  • Stress granules (SGs) are stress-induced subcellular compartments, which carry out a particular function to cope with stress. These granules protect cells from stress-related damage and cell death through dynamic sequestration of numerous ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) and signaling proteins, thereby promoting cell survival under both physiological and pathological condition. During tumorigenesis, cancer cells are repeatedly exposed to diverse stress stimuli from the tumor microenvironment, and the dynamics of SGs is often modulated due to the alteration of gene expression patterns in cancer cells, leading to tumor progression as well as resistance to anticancer treatment. In this mini review, we provide a brief discussion about our current understanding of the fundamental roles of SGs during physiological stress and the effect of dysregulated SGs on cancer cell fitness and cancer therapy.

  • Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are major sources of cellular oxidative stress. Specifically, cancer cells harbor genetic alterations that promote a continuous and elevated production of ROS. While such oxidative stress conditions could be harmful to normal cells, they facilitate cancer cell growth in multiple ways by causing DNA damage and genomic instability, and ultimately by reprogramming cancer cell metabolism. This review provides up to date findings regarding the roles of ROS generation induced by diverse biological molecules and chemicals in representative women's cancer. Specifically, we describe the cellular signaling pathways that regulate direct or indirect interactions between ROS homeostasis and metabolism within female genital cancer cells.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the roles of selenium in arsenic- and chromium-induced oxidative stress, which results in chromosomal damage, such as sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosomal aberration (CA). For this purpose, the frequency of CA and SCE related to the level of 0xidative stress were analyzed. Selenium decreased the frequency of CA induced by As. In order to evaluate the effect of selenium on clastogenic factors, media from As- and Cr-treated cells were ultrafiltered and added again to cells in the presence or absence of selenium. Selenium decreased the frequency of SCE by As and Cr. This observation indicates the possibility of presence of clastogenic factor. In addition, the clastogenic factor would be involed in oxidative stress since selenium decreased the level of oxidative stress. Thus, it is suggested that selenium may play a role as an anti-clastogenic effector by preventing the oxidative stress, thereby decreasing the frequency of Asand Cr-induced chromosomal damage.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the relationship between the level of emotional labor and job stress for public health nurses. Methods: The survey was conducted from Mar. to Oct. 2010 for collection of data from public health nurses (N=195). Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, t-test, Tukey HSD, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used in performance of data analysis. Results: Results of this study indicate that as the nurses grow older, they receive a larger salary and their emotional labor is reduced. The results of this study also demonstrate that the emotional labor is highest when their total nursing job work duration and public health nurse work duration are between six and 10 years. There is a significant difference in job stress of the two age groups between occupational roles and personal strain. This means that job stress is highest in nurses who are in their thirties and low fifties. Emotional labor showed positive correlation with occupational roles and personal strain of job stress, but showed negative correlation with personal resources. Conclusion: According to the results of this study, we suggest development of interventions to reduce emotional labor and job stress, taking into account the characteristics of age.

  • Pathogenesis-related proteins play multiple roles in plant development and biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Here, we characterize a rice defense related gene named "jasmonic acid inducible pathogenesis-related class 10" (JIOsPR10) to gain an insight into its functional properties. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed up-regulation of JIOsPR10 under salt and drought stress conditions. Constitutive over-expression JIOsPR10 in rice promoted shoot and root development in transgenic plants, however, their productivity was unaltered. Further experiments exhibited that the transgenic plants showed reduced susceptibility to rice blast fungus, and enhanced salt and drought stress tolerance as compared to the wild type. A comparative proteomic profiling of wild type and transgenic plants showed that overexpression of JIOsPR10 led to the differential modulation of several proteins mainly related with oxidative stresses, carbohydrate metabolism, and plant defense. Taken together, our findings suggest that JIOsPR10 plays important roles in biotic and abiotic stresses tolerance probably by activation of stress related proteins.

  • The purpose of this research project is to assess students' stress during clinical rotations and to suggest strategies for enhancing professional skills as well as the quality of clinical rotations among the students of dental technology. The participants included 200 sophomores and juniors from dental laboratory college located in Daegu and Jeju. Data was collected December 7, 2007, and March 7, 2008, by survey samplings. A total of 185 completed surveys were obtained and analyzed for this study. Findings from the study are summarized below. When age and stress were compared, it was found that younger students had higher levels of stress related to their environment, role, and activities. Regarding grade level and stress, students in lower levels were slightly (p<.01) more likely to have stress (Sophomore =2.91, junior =2.49). When the stress level was compared with students' satisfaction with their major, the less students were satisfied, the higher their level of stress was. The study found a slight (p<.05) difference between groups [satisfaction group (M=2.44), group in between satisfaction and dissatisfaction (M=2.58), and dissatisfaction (M=2.82)) in the relationship between satisfaction with the major and overall stress. Again, it appears that stress levels increase as satisfaction with the chosen major decreases. Third, the intensity of stress was affected by the environment in which students practiced, classmate relationships, roles, goals and values, and activities, and areas of performance. It showed that the groups unsatisfied and in-between with the quality of practice have more intensified stress than the group with satisfaction. The study showed a slight (p<.01) difference amongst groups [(satisfaction group (M=2.17), group in between satisfaction and dissatisfaction (M=2.68), and dissatisfaction (M=2.96)) in the relationship between satisfaction with the quality of the clinical rotation and overall stress. It appeared that higher levels of stress were seen with lower satisfaction with the major. Overall, students' level of stress was correlated with age and grade level, level of satisfaction in the major and the quality of the clinical rotation. Furthermore, schools need to focus on improving the environment where students practice, classmate relationships, roles, goals and values, and activities, and areas of performance. Dental laboratory colleges should concentrate on the basic case with the quality of clinical rotation and the chosen major. More skillful teaching and properly assigned clinical rotations and classes, along with a strong practical knowledge base applicable to clinical rotations will be needed in order to address these sources of dissatisfaction.

  • This study examined the effects of gender role attitudes and recognition of social support on parenting stress in double-income couples. Participants included 102 double-income couples who had children enrolled in employersupported childcare centers. The findings showed that those husbands or wives who had recognized a higher level of spousal cooperation reported to have felt lower levels of parenting stress. Further, husbands and wives who had held traditional attitudes about gender roles reported to experience higher levels of parenting stress. However, when the significance in predictability was compared, the recognition of spousal cooperation was found to be the only variable explaining the variance husbands' and wives' parenting stress levels.

  • The concept of empathy was examined In the professional caregiving relationship and its application was extended to the context of informal caregiving. Using the Lazarus and Folkman model, the influence of empathy on the caregiver's experience in the caregiving relationship was illustrated. The effects of the caregiver's empathy on his/her own caregiving outcomes were investigated by examining the relationship between empathy and burnout experience and life satisfaction. Empathy increased emotional exhaustion while increased personal accomplishment and personalization, indicating conflicting relationship between empathy and burnout. This conflict relationship between empathy and burnout can be explained by suggesting the distinct roles of two dimensions of empathy emotional and cognitive. The needs for more research to support the critical roles of empathy in informal caregiving context and to examine the definite roles of two dimensions of empathy were suggested.

  • Degradation of chlorophyll (Chl) by Chl catabolic enzymes (CCEs) causes the loss of green color that typically occurs during senescence of leaves. In addition to CCEs, STAYGREEN1 (SGR1) functions as a key regulator of Chl degradation. Although sgr1 mutants in many plant species exhibit a staygreen phenotype, the biochemical function of the SGR1 protein remains elusive. Many recent studies have examined the physiological and molecular roles of SGR1 and its homologs (SGR2 and SGR-LIKE) in Chl metabolism, finding that these proteins have different roles in different species. In this review, we summarize the recent studies on SGR and discuss the most likely functions of SGR homologs.
