This research proposes a vibration pattern algorithm to implement the haptic joystick to control a mobile robot at the remote site without watching the navigation environment. When the user cannot watch the navigation environment of the mobile robot, the user may rely on the haptic joystick solely to avoid obstacles and to guide the mobile robot to the target. To generate vibration patterns, there is a vibration motor at the bottom of the joystick which is held by the user to control the motion direction of the mobile robot remotely. When the mobile robot approaches to an obstacle, a pattern of vibration is generated by the motor, and by feeling the vibration pattern which is determined by the relative position of the mobile robot to the obstacle, the user can move the joystick to avoid the collision to the obstacle for the mobile robot. To generate the vibration patterns to convey the relative location of the obstacle near the mobile robot to the user, Fuzzy interferences have been utilized. To measure the distance and location of the obstacle near the mobile robot, ultrasonic sensors with the ring structure have been adopted and they are attached at the front and back sides of the mobile robot. The precise location of the obstacle is obtained by fusing the multiple data from ultrasonic sensors. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified through the real experiments and the results are demonstrated.
This paper proposes the trot gait pattern generation and online control methods for a quadruped robot to carry heavy loads and to move fast on uneven terrain. The trot pattern is generated from the frequency modulated pattern generation method based on the frequency modulated oscillator in order for the legged robots to be operated outdoor environment with the static and dynamic mobility. The efficiency and performance of the proposed method are verified through computer simulations and experiments using qRT-1/-2. In the experiments, qRT-2 which has two front legs driven by hydraulic linear actuators and two rear casters is used. The robot can trot at the speed up to 1.3 m/s on even surface, walk up and down the 20 degree inclines, and walk at 0.7 m/s on uneven surface. Also it can carry over 100 kg totally including 40 kg payload.
In order to accomplish complex navigational commands, humanoid robot should be able to modify its walking period, step length and direction independently. In this paper, a novel walking pattern generation algorithm is proposed to satisfy these requirements. Modification of the walking pattern can be considered as a transition between two periodic walking patterns, which follows each navigational command. By assuming the robot as a linear inverted pendulum, the equations of motion between ZMP(Zero Moment Point) and CM(Center of Mass) state is easily derived and analyzed. After navigational command is translated into the desired CM state, corresponding CM motion is generated to achieve the desired state by using simple ZMP functions. Moreover, when the command is not feasible, feasible command is alternated by using binary search algorithm. Subsequently, corresponding CM motion is generated. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by computer simulation.
We introduce a pattern generation method for a hopping one-legged robot and verify it experimentally. The pattern is derived from the liner and angular momentum of a COM (Center of Mass), which are pre-scheduled. Because of the relation between angular velocities of joints and momemtums of the COM, joint angle trajectories are easily obtained. In addition, the landing impact force is reduced by only adjusting the landing timing. In the experiment, the one-legged robot hops in place with 0.06 s of flying time, and makes continuous hopping. Based on our experimental results, the proposed method can be applied to hopping and running of biped humanoid robots.
In this paper, we present a comprehensive study for the development of quadruped walking robot. To understand the walking posture of a tetrapod animal, we begin with a careful observation on the skeletal system of tertapod animals. From taking a side view of their skeletal system, it is noted that their fore limbs and hind limbs perform characteristic roles during walking. Moreover, the widths of footprints and energy efficiency in walking have a close relationship through taking a front view of their walking posture. According to these observations, we present a control method where the kinematical solutions are not necessary because we develop a new rhythmic gait pattern for the quadruped walking robot. Though the proposed control method and rhythmic pattern are simple, they can provide the suitable motion planning for the robot since the resultant movement is based on the animal's movements. The validity of the proposed idea is demonstrated through dynamic simulations.
One of the most important functions of a biped robot is to walk naturally like human. For the human being, toe is very important joint in order to walk naturally. Thus, for a biped robot, the existence of toe joint much affects gait pattern generation and contributes to natural walking, which is similar to the human gait or faster walking like running. Since a conventional biped robot has the feet which consist of soles without toes, it seems difficult to walk naturally. For realizing the gait to be similar to human one, toes are necessary to the biped robot. In this paper, the effect of the toe joint for gait pattern generation is studied. In order to find the effect of toe joint, a biped r...
For worm robots applied to pipe inspection and colonoscopy, earthworm-like robots that have a locomotion pattern in backward wave or green caterpillar-like robots that have a locomotion pattern in forward wave have been studied widely. Note however that a method using a single and fixed locomotion pattern is not desirable in the sense of mobility cost, if there are various changes in pipe diameter. In this paper, locomotion patterns are considered for a semi-looper-like robot, which adopts a locomotion pattern of green caterpillars as the basic motion and sometimes can realize a locomotion pattern of looper, whose motion approximately consists of two rhythms or relatively low rhythm.
In this paper, the implementation of creative engineering robot with MCU platform is described. This robot, as a platform of robot system to be used as creative engineering education, has to satisfy restrictions in many aspects in order to study algorithm and apply for the processor based function and pattern recognition application. Considering many restrictions of the mobile platform for creative robot system, we made this robot autonomous by using efficiently the LINUX embedded system. And we choose Marvell Monahan processor(PXA320) as MCU flatform, and used CentOS5.2 as an embedded OS that has the function of robustness and optimality. For flexibility and modularity, the platform has expansion ports. The results of experiment are described to show the pattern matching of creative engineering mobile robot with LINUX programming environments.
Previous walking pattern generation methods could generate walking patterns that allow only straight walking on flat and uneven terrain. They were unable to generate modifiable walking patterns whereby the sagittal and lateral step lengths and walking direction can be changed at every footstep. This paper proposes a novel walking pattern generation method to realize modifiable walking of humanoid robots on unknown uneven terrain. The proposed method employs a walking pattern generator based on the 3-D linear inverted pendulum model (LIPM), which enables a humanoid robot to vary its walking patterns at every footstep. A control strategy for walking on unknown uneven terrain is proposed. Virtual spring-damper (VSD) models are used to compensate for the disturbances that occur between the robot and the terrain when the robot walks on uneven terrain with unknown height. In addition, methods for generating the foot and vertical center of mass (COM) of the 3-D LIPM trajectories are developed to realize stable walking on unknown uneven terrain. The proposed method is implemented on a small-sized humanoid robot platform, DARwIn-OP and its effectiveness is demonstrated experimentally.
