  • In the daily multi-reservoir operating problem, monthly storage targets can be used as principal operational guidelines. In this study, we tested the use of a simple back-propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to derive monthly storage guideline for daily Coordinated Multi-reservoir Operating Model (CoMOM) of the Han-River basin. This approach is based on the belief that the optimum solution of the daily CoMOM has a good performance, and the ANN model trained with the results of daily CoMOM would produce effective monthly operating guidelines. The optimum results of daily CoMOM is used as the training set for the back-propagation ANN model, which is designed to derive monthly reservoir storage targets in the basin. For the input patterns of the ANN model, we adopted the ratios of initial storage of each dam to the storage of Paldang dam, ratios of monthly expected inflow of each dam to the total inflow of the whole basin, ratios of monthly demand at each dam to the total demand of the whole basin, ratio of total storage of the whole basin to the active storage of Paldang dam, and the ratio of total inflow of the whole basin to the active storage of the whole basin. And the output pattern of ANN model is the optimal final storages that are generated by the daily CoMOM. Then, we analyzed the performance of the ANN model by using a real-time simulation procedure for the multi-reservoir system of the Han-river basin, assuming that historical inflows from October 1st, 2004 to June 30th, 2007 (except July, August, September) were occurred. The simulation results showed that by utilizing the monthly storage target provided by the ANN model, we could reduce the spillages, increase hydropower generation, and secure more water at the end of the planning horizon compared to the historical records.

  • In this study, the management polices of micropollutants (MPs) were reviewed and the future management strategy was discussed considering climate change and etc. In Korea, the investigation of drinking water has been actively carried out for the priority contaminants as well as MPs. Recently river and lake waters have been also examined for MPs. However, the coverage and depth of the investigation is limited. Moreover, climate change is likely to increase air & water temperature and it will affect the hydrological cycle. Such changes may increase the residual concentrations of MPs in water system. As water reuse increases, the residual MPs of the recycled water may create public concerns. Thus, in a viewpoint of the precautionary principle, more stringent management of MPs is recommended for the drinking water and the body-contact water use. For the surface water, more studies are necessary to understand the ecological risk by MPs.

  • The need for a systematic drought management has increased since last countrywide drought in 2001. Naturally various studies for establishing drought plan and preventing drought disaster have been conducted. MODIS image provided by Terra satellite has effective spatial and temporal resolutions to observe spatial and temporal characteristics of a region. MODIS data products are easy for preprocessing and correcting geometrically and provide various data set in regular which are applicable for drought monitoring. In this study, Ansung river and the upstream of South Han river basin was chosen for case study to identify and assess spring drought. The multi-period MODIS image and accumulated precipitation were used to detect not only the drought year but also the vegetation change of normal year and the result were compared with various spatial data. The result shows NDVI and LSWI with is more appropriate than LST for assesing spring drought in Korea and two month cumulative precipitation has moderate relationship with drought. It is necessary to use MODIS image which has same period and same space for effective drought analysis because drought is also affected by landover and altitude.

  • The goal of this study is to recommend a new type of stage-discharge rating curve ($Q=p(h-e)^{\beta}-{\gamma}$) useful for satisfying divergence, and one other seemingly irresolvable problem related to exited rating curves, while also extending this rating curve model. The problem of divergence is that during the finding of the CZF (cease-to-zero flow) parameter e and while minimizing the sum of total errors of the estimated curve, the exponential parameter ${\beta}$ become an abnormally large value. The insoluble problem is that when the value e is greater then the recorded minimum at the gauged stage, it is impossible to have a negative logarithm value (h-e). The two problems above can be satisfied by adapting the control value ${\gamma}$, which affects the reduction of ${\gamma}$ and gives us the possibility of controlling (h-e) over zero. The study results show that the effects of parameter ${\gamma}$ are very similar to that of e when conducting physical and sensitivity analyses. This system can be used towards developing a new stage-discharge rating curve for river discharge, for use in evaluating the acceptability of existing stage-discharge rating curves generated by using hydrologic analyses at all stations.

  • This study aimed to develop a flow measurement method using drone in flood season. Measuring flow in all branches is difficult to conduct annually due to budget and labor limitation, safety and river works. Especially when heavy rain like storm comes, changes in stage-discharge relationship should be reviewed; however, it is usually impeded by the aforementioned issues. To solve the problem, it developed a simple measuring method with a minimum of labor and time. A numeric map and numeric orthophoto coordinate of South Korea are mostly based on Transverse Mercator Projection (TM) in accordance with rectangular coordinate system and use World Geodetic Reference System 1980 (GRS80) oval figure for conversion. Applying a concept of aerial photogrammetry, it located four visible Ground Control Points (GCP) near the river at Uijeongbu-si (Singok Bridge) and Yeongdong-gun (Youngdong 2nd Bridge) station and measured the coordinates using VRS DGPS. Hovering at a same level, drones took orthophoto of water surface at an interval of 3 seconds. It defined the pictures with GRS80 TM coordinate system, a rectangular coordinate system and then conducted an orthometric correction using GCP coordinates. According to X and Y coordinate analysis, it estimated the distance between the floating positions at 3 seconds-intervals and calculated the flow through the flow area according to the flow path. This study attested applicability of the flow measurement method using drone in flood season by applying the rectangular coordinate system based on the concept of aerial photogrammetry.

  • To evaluate environmental charateristics of the South Sea and East China Sea on summer, water and sediment quality were measured in June 2001-2003. Surface layer was affceted by Warm water originated from the high temperature and salinity-Tsushima Warm Current, on the other hand, Yellow Sea Cold Water was spread to the bottom layer in the south-western part of the Jeju island, and salinity at stations near the Yangtze River was decreased below 29psu because of a enormous freshwater discharges. Thermocline-depth was formed at about 10m, and chlorophyll maximum layer was existed in and below the thermocline. COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand), TN(Total Nitrogen), and TP(Total Phosphorus) concentrations showed seawater quality grade II in surface layer of the most area, but concentrations of such as COD, Chl. a, TSS(Total Suspended Solid), and nutrients were greatly increased in the effect area of Yangtze River discharges. Correlations between dissolved inorganic nitrogen, Chl. a and salinity were negative patterns strongly, in contrast, those of inorganic phosphorus, COD and Chl. a were positive, which indicates that phytoplankton biomass and phosphorus are considered as important factors of organic matter distribution and algal growth, respectively. in the study area. The distribution of ignition loss, COD, and $H_2S$ of surface sediment were in the ranges of 2.61-8.81%, $0.64-11.86mgO_2/g-dry$, and ND-0.25 mgS/g-dry, respectively, with relatively high concentration in the eastern part of the study area. Therefore, to effective and sustainable use and management of this area, continuous monitoring and countermeasures about major input sources to the water and sediment, and prediction according to the environmental variation, are necessary.

  • This study is on the changing pattern of fish-and-shellfish uses during the last two thirds of Chosun period on the premise that they are influenced by development of fishing technology. With a literary approach, this paper researches how fish-and-shellfish production and consumption pattern changed, especially in relation to technological development of fisheries. First, we examine into the changes of fishery production. And next, we analyze the kind and cooking method of fish-and-shellfish in [Eum-sik-di-mi-bang](1670) and [Gyu-hap-chong-seo](1815). The analysis of two books revealed that there were significant differences in fish-and-shellfish uses. Because the two books were written with a gap of 145 years and the development of fishing technology and remarkable changes of fishery production affected on the fish-and-shellfish uses. Due to primitive fishing tools and skills, fresh-water and reverse-river-fish and shellfish had been caught in substantial amount until the middle ages of Chosun period. As a result, the availability of seafood were limited extremely even in the upper classes. These situations are evidenced by the analysis of [Eum-sik-di-mi-bang]. Only 12 kinds of fish-and-shellfish are described in [Eum-sik-di-mi-bang]. Most of the sesfoods is mollusc which is easy to catch. As for the salt-water fish, dried cod and dried herring were mentioned. Mullet, the reverse-water-fish, is used most frequently. Only one kind of 'Hoe', which needs extreme freshness, is described. This means that the use of fresh fish-and-shellfish was very limited to some kinds which could be caught near the village. As the netting fishery began to be developed in the 18th century, the production of some salt-water fishes, such as anchovy, shrimp, yellow corvina, pollack, and herring, had increased remarkably to make marine resources more available. Small fish, such as anchovy and shrimp were preserved as 'Jeot-gal' and sold nationwide. Therefore, 'Jeot-gal' and seafood could be used in Kimchi around this time and had a deep influence on the change of Kimchi in taste and nutrition. In [Gyu-hap-chong-seo], 33 kinds of fish-and-shellfish are described. Including cod and herring, 17 kinds of sea water fish and mollusc are mentioned. Some of these are consumed in fresh state, neither as dried nor as salted. Because the merchants promoted the transport of seafoods to other regions according to the growth of commercial economy. As a result the diet of the people could be enriched by the various seafoods.

  • Lately, it is an important concern in water resources research to maintain a stable water supply according to a future climate change and an increase in water use. In Han-River basin, approximately 10 % of water resources that is provided the capital region (Gyeonggi, Seoul etc.) has been reduced as a consequence of the construction of Imnam Dam (storage volume: 27 billion $m^3$) located in the upper Hwacheon Dam upstream area. Therefore, streamflows have decreased in Bukhangang basin, but it could not be evaluated quantitatively. In this study, SWAT-K which is the physically based long-term runoff simulation model, was used in order to evaluate the effect of Imnam Dam on the reduced inflow to Hwacheon Dam according to the change of hydrological condition in the upstream area of Hwacheon Dam. For the model input data of North Korea area, meteorological data of GTS (Global Telecommunication System) were used, and soil maps by FAO/UNESCO (2003) were applied. Temporal variations of water resources is investigated with comparison of observed and simulated inflows at Hawcheon Dam site. Also, annual, monthly, seasonal decreases in water resources were evaluated using the flow duration analysis of simulated streamflows with or without Imnam dam.

  • In this study, a watershed-based surface water and groundwater integrated model, SWAT-MODFLOW was used to quantify the stream flow depletion due to groundwater pumping for the Sinduncheon watershed. Complex water use conditions such as water taken from a stream, sewage disposal release, irrigation from agricultural reservoir, groundwater pumping were considered for simulations. In particular, the model was revised to reflect the effects of reservoir operation and return flow from the used groundwater on streamflow variation. The simulated results showed that the groundwater pumping at current status has induced the decrease of more than 10% in annual average streamflow and 40% in drought flow at the outlet of the Sinduncheon watershed, The simulated results also revealed that the vast water withdrawals at green house areas during winter season have dramatically changed streamflow from April to June. The streamflow depletion was mainly attributed to pumping wells located within the distance of 300 m from the stream for Sinduncheon watershed.
