  • Network services, such as teleconferencing, remote diagnostics and education, and CSCW require multicasting. Multicast routing methods can be divided into two categories. One is the shortest path tree method and the other is the minimal Steiner tree method. The latter has an advantage over the former in that only one Steiner tree is needed for a group. However, finding a minimal Steiner tree is an NP-complete problem and it is necessary to find an efficient heuristic algorithm. In this paper, we present an evolutionary optimization method for finding minimal Steiner trees without sacrificing too much computational efforts. In particular, we describe a tree-based genetic encoding scheme which is in sharp constast with binary string representations usually adopted in convetional genetic algorithms. Experiments have been performed to show that the presented method can find optimal Steiner trees for given vetwork configurations. Comparitivie studies have shown that the evolutionary method finds on average a better solution than other conventional heustric algorithms.

  • The existing ad hoc network protocols suffer the scalability problem due to the inherent characteristics of node mobility. Cluster-based routing protocols divide the member nodes into a set of clusters and perform a hierarchical routing between these clusters. This hierarchical feature help to improve the scalability of ad hoc network routing. However, previous k-hop cluster-based routing protocols face another problems, that is, control overhead of the cluster headers. This paper proposes a novel k-hop cluster-based routing scheme with delegation functions for mobile ad hoc networks. The scheme employs is based on tree topology to manage cluster members in effectively. The cluster headers do not manage the routing table for whole members, while the header keeps the routing table for its neighbor members and the member list for one hop over nodes within k-hop cluster. Then the in-between leveled nodes manage the nested nodes which is structured in the lower level. Therefore, the proposed mechanism can reduce some control overhead of the cluster leaders.

  • Even networks were introduced as a class of fault-tolerant multiprocessor networks and analyzed so many useful properties and algorithms such as simple routing algorithms, maximal fault tolerance, node disjoint path. Introduced routing algorithms and node disjoint path algorithms are proven to be optimal. However, it has not been introduced to constructing scheme for edge-disjoint spanning trees in even networks. The design of edge-disjoint spanning trees is a useful scheme to analyze for measuring the efficiency of fault tolerant of interconnection network and effective broadcasting. Introduced routing algorithm or node disjoint path algorithm are for the purpose of routing or node disjoint path hence they are not applicable to constitute edge disjoint spanning tree. In this paper, we show a construction algorithm of edge-disjoint spanning trees in even network $E_d$.

  • In this paper, we suggest an efficient path searching algorithm that reduces the hop count when each node sends a data in ZigBee networks. As the hop count reduces, the network traffic is also reduces and leads to less energy consumption. This enables the sensor network live longer with limited node power. The proposed path searching algorithm consists of two sub-algorithms. One for upstream process and the other for downstream process. When a node selects its proper routing path, the node not only uses the information of the parent and child node, but it also uses the neighbor nodes for each node. In the simulation, we changed various network environment factors such as network parameters, number of nodes, and number of neighbor nodes and observed their performances. We compare the performance to the previous ZigBee Tree routing algorithm with separate two algorithms, the upstream and the downstream, and then compare the performance when all two algorithms are applied.

  • Since the existing protocols separated mobility management part and routing protocol part in their design and used a flooding, they suffer from the high control overhead, thereby limiting performance. In this paper, we use a tree-based mobility management method and present a simple and efficient routing protocol that exploits the topology information which is built additionally through mobility management. Thus, the mobility management and the routing protocol closely cooperate to optimize control overhead. Furthermore, we use a progressive path discovery method to alleviate traffic congestion around IG and a unicast-based broadcast method to increase the reliability of message delivery and to judge link validity promptly. The proposed protocol reduces control overhead greatly and works in a stable manner even with the large number of nodes and high mobility. This was proven by comparing with the AODV protocol that employs the hybrid mobility management protocol.

  • Ant System(AS) is new meta heuristic for hard combinatorial optimization problem. It is a population based approach that uses exploitation of positive feedback as well as greedy search. It was first proposed for tackling the well known Traveling Salesman Problem. In this paper, AS is applied to the Multicast Routing Problem. Multicast Routing is modeled as the NP-complete Steiner tree problem. This is the shortest path from source node to all destination nodes. We proposed new AS to resolve this problem. The proposed method selects the neighborhood node to consider all costs of the edge and the next node in state transition rule. Also, The edges which are selected elite agents are updated to additional pheromone. Simulation results of our proposed method show fast convergence and give lower total cost than original AS and $AS_{elite}$.

  • In this paper, we propose a Cluster-based Multicast Routing (CMR) suitable for mobile ad-hoc networks. The main features that our proposed method introduces are the following: a) mobility-based clustering and group based hierarchical structure in order to effectively support stability and scalability, b) group based mesh structure and forwarding tree concepts in order to support the robustness of the mesh topologies which provides limited redundancy and the efficiency of tree forwarding simultaneously, and c) combination of proactive and reactive concepts which provide low route acquisition delay and low overhead. The performance evaluation of the proposed protocol is achieved via modeling and simulation. The corresponding results demonstrate the Proposed multicast protocol's efficiency in terms of packet delivery ratio, scalability, control overhead, end-to-end delay, as a function of mobility, multicast group size, and number of senders.

  • Compared to terrestrial RF communications, underwater acoustic communications have several limitations such as limited bandwidth, high level of fading effects, and a large underwater propagation delay. In this paper, in order to tackle those limitations of underwater communications and to make it possible to form a large underwater monitoring systems, we propose a hierarchical underwater network architecture, which consists of underwater sensors, clusterheads, underwater/surface sink nodes, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). In the proposed architecture, for the maximization of packet delivery ratio and the minimization of underwater sensor's energy consumption, a hybrid routing protocol is used. More specifically, cluster members use Tree based routing to transmit sensing data to clusterheads. AUVs on optimal trajectory movements collect the aggregated data from clusterhead and finally forward the data to the sink node. Also, in order to minimize the maximum travel distance of AUVs, an Integer Linear Programming based algorithm is employed. Performance analysis through simulations shows that the proposed architecture can achieve a higher data delivery ratio and lower energy consumption than existing routing schemes such as gradient based routing and geographical forwarding. • In this paper, we assume that sensor nodes organize the multi-hop networks, are fixed, and operate as full function devices(FFD). The wireless sensor network(WSN) only consists of mobile nodes without the assistance from the fixed infrastructure, which increases the flexibility of the network. However, it is difficult to perform routing in the WSN, since sensor nodes freely join in and drop out of the network, and some sensor nodes have very low power. We propose the algorithm combining routing schemes based on the bitmap and cluster methods in this paper. Through computer simulations, we show the validity of the proposed algorithm.

  • Most of the multimedia applications require strict quality of service (QoS) guarantee during the communication between a single source and multiple destinations. This gives rise to the need for an efficient QoS multicast routing strategy. Determination of such QoS-based optimal multicast routes basically leads to a multi-objective optimization problem, which is computationally intractable in polynomial time due to the uncertainty of resources in Internet. This paper describes a network model for researching the routing problem and proposes a new multicast tree selection algorithm based on genetic algorithms to simultaneously optimize multiple QoS parameters. The paper mainly presents a QoS multicast routing algorithm based on genetic algorithm (QMRGA). The QMRGA can also optimize the network resources such as bandwidth and delay, and can converge to the optimal or near-optimal solution within few iterations, even for the networks environment with uncertain parameters. The incremental rate of computational cost can close to polynomial and is less than exponential rate. The performance measures of the QMRGA are evaluated using simulations. The simulation results show that this approach has fast convergence speed and high reliability. It can meet the real-time requirement in multimedia communication networks.
