A bedrock river is a channel in which bedrock is exposed along the channel bed or walls for at least approximately half of its length. In some case, a continuous alluvial veneer may be present, but this is completely mobilized during floods. From the point of long term landscape evolution during the Quaternary, the bedrock channel determines local base level and the lowering rate of bedrock channels controls the rate of erosion and transport processes and forms on the adjacent hillslopes. In this review, various erosional processes in bedrock river channels are classified and discussed. Especially, theoretical and numerical models on channel bed abrasion with bed load sediment particles are introduced and discussed.
The purpose of this study consists in introducing and examining the previous river classification systems applicable to the river improvement technique including geomorphological considerations, and developing a new system using the geomorphological criteria which represent the morphology of rivers. A newly developed system uses the channel reach as a classifying unit which is delineated by upstream and downstream tributaries. It adopts three basic geomorphological criteria for classification: 1) valley-floor width index(VI) reflecting the confinement of the channel in the valley, 2) sinuosity(P) which expresses the channel planform, and 3) bed material($d_{50}$). The system is composed of 24 stream types. Concerning every stream type, valley forms, principal bed forms and fluvial processes with disturbance elements are briefly presented. Finally, the applicability of this system to the Chungmi Stream and the Imjin River data in comparison with that of Rosgen system is examined.
Analysis of No. 199∼145 cross-sections set up by the Ministry of Construction (1978) in the middle reaches of the Sumjin River around Sunchang, Daegang, and Goksung areas have been done for delineating the changes In fluvial geomorphic features. The entire river-bed in the study area has been considerably degraded since 1978. In some cross-sections, the thalweg shillings are observed. Two aspects are responsible for the erosion-dominant environment. First, flow velocity has been increased. Human activities including wetland destruction, ex-channel destruction and artificial levee construction reduced the channel width, and fixed the channel geometry. This has resulted in increase of the water velocity. Pebble and granule∼coarse sand are prevailing on the river-bed, indicate the high speed of the currents. Second, aggregate has been intensively mined during 1980s∼1990s around the areas. Especially, in the right side of the cross-sections No. 188∼187 and the left side of the cross-section No. 155, erosion toward under the artificial levee is remarkable. This can be led to bank failure in case of heavy rainfall.
Ecological instream flow was quantitatively calculated based on the river characteristics and fish habitat in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir. The river bed and width did not change from 1988 before the am construction to 2004 after the dam construction, but the bed sediment size was attenuated a little in 2004. According to result that investigate fishes, 4 family 11 species including Acheilognathus koreensis were collected. Among them, Zacceo koreanus of cyprinidae was dominant, and Coreoleuciscus splendidus did sub-dominant. The habitat suitability indexes were estimated for two fish species Zacco koreanus and Coreoleuciscus splendidus using Physical Habitat Simulation System (PHABSIM) considering the river characteristics. In Gamdong and Daeti sites, the optimal ecological flow for Z. koreanus and C. splendidus were $13.90\sim12.60\;m^3\;s^{-1}$ and $15.50\sim11.60\;m^3\;s^{-1}$, respectively. In contrast, the optimal flow for the two species in Bunam site were $7.00\;m^3\;s^{-1}$. The ecological instream flow in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir was between normal and high flow rate.

By the activation of environment-friendly river works, application of vegetation mats is increasing, however, evaluation techniques for hydraulic stability of vegetation mats are not presented. This study is conducted to develop the objective test method for vegetation mats. Two kind of vegetation mats are tested by the real scale experiments, and hydraulic quantities are measured and analyzed to evaluate acting shear stresses. To evaluate soil loss, Terrestrial 3D LiDAR measurement is conducted and soil loss index are calculated from changes of bed elevation. Quantified evaluation for permissible shear stresses is conducted by graphical method for acting shear stresses and soil loss index. By the results of precision survey, changes of sub soil are limited to local range in stable cases and relatively large changes of sub soil which is similar to natural river bed are detected in unstable cases. From the study, evaluation of permissible shear stresses by ASTM D 6040 is avaliable in the failure mechanism and failure criteria by soil loss index.

The Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NREB) was constructed in 1987 to prevent saltwater intrusion and to provide the sustainable water supply in the upstream channel. Sediment dredging has been conducted to eliminate deposited sediments in the approached upstream channel of the NREB. Fluvial changes and sedimentation problems have been continued due to urbanization and development in the watershed as well as construction of the NREB. However, the sufficient field monitoring and researches for sedimentation characteristics and bed changes have not been performed after construction of the NREB. Therefore, bed elevation changes and seasonal sediment concentration distribution were analyzed using the quasi-steady state model with historical field data in this study. The water surface elevation changes with and without sediment dredging operation were calculated using the developed quasi-steady state model and finally the sediment dredging effects were evaluated.
We examined whether several reeds, which are found around Ulsan area, could be used for downflow reed-bed to remove pollutants of sewage. Three kinds of reed, such as Phagnltes auspuis, ha orientdls, and Phduis aundinacea L., were collected from their habitats near the Taehwa River in Ulsan City. In the minimized model system of dowMlow reed-bed, P.auskdls appeared to reduce BOD more than others did but s119h11y Increase total amount of nitrogen(N). When p. auspdis were placed in the sterilized water. total nitrogen was found to be signincantly increased dependent on the number of experimental plant In the sterilized state, but it was rather decreased in the non-sterilized state. With these results, nlicroorganisms attached to p.auspuis roots can be thought to work for removal of pollutants. Therefore, these microorganisms and their habitat, p. auskdis reed bed, together can be used for sewage treatment It was suggested that oxygen Is produced by photosynthesis reaction of P ecustrdis. The increased oxygen may help microorganisms in their habitats to work on the removal of pollutants.
Groynes are installed generally to protect the riverside or the river bank from the erosion caused by water flows by controlling the flow direction and velocity in rivers. In the past, groynes were used to secure enough depth of water in canals. As there has been a growing interest in river restoration and the natural river maintenance since 2000, groynes are proposed as a major environmental hydraulic structure because the flow control and various river bed conditions around the groyne can contribute to habitat functions. Groynes are typically installed in a series. In designing groyne series, groyne spacing is an important factor because the flow changes in the main canal and the flow inside the groyne area occurs variably depending on the groyne spacing. This study provide information to determine the groyne spacing suitable for the purpose of the groyne by examining the flows that variably changes according to the groyne spacing and angle in the recirculation zone of the groyne field. In particular, the formation of vortex, the location of vortex core and the water flow near the river bank, all of which occur in the recirculation zone inside the groyne area, were mainly analyzed to examine the flow characteristics near the river bank that influences the safety of the river bank area. The results of the experiment will serve as important basic data to examine changes in the river bed inside the groyne area as well as the safety of river banks following the installation of groyne series.
This study was conducted to analyze the forest environmental characteristics on a total of 20 forest environmental factors affecting the debris flow against 272 sites of risk areas. In the case of environmental factors, it showed the high risk of debris flow under the following conditions such as soil depth of less than 30cm, west slope, altitude of 200~300 m, mountain average slope of $25{\sim}30^{\circ}$, sandy loam, igneous rocks, and composite slope. Among the rainfall factors, 50~100 mm of maximum hourly rain fall and 300 mm of maximum rain fall per day have been shown the high risk of debris flow. Furthermore, the high risk of debris flow was related to the river-bed average slope of $10{\sim}20^{\circ}$, the river-bed average width of >10 m, the small amount of debris in river-bed (less than 20% of river-bed structure), the drainage density of >$1km/km^2$, the 40~60% of area with more than $20^{\circ}$ slope, and the 40~60% of areas with risk grade 2 of landslide. In addition, forest environmental factors including the driftwood, soil erosion control structures, age-class 3, crown density (density), and mixed forest were important factors causing the high risk of debris flow.
