PURPOSES : In this study, we evaluated changes in the retroreflectivity and luminance of phosphorescent road line markings with changes in glass beads and line marking thickness. METHODS : The color of line markings affects their retroreflectivity. Using a chromaticity test, we conducted the analysis of whether phosphorescent road line markings adhered to the "KS M 6080" standard. Then, we measured the dry retroreflectivity and wet retroreflectivity for various glass bead refractive indices. We conducted wet retroreflectivity test using the EN 1436 standard as the basis. We also conducted luminance tests for different glass bead refractive indices and line marking thicknesses. RESULTS : 1. Phosphorescent road line markings specimens satisfied the "KS M 6080" standard. 2. In dry retroreflectivity test, phosphorescent road line markings sprayed with glass beads satisfied the national police agency standard ($240mcd/(m^2{\cdot}Lux)$). Wet retroreflectivity test results showed that except for one type of No.1 glass beads, phosphorescent road line markings specimens sprayed with glass beads of one type of No.3 and two types of No.1 satisfied the national police agency standard ($100mcd/(m^2{\cdot}Lux)$). 3. Phosphorescent road line markings had higher retroreflectivity than non-phosphorescent road line markings in the dry condition. 4. Phosphorescent road line markings sprayed with glass beads demonstrated improved luminance. Luminance increased with higher glass bead refractive index and with increased line marking thickness. However, when the thickness crossed a certain threshold, phosphorescence ceased to increase; this is a characteristic of the phosphorescence phenomenon. CONCLUSIONS : Visibility across short distances can be ensured when phosphorescent road line markings are sprayed with glass beads, because of the retroreflection phenomenon. It is also possible to ensure far visibility using phosphorescent road line markings.
The highway visibility reduction caused by fog is one of the major elements of traffic accidents. Though the fog warning systems can lead drivers into safe driving by letting them aware dangerous situations in advance, the optical sensors, such as fog sensor, has been extremely costly. Through recent studies, it is delivered that visibility measurements have become obtainable with relatively cheap cameras and their functionality is as similar as a driver' visual sense. Those measurements however require additional signs or ROI, so it is still costly and unable to utilize the conventional images from the existing systems. This study proposes a new method to detect the visibility in real time based on the conventional images from the existing CCTV cameras. The proposed method builds a road model and extracts and applies vehicle movements and visible lines - those highlight easy and quick visibility measurements. The proposed method has advantages of both (1) having possible day and night visibility measurements similar to drivers' visual sense and (2) being easily applied to the existing CCTV system without additional devices. This paper presents field experiments using images acquired from the Central Inland Expressway and discusses future research directions.
The performance of road markings is classified into the visibility at daytime, night time, wet condition and rainy conditions. The objective of this study is to obtain the driving safety of drivers under conditions of unstable weather condition such as the rain. The visibility of road markings is closely related to the preview time and detection distances and the ways to improve road marking materials and increase the dry retroreflectivity and wet retroreflectivity, which are the measures of daytime and nighttime visibility is researched to decrease the traffic accidents. For this purpose, Road marking glass beads with the refraction rate of 1.5 and 2.2 are introduced to raise the retroreflectivity. After investigating the minimum threshold retroreflectivity and Install Minimum retroreflectivity at home and abroad, minimum control values for the roadmarking visibility and improvement of nightime rainy retroreflectivity are suggested by physical properties and retroreflectivity experiments.

Snow, rain, fog, and particulate matter interfere with the vehicle driver's vision, which causes a non-secure safety distance and an increase in speed deviation, causing repetitive large-scale traffic accidents. This study developed a road environment sensor capable of measuring 11 types of fog, snow, rain, temperature, humidity, direction of wind, speed of wind, Insolation, atmospheric pressure, fine particles, rainfall, etc. and compared the visibility measured by the infrared signal value of the development sensor. The relationship between the existing fog visibility sensor and the development sensor measurement was derived from data measured at a visibility of 500m or less that directly affects road safety.

This paper proposes a method to recognize the noisiness of road images connected with the extraction of lane-related information in order to prevent the usage of erroneous information. The proposed method uses a fuzzy neural network(FNN) with the back-Propagation loaming algorithm. The U decides road images good or bad with respect to visibility of lane marks on road images. Most input parameters to the FNN are extracted from an edge distribution function(EDF), a function of edge histogram constructed by edge phase and norm. The shape of the EDF is deeply correlated to the visibility of lane marks of road image. Experimental results obtained by simulations with real images taken by various lighting and weather conditions show that the proposed method was quite successful, providing decision-making of noisiness with about 99%.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to analyze the requirements of the road traffic safety moderator robot when road repairing. The road traffic safety moderator robot is road traffic safety equipment and to conversions mechanical engineering and IT when road repairing. METHODS : The study used AHP based on the survey from road repair related expert that field engineers, design engineers, public officials and professors. The survey used paired comparison. The survey items were safety, convenience and economics. The safety is classified as visibility or efficiency, the convenience is classified as utility or mobility and the economics is classified as initial investment cost or maintenance $ management cost. The survey alternatives were the road traffic safety moderator robot, traffic regulation by human, traffic regulation by mannequin and traffic signs. The software for AHP is Expert Choice 2000. RESULTS : The results of AHP analyze, the weighted value of safety was analyzed with the highest at 0.488 of survey items. The weighted value of convenience was analyzed at 0.295, the weighted value of economics was analyzed at 0.218. The results of the road traffic safety moderator robot, the weight value of efficiency and utility were analyzed with the highest at 0.284 and 0.259 of alternatives. The weighted value of initial investment cost and maintenance & management cost were analyzed with the lowest at 0.203 and 0.211 of alternatives. The consistency test results of each items, null hypothesis is rejected because the CR values were 0.000 respectively. Therefore, the study results are consistency. CONCLUSIONS : The result of this study, overall value of the road traffic safety moderator robot came off second-best of other alternatives. The road traffic safety moderator robot has been received highest praise by the result of the study as good road traffic safety equipment when road repairing because the weighted values of efficiency and utility were analyzed with the highest of survey items. The efficiency mean securing safety and the utility mean practical assistance when road repairing. Currently, road mobility improved from the National Road Improvement. Nevertheless delineation system is facility that enhanced driver's safety, that was set up often inconsistent or nonexistent over the road exit ramp So it judged functional investigation will be necessary. This study suggested setting type of the delineation system. That was based on a field study and reviews the legal standard of it and considering driver's cognition behavior. For the study, make a 3D-simulation and so could objectively a comparative test. Comparison variable between delineation setting type is selected conspicuity and visibility. Cased that illustrated characteristics of driver's visual cognition behavior. The experiment was used Eye Marker Recorder for measure the gaze frequency more quantitatively and objectively. And used the ANOVA analysis for significance testing between delineation setting type. A significant percent of the conspicuity analyzed types(Safe mark, Obstacle Sign, Warning Light, and Tubular Maker) in road exit ramp for recognize. And gaze frequency that measure of effectiveness of visibility are measured. On the analysis result, the visibility was significance difference between delineation setting type and visibility of types was best.
PURPOSES: This study analyzes feasibility for application white pavement markings in the roadways with median barrier. METHODS : By reviewing numerous relevant laws, standards, and operational cases, the white pavement markings' excellence was demonstrated. Driver's behavior was analyzed through a virtual driving experiment using driving simulator and field tests. RESULTS:First, white pavement markings are superior to yellow pavement markings in terms of visibility, economics, and safety. Second, as a result of virtual driving experiment, the color of line in the roadway with median barrier didn't affect the driver's behavior such as the average vehicle speed, the distance bias in the lane and the separation distance from the centerline. Third, field test demonstrated that the driver tended to recognize the median barrier as an obstacle. In addition, the central driving ratio in the lane was increased due to improving the visibility of line at night in case of the white pavement markings. CONCLUSIONS : The application of white pavement markings in the roadways with median barrier can enhance traffic safety by improving the visibility of line at night.
This study proposes a novel performance measure, which is referred to as Hazardous Spacing Index (HSI), to be used for evaluating safety of traffic stream on freeways. The basic principle of the proposed methodology is to investigate whether drivers would have sufficient stopping sight distance (SSD) under limited visibility conditions to eliminate rear-end crash potentials at every time step. Both Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS) data were used to derive visibility distance (VD) and SSD, respectively. Moreover, the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) method was adopted to predict both VD and SSD in estimating predictive HSIs, which would be used to trigger advanced warning information to encourage safer driving. The outcome of this study is also expected to be used for monitoring freeway traffic stream in terms of safety.

Reflective and solar LED road studs are being used as a way of securing visibility for road environments. Road markers have various advantages and disadvantages in terms of versatility, efficiency, simplicity and visibility as individual products of reflective type and solar LED. However, in addition to the above, it is possible to prevent secondary accident after accident, It has a common drawback that it is difficult to have. In this paper, we propose a road stud system incorporating a wireless control function using RF - based communication with existing solar LED road studs and a system for controlling them. The proposed system is called the smart road stud system and it can control the equipment through the central control unit and the relay unit connected to the central control room by incorporating the RF communication function in the existing solar LED road stud. In addition, since it is possible to control the lighting method, color, etc. according to the road condition, it is possible to provide the driver with the state of the road to perform the function for preventing the second accident after the accident. It also adds features that minimize the ongoing power consumption of LED and RF communications. In order to verify the validity of the proposed system, prototypes were produced and it was confirmed that it is possible to act as a university for prevention of accident after accident by linking with other traffic system besides accident prevention function by securing existing visibility.
