In vehicular networks, diverse safety information can be shared among vehicles through internet connections. In vehicle-to-internet communications, vehicles on the road are wirelessly connected to different cloud networks, thereby accelerating safety information exchange. Onboard sensors acquire traffic-related information, and reliable intermediate nodes and network services, such as navigational facilities, allow to transmit safety information to distant target vehicles and stations. Using vehicle-to-network communications, we minimize delays and achieve high accuracy through consistent connectivity links. Our proposed approach uses intermediate nodes with two-hop separation to forward information. Target vehicle detection and routing of safety information are performed using machine learning algorithms. Compared with existing vehicle-to-internet solutions, our approach provides substantial improvements by reducing latency, packet drop, and overhead.
Exceeding the speed limit during vehicle driving is a key factor in the severity of lots of road accidents, and SLIF(Speed Limit Information Function) application is in the initial phase in Korea. SLIF helps the drivers to observe a speed limit when they are driving by providing alert and informing the current limit speed information based on external data using camera and/or digital map, for that reason, environmental conditions could be causes of SLIF malfunctions. In this study, design adequacy analysis of SLIF in respect of false recognition as the Korea traffic environment has been performed. As tentative results, road conditions and structure of speed limit sign as well as system performance often caused misrecognition.
This study proposes a novel performance measure, which is referred to as Hazardous Spacing Index (HSI), to be used for evaluating safety of traffic stream on freeways. The basic principle of the proposed methodology is to investigate whether drivers would have sufficient stopping sight distance (SSD) under limited visibility conditions to eliminate rear-end crash potentials at every time step. Both Road Weather Information Systems (RWIS) and Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS) data were used to derive visibility distance (VD) and SSD, respectively. Moreover, the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) method was adopted to predict both VD and SSD in estimating predictive HSIs, which would be used to trigger advanced warning information to encourage safer driving. The outcome of this study is also expected to be used for monitoring freeway traffic stream in terms of safety.

In vehicular network, the basic goal is to provide vehicle safety service and commercial service such as ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) or video, etc on the road. And most research concentrated on transportation of safety message in congestion situation. It is important to allocate channel for safety message in congestion situation, but providing suitable service is also important problem in vehicular network. For this reason, IEEE 1609.4 allocate 4 multiple service channels (SCHs) for non-safety data transfer. But, in congestion situation with many vehicles, the contention for channel acquisition between services becomes more severe. So services are provided improperly because of lack of service channel. This paper suggests dynamic channel allocation algorithm. The proposed algorithm is that RSU(RaodSide Unit) maintain and manage the information about service and status of channels. On based of the SJF(Shortest Job First) scheduling using those information, RSU selects the most appropriate channel among the 4 SCHs allocated by IEEE 1609.4 in network congestion situation.

3D positional information of lane can be automatically calculated tv combining GPS data, IMU data if coordinates of lane centers are given. The Road Safety Survey and Analysis Vehicle(RoSSAV) is currently under development to analyze three dimensional safety and stability of roads. RoSSAV has GPS and IMU sensors to get positional information of the vehicle and two road-facing CCD cameras for extraction of lane coordinates. In this paper, we develop technology that automatically detects centers of lanes from the road-facing cameras of RoSSAV. The proposed algorithm defines line-support regions by grouping pixels with similar edge orientation and magnitude together and extracts a line from each line support region by planar fitting. Then if extracted lines and the region in-between satisfy the criteria of brightness and width, we decide this region as lane. The proposed algorithm was more precise and stable than the previously proposed algorithm based on brightness threshold method. Experiments with real road scenes confirmed that lane was effectively extracted by the proposed algorithm.

As interest in social safety has recently increased at the national level, the various activities which can effectively prevent crimes are being carried out. Because the existing maps related to crimes provide the information about the present condition of crimes by administrative district for users, women and pedestrians who go by night could not actually grasp safe roads in advance. Therefore, this study developed the methodology that can easily extract dangerous areas due to crimes by the digital map 2.0. In the digital map 2.0, location and attribute information of center-lines of roads and building layers were used to find dangerous areas of crimes in these layers. Pavement materials and road width which are already built by the attribute information were used in the center-lines of roads. Crossing angles that roads and roads cross each other were additionally extracted and utilized. The attribute information about building types were input in the building layers of the digital map 2.0. The areas that are more the threshold values set by totaling up all the risk scores when considering pavement materials, road width, crossing angles of road, and building types in the center-lines of roads and road crossings were extracted as the dangerous areas that crimes can occur. Verification of the developed methodology was done by experiment. In the spatial apsect, the dangerous areas of crimes could be found by using the digital 2.0, roads, and building layers only through the experiment. In the administrative aspect to prevent crimes, additional installation of safety facilities such as street lights and security lights in the identified areas which are vulnerable for crimes is thought to be increasing safety of dangerous areas.
In this study, the damages and condition of road pavement were analyzed using pavement management system (PMS) for the structural improvement. Problems of road pavement management were issued by in-depth interview with workers in charge of plant, construction and supervision. By surveying advanced road pavement management, the way how to improve road pavement management in Seoul was discussed. In conclusion, it is necessary to take measures against road heavy traffic and heavy rain in summer. It was found that the problem of early damages of road pavement due to uniform layout with analyzing life cycle cost (LCC). According to the results of survey, it was suggested to strength practical training and to control precisely the temperature of pavement in the process of production and construction.

Traffic information protocol in DMB is very different from existing analog broadcasting and wireless communication network. In this paper, we examined whether traffic information protocol of Europe Broadcasting Union(TPEG) is applicable to domestic DMB. Also, we proposed a division of classification on kinds of franc information, and related data that it is required to transmit traffic information of TPEG form. We composed of experiment equipment and studied whether is expressed traffic informations as like accident, event, traffic condition and CCTV image on car navigation system. The results obtained it can be given expression to phrases from TPEG streaming data and to link with electronics map by decoding TPEG straming data. Also it can be expressed CCTV and graphic image which is composed of TPEG form.

Road signs provide important safety information about road and traffic conditions to drivers. Road signs include not only common traffic signs but also warning information regarding unexpected obstacles and road constructions. Therefore, accurate detection and identification of road signs is one of the most important research topics related to safe driving. In this paper, we propose a 3-D vision technique to automatically detect and track road signs in a video sequence which is acquired from a stereo vision camera mounted on a vehicle. First, color information is used to initially detect the sign candidates. Second, the SVM (Support Vector Machine) is employed to determine true signs from the candidates. Once a road sign is detected in a video frame, it is continuously tracked from the next frame until it is disappeared. The 2-D position of a detected sign in the next frame is predicted by the 3-D motion of the vehicle. Here, the 3-D vehicle motion is acquired by using the 3-D pose information of the detected sign. Finally, the predicted 2-D position is corrected by template-matching of the scaled template of the detected sign within a window area around the predicted position. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect and track many types of road signs successfully. Tracking comparisons with two different methods are shown.

Developed safety system which transfers danger information to rear cars for accident prevention when drivers detect a accident, a dropping or a freezing during driving on the high way. To prevent an accident, each vehicles mount OBU which is made up of a GPS unit and a transmitter-receiver and the trace of road is always renewed and saved in OBU per a regular past distance. When the driver see dangerous situation, transfer a danger pattern and a trace information by pressing button. All cars which receive information compare the received data with the original data. And then, only cars which are located at the rear in a regular distance respond and occur a warning. Performed a road test at the rate of $30{\sim}50$ kilometer a hour using two test cars which saved about 120meter's space between them were mounted OBU which had 447Mhz transceiver. As a result of the experiment, communication between test cars had no problem. Accordingly, it can use a safety driving device because driver can notice a danger situation and set themselves ready for it using this system in advance.
