  • The rotational behaviour of bolted extended end plate beam-to-column connections is evaluated in the context of the component method. The full moment-rotation response is characterized from the force-deformation curve of the individual joint components. The deformability of end plate connections is mostly governed by the bending of the column flange and/or end plate and tension elongation of the bolts. These components form the tension zone of the joint that can be modelled by means of "equivalent T-stubs". A systematic analytical procedure for characterization of the monotonic force-deformation behaviour of individual T-stub connections is proposed. In the framework of the component method, the T-stub is then inserted in the joint spring model to generate the moment-rotation response of the joint. The procedures are validated with the results from an experimental investigation of eight statically loaded extended end plate bolted moment connections carried out at the Delft University of Technology. Because ductility is such an important property in terms of joint performance, particularly in the partial strength joint scenario, special attention is given to this issue.

  • This paper, which is an extension of a previous work by Viola et al. (2002), deals with the dynamic stability of beams under a triangularly distributed sub-tangential forces when the effect of an elastically restrained end is taken into account. The sub-tangential forces can be realised by a combination of axial and tangential follower forces, that are conservative and non-conservative forces, respectively. The studied beams become unstable in the form of either flutter or divergence, depending on the degree of non-conservativeness of the distributed sub-tangential forces and the stiffness of the elastically restrained end. A non-conservative parameter ${\alpha}$ is introduced to provide all possible combinations of these forces. Problems of this kind are usually, at least in the first approximation, reduced to the analysis of beams according to the Bernoulli-Euler theory if shear deformability and rotational inertia are negligible. The equation governing the system may be derived from the extended form of Hamilton's principle. The stability maps will be obtained from the eigenvalue analysis in order to define the divergence and flutter domain. The passage from divergence to flutter is associated with a noticeable lowering of the critical load. A number of particular cases can be immediately recovered.

  • Based on the change of traditional viscoelastic damper structure, a brand-new damper is designed to control simultaneously the translational vibration and the rotational vibration for platforms. Experimental study has been carried out on the mechanical properties of viscoelastic material and on its multi-dimensional seismic response control effect of viscoelastic damper. Three types of viscoelastic dampers with different shapes of viscoelastic material are designed to test the influence of excited frequency, strain amplitude and ambient temperature on the mechanical property parameters such as circular dissipation per unit, equivalent stiffness, loss factor and storage shear modulus. Then, shaking table tests are done on a group of single-storey platform systems containing one symmetric platform and three asymmetric platforms with different eccentric forms. Experimental results show that the simulation precision of the restoring force model is rather good for the shear deformation of viscoelastic damper and is also satisfied for the torsion deformation and combined deformations of viscoelastic damper. The shaking table tests have verified that the new-type viscoelastic damper is capable of mitigating the multi-dimensional seismic response of offshore platform.

  • In this paper, a nonlinear finite element procedure is presented for the dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete shell structures. A computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used. A 4-node flat shell element with drilling rotational stiffness was used for spatial discretization. The layered approach was used to discretize the behavior of concrete and reinforcement in the thickness direction. Material nonlinearity was taken into account by using tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and a model of reinforcing steel. The smeared crack approach was incorporated. The low-cycle fatigue of both concrete and reinforcing bars was also considered to predict a reliable dynamic behavior. The solution to the dynamic response of reinforced concrete shell structures was obtained by numerical integration of the nonlinear equations of motion using Hilber-Hughes-Taylor (HHT) algorithm. The proposed numerical method for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of reinforced concrete shell structures was verified by comparison of its results with reliable experimental and analytical results.

  • To examine the behaviors of traditional wooden structural frame in Korea in direction of beam, an experimental study was performed. The interior frame of Daewoongjeon of Bongjeongsa was selected as a model, which has two short exterior columns and one high inside column. The experimental frame has 1/2 scale and lateral forces are applied at high inside column by using drift control. The vertical gravity loads are applied on the frame. From the results of experiment it was shown that the stiffness and lateral capacity of the frame was increased when vertical loads are applied and the force-drift relationship in positive load direction was not same as in negative load direction. And push-over analysis are performed by using macro model in which the rotational and shear springs which were derived from the another experiments of subassemblies were used. The numerical analysis with macro model showed a good correspondence with the experiment within 2% story drift.

  • In this study, the torque transmitting capability of a flexible disk coupling was investigated. Flexible disc coupling is used to transmit power between two axes, and there exist mis-alignments such as angle of deviation and end play between two shafts. A disk is an important part in the flexible disk coupling because the disk has to transmit power between two mis-aligned shafts. To investigate the effect of mis-alignment on load carrying capacity, finite element analyses were carried out. Analyses were carried out for two types of disk; i.e., circular and square disks. The rotational and bending stiffness of disk plates was predicted to investigate the effect of mis-alignment on stress. As a result, it was shown that the mis-alignment can cause severe decrease in load-carrying capacity. And, the square disk showed better performance than the circular disk.

  • The spindle with a built-in motor can be used to simplify the structure of machine tool system, while the rotor has unbalance mass inevitably. Therefore, it is important to recognize the effect of unbalance mass. This paper presents analysis of dynamic behavior of a high speed spindle with a built-in motor. The spindle is supported by the angular contact ball bearings and the rotor is fixed at the middle of spindle. The spindle used in CNC automatic lathe has been investigated using combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The Houbolt method is used for the integration of the system equations and the dynamic behavior of spindle is obtained considering unbalance mass of rotor. Results show that increasing rotational speed of spindle magnifies the whirl responses of spindle seriously. Also the whirl responses of spindle are affected by the other factors such as unbalance mass and bearing stiffness.

  • This paper discusses a model order reduction for large order rotor dynamics systems results from the finite element discretization. Typical rotor systems consist of a rotor, built-on parts, and a support system, and require prudent consideration in their dynamic analysis models because they include unsymmetric stiffness, localized nonproportional damping and frequency dependent gyroscopic effects. When the finite element model has a very large number of degrees of freedom because of complex geometry, repeated dynamic analyses to investigate the critical speeds, stability, and unbalanced response are computationally very expensive to finish within a practical design cycle. In this paper, the Krylov-based model order reduction via moment matching significantly speeds up the dynamic analyses necessary to check eigenvalues and critical speeds of a Nelson-Vaugh rotor system. With this approach the dynamic simulation is efficiently repeated via a reduced system by changing a running rotational speed because it can be preserved as a parameter in the process of model reduction. The Campbell diagram by the reduced system shows very good agreement with that of the original system. A 3-D finite element model of the Nelson-Vaugh rotor system is taken as a numerical example to demonstrate the advantages of this model reduction for rotor dynamic simulation.

  • The Rotating transmission is made up of belts, mass disks and gears. This transmission is controlled electro-mechanically by the motor and operation program. The control strategy of the system can be to change belts' stiffness and the masses of mass disk and gear. This system can be modeled as a rigid body, and also finds broad application in such diverse fields as machine tools, the cruise control system In automobiles, and control in the attitude and gimbals of spacecraft. This Transmission proves the necessity and effect of a closed loop control. The study of the Rotating Transmission excited by its base motion is able not only to predict the rotational performance, but to obtain the fundamental data for vibration isolation. In this research, we compared the response characteristics of the two controllers by means of the experiments on PD controller and PID controller added on integral action. Furthermore, we studied the response abilities such as steady state error, overshoot, and ect. and the response velocities such as rising time, settling time, and ect. in the rotating transmission.

  • Free vibration characteristics of cantilevered laminated composite beams with a transverse non0propagating open carck are investigated. In the present analysis a special ply-angle distribution referred to as asymmetric stiffness configuration inducing the elastic coupling between chord-wise bending and extension is considered. The open crack is modelled as an equivalent rotational spring whose spring constant is calculated on the basis of fracture mechanics of composite material structures. Governing equations of a composite beam with a open crack are derived via Hamilton's Principle and Timoshenko beam theory encompassing transverse shear and rotary inertia effect. the effects of various parameters such as the ply angle, fiber volume fraction, crack depth, crack position and transverse shear on the free vibration characteristics of the beam with a crack is highlighted. The numerical results show that the natural frequencies obtained from Timoshenko beam theory are always lower than those from Euler beam theory. The presence of intrinsic cracks in anisotropic composite beams modifies the flexibility and in turn free vibration characteristics of the structures. It is revealed that non-destructive crack detection is possible by analyzing the free vibration responses of a cracked beam.
