  • In this paper, a standard robot design methodology is suggested and a software architecture for modular robot is introduced. The robot is modularized by several functions, and the module is produced according to a standard proposal. Each module requires standard interface for communicate in distributed environments. Software architecture was developed to support distributed component environment, and application development support tools are developed for user convenience. Many robot softwares are developed in a library form so that, they are being used widely robot application software development. Also a device driver was developed for the mostly used sensor and actuator. It is verified that the modular robot can be applied in various fields through guide, errand and guard scenario.

  • This paper presents a robot system that combines computer network and an autonomous mobile robot where RTOS is installed. We propose a wireless communication protocol, and also implement it on the RTOS of the robot system. Main controller of the robot processes the control program as a task type in the real-time operating system. Peripheral devices are driven by the device driver functions with the dependency of the hardware. Because the client and server program was implemented to support the multi-platforms by Java SDK and Java JMF, it is easy to analyze programs, maintain system, and correct the errors in the system. End-user can control a robot with a vision showing remote sight over the Internet in real time, and the robot is moved keeping away from the obstacles by itself and command of the server received from end-user at the local client.

  • As the conventional hydraulic power steering system in the passenger vehicles is being rapidly replaced by EPS (Electric Power Steering) system, performance evaluation of the EPS system has become an important issue in the automotive industries. But the evaluation process takes significant expertise since steering conditions in the test protocols must be implemented with high accuracy. EPS HILS (Hardware-In the-Loop Simulation) system is developed together with robot steering system in this study. Main components of EPS HILS system include: C-EPS hardware, CarSim vehicle model, and road reaction force generation system powered by servo motor. The robot steering system, operated by another servo motor, was combined with EPS HILS system to substitute for steering efforts of human driver. The road reaction force generation system and the robot steering system were carefully validated by using the data obtained from vehicle tests. An on-center handling test was conducted by using EPS HILS system combined with the robot steering system. In the result of this study, robot-steered EPS HILS system developed with its high reliability and no need of skilled driver's, can be widely adopted to evaluate any performance of EPS system.

  • To overcome the weakness in the load capacity of conventional robot manipulators actuated by motors with the speed reducer such as the harmonic driver, we proposed a new closed-chain type of the robot actuator which is composed of the four-bar-link mechanism driven by the ball screw. The robot manipulator is revolute-jointed and composed of four axes. The base axis is actuated by the lineal actuator such as the ball screw, and the others are actuated by the proposed actuator. We analyzed the mechanism of the actuators of the robot joints, and developed the dynamics model. The dynamics are expressed in the joint coordinates and then they are mapped into the sliding coordinates of the ball screw. We performed fundamental tests on the structure of the robot.

  • In this paper, web based monitoring systems are implemented for multi-axis force control systems of an intelligence robot. A web based monitoring system is implemented by porting Linux at embeded systems which include Xscale processors. A divice driver is developed to receive data from multy-axis force sensors in Linux operation systems. To control this device driver, a soket program for web browser is also developped.

  • In this paper, a self-propulsive and small concrete floor finishing trowel robot with twin trowels is proposed. Due to the small size and omni-directional moving capability, it is adequate for small space such as apartment. By adjusting the posture of trowels, it can move in any direction without wheels. We used cheap PIC processor for the cost saving design of the modules and adopted mode processors for easy operation of control stick. For the position control of the robot, we made a motion control algorithm appealing to the stepping motor driver module and the wireless communication module between the robot and PC (or control stick). In this paper, we discuss the control problem of the floor finishing robot in order to move to the right position. By comparing experimental result with simulation, we show the validity of the robot mechanism, sensors, and the control system.

  • This paper present a robot controller developed for shipbuilding yard. Since shipbuilding process handles large work pieces and has dusty and noisy environment, the developed controller has separated architecture into main control part and servo control part. Main control part is located in control room while servo control part is located near robot with work pieces. Commutation between two parts is done through SynqNet and RS485. Air purging system is adapted to servo control part for better reliability. We aimed open architecture in both hardware and software architecture. For open hardware architecture, we employed Compact PCI (cPCI) because it is widely used bus system and very reliable. Since lots of commercial boards are available with cPCI interface, upgrade and reconfiguration is easy. For open software architecture, Windows XP Embedded is selected as operating system (OS), because it is very popular OS and most hardware vender supports device driver for the windows XP.

  • The purpose of this study was the development of a multi-joint robot manipulator for milking robot system. The multi-joint robot manipulator was controlled by 5 drivers with driver controller through the position information obtained from the image processing system. The robot manipulator to automatically attach each teat cup to the teats of a milking cow was developed and it's motion was accurately measured with error rate. Results were as follows. 1. Maximum errors in position accuracy were 4mm along X-axis, 4.5mm along Y-axis and 0.9mm along Z-axis. Absolute distance errors were maximum 4.8mm, minimum 2.7mm, and average 3.6mm. 2. Errors of repeatability were maximum 3.0mm along X-axis, 3.0mm along Y-axis, and 0.5mm along Z-axis. Distance error values were maximum 3.2mm, minimum 2.2mm, and average 2.5mm. It is envisaged that multi-joint robot manipulator can be applicate to milking robot system being developed in consideration of the experiment results.

  • Robot is composed of various devices but, those are incompatible with each other and hardly developing reusable control software. We suggest standard abstract interface for robot software component to make portable device and reusable control software of robot. This assures uniform abstracted interface to the device driver software like sensor and actuator and, control program can be transparent operation over device. We can develop devices and control software separately and independently with this idea. This makes it possible to replace existing devices with new devices which have a improved performance.

  • This paper presents an adaptive controller for the compensation of state-dependent disturbance with unknown amplitude in a digital servo motor system. The state-dependent disturbance is caused by friction and eccentricity between the wheel axis and the motor driver of a mobile robot servo system. The proposed control scheme guarantees an asymptotical stability for both the velocity and position regulation. An experimental result shows the effectiveness of the adaptive disturbance compensator for wheeled-mobile robot in a low velocity diffusion tracking. A comparative experimental study with a simple PI controller is presented.
