PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of size and depth of cavities on the pavement failure using the full-scale accelerated pavement testing. METHODS : A full-scale testbed was constructed by installing the artificial cavities at a depth of 0.3 m and 0.7 m from the pavement surface for accelerated pavement testing. The cavities were made of ice with a dimension of 0.5 m*0.5m*0.3m, and the thickness of asphalt and base layer were 0.2 m and 0.3 m, respectively. The ground penetrating radar and endoscope testing were conducted to determine the shape and location of cavities. The falling weight deflectometer testing was also performed on the cavity and intact sections to estimate the difference of structural capacity between the two sections. A wheel loading of 80 kN was applied on the pavement section with a speed of 10 km/h in accelerated pavement testing. The permanent deformation was measured periodically at a given number of repetitions. The correlation between the depth and size of cavities and pavement failure was investigated using the accelerated pavement testing results. RESULTS : It is found from FWD testing that the center deflection of cavity section is 10% greater than that of the intact section, indicating the 25% reduction of modulus in subbase layer due to the occurrence of the cavity. The measured permanent deformation of the intact section is approximately 10 mm at 90,000 load repetitions. However, for a cavity section of 0.7 m depth, a permanent deformation of 30 mm was measured at 90,000 load repetitions, which is three times greater than that of the intact section. At cavity section of 0.3 m, the permanent deformation reached up to approximately 90 mm and an elliptical hole occurred at pavement surface after testing. CONCLUSIONS : This study is aimed at determining the pavement failure mechanism due to the occurrence of cavities under the pavement using accelerated pavement testing. In the future, the accelerated pavement testing will be conducted at a pavement section with different depths and sizes of cavities. Test results will be utilized to establish the criteria of risk in road collapse based on the various conditions.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suitability of emergency underground cavity restoration method filling cavity with expansive material based on numerical analysis. For the numerical analysis, experiments were conducted to evaluate properties of expansive material. Based on the measured expansion pressure of the expansive material from the experiment, behavior of underground cavity restoration with various cavity dimensions (variation of height and width of rectangular-shape cavity) was numerically assessed. As a result of analysis, the vertical displacements of the top and bottom of cavity were significantly influenced by the cavity width and lateral displacements of cavity sides were highly dependent on cavity height. These vertical and lateral displacements were increased with increasing expansion pressure of expansive material. Also, when the expansion pressure was applied, the vertical displacement of the upper surface layer of the road was less dependent on cavity height, and was greatly influenced by cavity width.
Purpose: In this study, the location and history information of the cavity identified in the cavity exploration, such as repacking of the pavement, is not known. Therefore, it is to review the field applicability of RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) systems that enable anyone to accurately identify information. Method: Basic experiments were conducted for field applicability for cavity recognition distance, recognition and recognition rate, tag performance and tag type, reader interference, communication, underground burial impact, and duplicate recognition by RFID system. Results: As a result of the depth of tag and reader recognition, the electronic tag chips and readers applied in the basic experiment are judged to be effectively applicable in the field environment where the road cavity is located. Conclusion: The RFID tags for field application of the pavement management system store various information such as location and size of cavity, identification date, cause of occurrence, and surrounding underground facilities to maximize cavity management effect with a system that can be computerized and mobile utilization.

The collapse of the underground cavity can cause the abrupt local subsidence of the ground surface. It can be hazardous to the stability of road and building for human activity. Therefore it is necessary to develop reinforcement methods for the filling of the underground cavity. This study was executed to improve the material quality and systems to fill the calcium-aluminate mineral $(C_{12}A_7)$ environmentally, and minimize the loss of filling materials for the steep underground cavity. Filling material which was developed in this study is composed of rapid hardening material and additives. The developed material had rapid hardening and non-separation ability in the water cavity condition, so it made the effective underground dam in the cavity with prevention of material loss when it was poured in the water cavity. Results of heavy metal leaching test for environmental assessment showed that it was environmentally suiTable material for the filling in the mine cavity.

Sound transmission from the luggage comparment into the car cabin is important in the viewpoint if exhaust and road noises of passenger cars. In this paper, acoustic modal coupling between passenger and luggage compartments through loudspeaker holes at parcel shelf is dealt with for a sedan type passenger car with rigid rear seat. For these purposes, a half-scaled model car is tested and computed by the indirect BEM. Predicted acoustic transfer functions are compared with experimental ones and they agree reasonably well. It is found that the fore-aft resonance frequencies of the passenger cavity in the absence of coupling holes are tend to shift to higher frequencies when the luggage compartment is coupled to the passenger cavity.
As construction for road and train tunnel is increasing, various geotechnical conditions can be faced during the construction stage. Especially, if the tunnel is located in limestone area, the cavity is mostly to locate in tunnel planning location. One or some cavities which can be harmful for tunnel safety are predicted. Hence, this study was fulfilled to confirm the influence between tunnel and cavity using laboratory scale down model test and numerical analysis. The scale down model test was carried out to confirm the failure load of the model ground about the interval length of cavity and tunnel and to analyze behaviour characteristics of the model ground on the cavity shape. From the model test result, the failure load decrease in accordance with decreasing of interval length between cavity and tunnel within 0.5D. The numerical analyses were carried out for verification about scale down model test. From the numerical analysis result, tunnel safety decreases in the case of the interval between cavity and tunnel within 0.5D.
Purpose: The cavity exploration of the lower part of the road is carried out to prevent ground-sinking. However, the detected communities cannot be identified by the cavity location and history information, such as repackaging the pavement. Therefore, the field applicability of RFID systems was evaluated in this study to enable anyone to accurately identify information. Method: During temporary recovery, tag recognition distance and recognition rate were measured according to underground burial materials and telecommunication tubes using RFID systems with electronic tag chips attached to the bottom of the rubber cap. Result: The perceived distance and perceived rate of depth for each position of the electron tag did not significantly affect the depth up to 15cm, but it did have some effect if the depth was 20cm. In addition, water effects from nearby underground facilities and rainfall are relatively small, and the effects of wind will need to be considered during the weather conditions of the road. Conclusion: The RFID tags for field application of the pavement management system store various information such as location and size of cavity, identification date, cause of occurrence, and surrounding underground facilities to maximize cavity management effect with a system that can be computerized and mobile utilization.

The development of low rolling resistance tire with weight reduction in tire and vehicle may induce high level of tire/road noise, especially the rumble road noise on rough road. In this paper, the design factor for good rumble noise is considered in view of tire and vehicle. For the 3 mid-sized sedans, the rumble noise is very sensitive to the test vehicle. And it is concluded that the tire with high tread part stiffness and low sidewall part stiffness shows best rumble noise performance, and the rumble noise is in trade-off relation with cavity resonance noise. So, it is desirable to select and change proper construction design factors to have good tire/vehicle rumble noise.
A study on the analysis of underground ground condition using 3D-GPR exploration was carried out in this paper. The test bed was constructed similar to the field, and the detection analysis was carried out for each depth of cavity and underground burial. Through this, we were able to know the permittivity of the ground by inversion, and we could confirm the depth of detection for the joint by accurate calculation. We confirmed the signal waveforms in the cavity under the road through 3D-GPR exploration, analyzed more quantitatively in subjective and empirical analysis. The subsidence and depth of the subsurface settlement can be observed through 3D-GPR survey, and ground condition change after the ground reinforcement can be confirmed through the exploration section.
