness of spindle bearings, preload was applied to the spindle bearings. The methods of fixed position preload, convertible preload, constant pressure preload, and variable preload are used to apply the preload to the spindle bearing. The previous studies performed by the author of this study were variable preload methods using rubber pressure and centrifugal force based on mechanical systems. This study proposed a toggle joint mechanism that could be applied to variable preload method using centrifugal force and rubber pressure to increase the preload. Also, a finite element analysis was conducted to predict the deformation of the rubber and change of the preload. And the analysis results showed that the preload by the device using rubber pressure only was increased by the toggle joint mechanism using rubber pressure.

  • Many highway bridges in Korea need seismic retrofit because only one decade has passed since the seismic design criteria was introduced. In this experimental study, the effectiveness of base isolation bearings was discussed for the seismic retrofit of the highway bridges. Four real scale RC pier specimens were constructed for the test. These RC piers didn't have seismic details. Except for one RC pier for the pilot test, three types of bearings such as Pot bearing, Rubber bearing (RB), Lead-rubber bearing (LRB) were applied to the other RC piers respectively. The RC pier with Pot bearing means current state of the prototype bridge that is not retrofitted seismically. And two RC piers with RB or LRB mean assumed states of the prototype bridge that are retrofitted seismically. To simulate dynamic behavior of these RC piers under earthquake loads, Pseudo-dynamic test method was used.

  • We studied the material properties for reliability improvement in finite element analysis results for a nitrile butadiene rubber hub-bearing seal and for a carbon-filled rubber mount used in a vehicle. It was difficult to measure the material properties of hundreds of types of rubber for the mount design. Thus, we suggested that the engineering stressstrain relations from pure shear test data could be synthesized by using simple tension data and Poisson's ratio. We defined Poisson's ratio by using a function of principal stretches to synthesize the stress-strain relations for a pure shear test. A transformation of the pure shear data was applied to the experimental values to obtain the predicted results when the strain approaches 100%. In the finite element analysis for the contact force of a hub-bearing seal, the strain results that used the transformation of the pure shear data and simple tension data almost corresponded to the experimental values. Ogden constants were used to analyze.

The Estimated Stiffness of Rubber Pads for Railway Bridges (철도교용 고무패드의 강성 추정기법)

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of four kinds of bridge rubber pads and suggested a method of determining the stiffness and the damping ratio of the pads.The stiffness of rubber pads can be estimated by a direct static test and a dynamic test indirectly.This study used both methods to determine the pad's stiffness.The damping ratio of pads can be obtained using the dynamic test and the damping ratio of polyurethane rubber pads was estimated to aproximate that of natural and chloroprene rubber pads.The polyurethane rubber pads are harder than natural and chloroprene rubber pads and thus carry larger load bearing capacity.In addition, they showed higher stiffness with the same shape factor than the others and thus are more available for bridge bearings.Although natural and chloroprene rubber pads are elongated to large deformation in the horizontal direction due to vertical loads, polyurethane rubber pads almost do not generate horizontal deformation due to vertical loads regardless of the thickness and hardness of the pads.Therefore, they do not need reinforced plate to restrict horizontal deformation.
