Growth and Tuber Yield of Liriope platyphylla WANG and TANG in Different Planting Density (맥문동(麥門冬)의 재식밀도(栽植密度)에 따른 생육(生育) 및 수양성(收量性))

  • This experiment was carried out to establish the optimum planting density for producing high tuber yield of Liriope platyphylla WANG and TANG using the recommended variety 'Maekmoondong 1'. Different planting distances such as $20cm\;/rows{\times}10cm\;/hill,\;30{\times}10,\;30{\times}30$ and different plant numbers like 2 plants /hill, 4,6 were combined to make different planting densities. Upper growth state was better by further spacing in case of leaf size, tiller number, fresh leaf weight per each hill. But unlike upper growth state tuber number and. its yield were highest at 372kg /10a and 43No. /hill. respectively with the planting density, $30cm{\times}10cm$, 6 plants per hill. Over growth of vegetative parts cut down the tuber yield. Correlations among leaf size, tiller number, leaf weight and root weight were positive. Tuber number was positively correlated with all characteristics except root weight.

Morphological Studies on Hair Growth Effect of Samultang-gamibang (사물탕가미방(四物湯加味方)이 원형탈모 생쥐의 발모효과에 관한 형태학적 연구)

  • This experiment examined the effect of Samultang-gamibang (SGB) on hair growth in spontaneous alopecia areata C57BL/6N mice. We first investigated hair growth effect of SGB compare to control groups after apply to oral administration for 10 weeks and regional treatment in skin for last 4 weeks. We second investigated the number of hair follicle and mast cells after treatment of SGB in spontaneous alopecia areata C57BL/6N mice for 10 weeks. We third investigated immunoreactive density of neuropeptides in skin of spontaneous alopecia areata C57BL/6N mice by immunohistochemical methods. The results were as follows : Hair growing effect of experimental group was observed from 7 weeks after administration of SGB (87.5%). In experimental group, the number of mast cells and eosinophils was significantly decreased compare to control group. Immunoreactive density of substance P and corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) in skin of experimental group was weakly stained in epidermis and subcutaneous tissue compare to control group. Immunoreactive density of CRF-receptor (CRF-R), CRF-binding protein (CRF-BP) in skin of experimental group was increased in epidermis, sebaceous gland, inner root sheath, outer root sheath and secondary hair germ epithelium compare to control group. These results suggest that SGB may be used in treatment of alopecia areata.

Growth of Creeping Bentgrass by Application of Compound Fertilizer Containing Microbes (미생물 함유 복합비료 시비에 따른 크리핑 벤트그래스의 생육)

  • Superintendents have been used microbial fertilizers to improve turfgrass growth and quality and to decrease turfgrass diseases in golf course. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of compound fertilizer containing microbe (MF) on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass with turf color index (TCI), chlorophyll index (ChI), root length, turfgrass density, clipping yield and nutrient content. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), compound fertilizer (21-17-17; CF) as control, compound fertilizer (14-6-17) containing microbe. In pot experiment, TCI and ChI of creeping bentgrass in MF plot were similar to those in CF. But clipping dry weight of MF plot increased by 39.1% compared to that of CF plot. At field experiment applied with MF treatment, TCI, ChI, root length, and nutrient content and uptake of creeping bentgrass were similar to those with CF treatment, but turfgrass density with MF higher about 7.9-15.8% than with CF. These results indicated that the application of MF improved growth and quality of creeping bentgrass by enhancing clipping yield and shoot number.

  • In 2006, pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, was isolated from about 50 years old trees of Pinus densiflora and P. koraiensis showing leaf-wilt and -drying symptoms in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do and Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. Isolation of pinewood nematodes from sapwood of infected pine trees showed no difference in population density between tree species and among the sampling heights on the main stem. Migration of pinewood nematodes in the host tree were investigated by inoculation of red pine (P. densiflora, 3 years old) seedlings with B. xylophilus. The nematodes seemed to move in red pine seedlings prior to multiplication and it might have taken about 20 days to start multiplication and expression of symptoms including wilt and dieback. In initial time after inoculation, nematodes started migration through the cortical resin canal from inoculated site and further showed upward and downward movements. More nematodes were observed in cortical resin canal during early period of inoculation and later in resin canal of xylem and tracheid also while, the pith still remained free from nematode. The density of B. xylophilus was higher in seedlings of low-vigor with poor root growth than in seedlings of normal root growth. Seedlings showing high density of B. xylophilus exhibited stem discoloration and secondary infection by fungus at the inoculation site.

Seeding Rate and Days for Low-density Transplant Cultivation (드문모심기 적정 파종량 및 육묘일수 분석)

  • In order to develop a safe seeding technology for low-density transplantation, we analyzed the changes in seeding growth according to different seeding rates and seeding days. We detected changes in leaf number and shoot diameter on the 10th seeding day, and in plant height on the 20th seeding day according to seeding rate. The increase in shoot and leaf number, and shoot diameter per seeding day decreased with anincrease in seeding rate. On seeding day 20, the reductions in shoot and root dry weights according to seeding rate was lower compared with those recorded at seeding day 10. Shoot dry weight was significantly related to root dry weight, plant height, and shoot diameter. With an increase in seeding rate, seeding health decreased and there was an increase in the rate of seeding health per seeding day decreased. For low-density transplantation, the optimal number of seeds required for transplanting 3-5 plants per hill is 11,000, which is estimated to be approximately 280-300 g of seeds for 22 g brown rice. Furthermore, the appropriate number of seeding days is estimated to be 13 to 16 days, which corresponds to a small reduction in seeding health.

  • The six phenolic compounds isolated from the root of Dipsacus asper, 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (1), methyl 3,4-di-O-caffeoyl quinate (2), 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (3), methyl 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinate (4), 4-5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (5), methyl 4,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinate (6) were continuously evaluated for their antioxidant activity using superoxide radical scavenging and AAPH-mediated (LDL) oxidation assay. The results demonstrated that compounds 1 - 6 had remarkable antioxidant activities with the $IC_50$ values ranging from 12.0 to $2.8{\mu}M$ in superoxide radical scavenging. They also inhibited AAPH-mediated low-density lipoprotein LDL oxidation by the generation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) with $IC_50$ ranging from 6.7 to $8.7{\mu}M$.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the proper species of turf and the ground structure for the turf sports grounds. Analysis items are particle distribution of sand and gravel, saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil hardness, and turf growth. Results of this study are as follows. 1)The particle distribution of sand used in the multi-layer rootzone is within the upper limit of the standard level. The diameter of mid-size grain({TEX}$D_{50}${/TEX})was 0.62mm and the value of uniformity ({TEX}$D_{90}${/TEX}/{TEX}$D_{10}${/TEX}) was 3.93. The particle size distribution of sand used in the single-layer rootzone was beyond the standard level as {TEX}$D_{50}${/TEX})=0.86 and {TEX}$D_{90}${/TEX}/{TEX}$D_{10}${/TEX}=8.86. 2) Saturated hydraulic conductivity of the sand was higher in the multi-layer rootzone than in the single-layer rootzone while bulk density was vice versa. 3) Surface hardness was high on Kentucky bluegrass+perennial ryegrass compared to zoysiagrass probably caused by root density. 4) Visual covering and visual rating were highly evaluated on zoysiagrass within summer while better evaluated on Kentucky bluegrass+perennial ryegrass throughout fall to spring. 5) Visual color was better evaluated on Kentucky bluegrass+perennial ryegrass than on zoysiagrass throughout the year. These studies are demanded urgently according to increase in interest in the ground and turf species of the turf sports ground because of World Cup 2002.

  • ZnO thin films were deposited on a-, c- and m- plane oriented 4H-SiC substrates by pulsed laser deposition. ZnO nanowires were formed on substrates by tube furnace. Shape and density of the ZnO nanowires were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscope. Average surface roughness and root mean square surface roughness were measure by atomic force microscope. Optical properties were investigated by Photoluminescence measurement. Density of ZnO nanowires grown on a-, c- and m-plane oriented 4H-SiC substrates were 17.89 ${\mu}m^{-2}$, 9.98 ${\mu}m^{-2}$ and 2.61 ${\mu}m^{-2}$, respectively.

  • The propagation speed of tribrachial flame in laminar propane jets has been investigated experimentally under normal and micro gravity conditions. The displacement speed was found to vary nonlinearly with axial distance because flow velocity along stoichiometric contour was comparable to the propagation speed of tribrachial flame for the present experiment. Approximate solutions for velocity and concentration accounting density difference and virtual origins have been used in determining the propagation speeds of tribrachial flame. Under micro gravity condition, the results showed that propagation speed of tribrachial flame is largely affected by the mixture fraction gradients, in agreement with previous studies. The limiting maximum value. of propagation speeds under micro gravity conditions are in good agreement with the theoretical prediction, that is, the ratio of maximum propagation speed to the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity is proportional to the square root of the density ratio of unburned to burnt mixture.
