Nitrogen efficiency for grain yield(E) and its relation to grain yield(Y), harvesting index(HI), percent translocation of nitrogen from straw to grain(T), nitrogen uptake amount(N), concentration in grain (GN%) or straw (SN%) and total dry matter yield (TY) among rice varieties (Oryza sativa, old and new varieties) were investigated at four nitrogen nutritional status (high and low fertilizer levels in high and low fertility fields) by simple correlation analysis. Relation between any two of above parameters or total dry matter yield (TY) and nitrogen efficiency for total dry matter yield (TE) was also investigated. 1. E is significantly and positively correlated with T, Y, HI but negatively with SN%, N, GN% and in negative trend with TY. 2. T is significantly and positively with GN% or Y, but negatively with SN%. 3. TE is significantly and positively correlated with TY but negatively with N. 4. The order of E among varieties showed consistency among different nitrogen nutritional environments. 5. From the above facts it was concluded that high yielding varieties have high nitrogen efficiency due to high percent translocation of nitrogen from straw to grain, subsequent low nitrogen concentration in straw and that translocated nitrogen in grain is greatly diluted with photosynthates. 6. Reported physiological characteristics of newly bred high yielding IR lines are well accordance with their high nitrogen efficiency and rice breeding was a selection on the basis of nitrogen efficiency. 7. It is postulated that high nitrogen efficiency varieties for yields have high nitrogen efficiency for root growth in early stage so that uptake more efficient soil nitrogen in later growth stage.
Some attempts were made to investigate the honeydew excretion of the brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens Stal, biotypes in terms of instal nymph, days after emergence, macropterous and brachypterous mated and unmated female, and macropterous female with different sources fed on 60-day-old rice cultivars with different resistance genes. The feeding amount of the BPH biotypes was measured by using the honeydew excretion test. The feeding amount of fifth instar on Miryang 23 with no resistance gene was higher than that of Cheon-gcheongbyeo with Bph-1 gene by two times. Macropterous and brachypterous females showed low feeding amount at first day after emergence, but they showed high feeding amount from second days after emergence. Also the feeding amount of brachypterous female was higher than that of macropterous female. In addition, the feeding amount of BPH was in the order of nymph
Though it has been widely known the nitrogen effects are influenced by soils, varieties, and mineral nutrients in the rice culture, few analyses in relation to the factors increasing nitrogen effect have been studied in Korea. The effects of potassium and silica on the factors increasing nitrogen effects in paddy soils were investigated in accordance with soil improvement practices and nitrogen application methods for the cultivated varieties. The results obtained are as follows. 1. For 413 paddy fields, the yield from soils without nitrogen application ranged from 200 to 850kg/10a and that from nitrogen application did 350 to 1,051kg/10a. The yield increament by nitrogen application varied 50 to 650kg/10a depending on soils. 2. Soil chemical characteristics for high yield were different between with nitrogen and without nitrogen application. In the without nitrogen application, however, contents of organic matter, phosphorous, potassium and calcium of high yield soils were lower than those of low yield, while the available silica content was higher in the former. 3. The yield increased with nitrogen application up to 22.4kg/10a and thereafter it decreased. These phenomena were supposed to be not be decrease of nitrogen uptake but by lowered silica uptake. 4. Clay soil incorporation, deep plough, and inorganic constituents control such as Ca, Mg, and $Sio_2$ were effective as soil improvement praitices. It was appeared that increases of silica content and Ca/Mg ratio were important to increase nitrogen effects. 5. For the correlation between yield and yield components, it was high between yield and panicle in low nitrogen level and so was it between grain yield and ripening rate in high nitrogen. 6. In the urea and super granule urea application plot, recovery rate of nitrogen by plant and soil was high and yield was remarkable high. 7. Regardless of fertilizer types such as ammonium sulfate and urea, the residual nitrogen was about 4kg/10a in both plots of 5.8 and 11.6kg/10a. N applied. 8. The potassium application to soil enhanced the nitrogen efficiency. It was more effective in low potassium soil. 9. Optimum pH value for gel formation in the 4% sodium silicate solution was approximately 6.6. 10. It was suggested that silica could affect to rice plant growth as the inorganic and organic chemical components.
Rice bakanae disease caused by Fusarium fujikuroi is one of the most serious rice diseases in Korea. From 2006 to 2009, 118 F. fujikuroi isolates were collected from various regions of rice fields in Korea. Resistance assay of 118 F. fujikuroi isolates to prochloraz, tebuconazole, and benomyl, were performed using agar dilution method. To investigate inhibitory effects of the fungicides, minimum inhibitory concentration of mycelial growth (MIC) and effective concentration inhibiting mycelial growth by 50% ($EC_{50}$) for 118 isolates were calculated using Sigmaplot 8.02 (Antro, SPSS UK, Ltd). Based on the means of $EC_{50}$ values, baseline resistance values were determined as $0.5{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ for prochloraz, $5.0{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ for tebuconazole and $2.5{\mu}g{\cdot}mL^{-1}$ for benomyl. Number of resistant isolates to each fungicide was 17, 19 and 43 for prochloraz, tebuconazole and benomyl, respectively. Furthermore, 4 isolates showed the double resistance to both prochloraz and tebuconazole, 6 isolates to prochloraz and benomyl, and 11 isolates to tebuconazole and benomyl. Isolates CF366 and LF335 isolated from Gyeongbuk province were resistant to the three fungicides tested, prochloraz, tebuconazole and benomyl.

Rate of conventional allpication of chemical fertilizer and farm manure were surveyed for 23 crops and 13,259 farms on paddy and upland fields in 1992. 1. Farmers have applied fertilizers more than optimum levels on vagetable crops. Based on the optimum levels of N, P and K, the excess ratios of N, P, K fertilization were 40%, 138%, and 53% in vagetable crops and 38%, 7%, and 0% in field crops, respectively. 2. Among provinces, the fertilizer application for paddy rice was higher in Chung-nam and Jeon-buk, which have had higher yield compared to other provinces. And that for red pepper was higher in Kang-won, Jeon-nam, Jeon-buk, Kyeong-nam, Kyeong-buk, and for chinese cabbage in Kang-won and Chung-nam. 3. The fertilizers rates at a chief producing districts of crops(CPD) were higher in vagetable crops than in field crops. 4. Compared with total fertilizer levels of open culture, excess fertilizers in plastic house were 5.9kg/10a(21%) of nitrogen, 8.7kg/10a(52%) of phosphorus and 7.1kg/10a(34%) of potasium. In chemical fertilizer application, fertilizer levels of sweet corn, red papper, tomato and lettuce were higher in plastic house, while those of cucumber, strawberry, radish, chinese cabbage were higher in open culture. 5. Ratio of farmers who applied farm manures was below 60 % on field crops and 69~100% on vagetable crops. 6. The compound fertilizer for paddy rice(21-17-17) was applied on all the crops and its application rate was the highest in all the crops except for paddy rice(single cropping), malting barley, soybean, sesame.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the actual outbreak status of rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) disease in forage corn for securing the basic data to control of the disease all over the country from 2006 to 2007. Outbreak of the disease showed a wide difference according to regions and was severe in Icheon, Gochang, Kimje, Youngkwang, Kimchun, Youngju, Cheonan, and Boroung provinces in Korea. Outbreak rate of the disease was effected by planting time of forage corn. Disease rate was lower in corns planted from Apr. 26 to May 15 than in those of planted from April 10 to 25 or after May 31. The corn fields planted from April 26 to May 15 showed lower disease rate than that of planted from April 10 to 25 or after May 31. Also the outbreak rate of the disease was some difference according to corn varieties but was not genuinely resistant varieties to RBSDV. Dry matter yield of forage corn was significantly decreased depending on disease rate, and was highly negative correlation to disease rate. The forage corn infected with RBSDV was lower 3.2%, 3.6% and 12% in IVDMD, TDN, and RFV, and higher 3.7% and 4.5% in NDF and ADF than those of the healthy plant, respectively.
Weed control in mid season of rice fields was systemized earlier in Korea than in Western Europe or China. The most representative method was pull out the weeds by hand followed by 'Seojibeob'(鋤地法 : method of hoeing) after draining. It was practiced 3 to 4 times to do extensively. Also, the purposes of transplanting arid direct seeding in rows were to manage weed problems effectively, which means that the development of cultural techniques is closely related to 'Seojibeob'(鋤地法). From the 17th century, techniques of deep plowing(because of principal : 'Simkyonginu'(深耨易耕 : Deep plowing make easy to hoe) and 'Hwanubeob'(火耨法 : derived from 'Hwakyong soonubeob) for effective weed management of waste lands were newly adopted and spreaded due to the situations ant that time. Thus, the practice of large-scale farming resulted from the adaptation of the techniques and methods described above. In the 18th to 19th century, the cultural methods, not much different from 'Seojibeob', were changed and the number of weeding was decreased. Especially, the techniques of dry seeding of rice were practiced by originating the ideal 'Seojibeob', in which water availability was improved in northern drought areas and also weed problems were easily managed. In addition, intensively large-scale farming showed weed management problems, so that 'Cheonilrok'(千一錄) by Woo Ha-young described the techniques of 'Banjongbeob'(反種法) or 'Hwanubeob' and in the end of the Chosun dynasty extensively large-scale farming was practiced by putting intensive and extensive techniques together. As the results, agricuitural productivity of Korea was increased 5 times by that time.

Experiment was conducted to establish the weed control system on the paddy fields by investigating species, period and amount of weeds in Gangwon province. Four locations were selected for these experiments : West plain area, Chunchon(74m above the sea level), mid-mountainous area, Hongchon(300 m), high alpine area, Hoengsong(450m), and east sea area, Myungju(14m). Weed emergence was investigated 6 times from 10 days after transplanting to 60 days with 10 days interval. From the experiments stated above, the results were summarized as follows ; The identity of weed species was small in grass family, but broad-leaf family was numerous. Also the dominant weed species was generally the perenial weeds. The weed emergence was initiated from 10 days after translanting. The amounts of weed counted the most in Chunchon. A large number of weeds were emerged between 30-60 days after transplanting in Chunchon and between 40-60 days after transplanting in Hongchon and Hoengsong. Among agronomic characteristics affected by weed emergence during rice development, plant height was decreased by 2~4cm, panicle number by 1.3~2.9, spikelet by 3.7~7.5, ripening rates 3.3~6.5%, and milled yield by 12~17%, respectively.
3D QSAR studies for protox inhibition activities against root and shoot of the rice plant (Orysa sativa L.) and barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) by a series of new 1-(5-methyl-3-phenylisoxazolin-5-yl)methoxy-2-chloro-4-fluorobenzene derivatives were conducted based on the results (Sung, N. D. et al.'s, (2004) J. Korean Soc. Appl. Biol. Chem. 47(3), 351-356) using comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methodology. Four CoMSIA models, without hydrogen bond donor field for the protox inhibition activities against root and shoot of the two plants, were derived from the combination of several fields using steric field, hydrophobic field, hydrogen bond acceptor field, LUMO molecular orbital field, dipole moment (DM) and molar refractivity (MR) as additional descriptors. The predictabilities and fitness of CoMSIA models for protox inhibition activities against barnyard-grass were higher than that of rice plant. The statistical results of these models showed the best predictability of the protox inhibition activities against barnyard-grass based on the cross-validated value $r^2\;_{cv}\;(q^2=0.635{\sim}0.924)$, non cross-validated, conventional coefficient $r^2\;_{ncv.}$ value $(r^2=0.928{\sim}0.977)$ and PRESS value $(0.255{\sim}0.273)$. The protox inhibition activities exhibited a strong correlation with the steric $(5.4{\sim}15.7%)$ and hydrophobic $(68.0{\sim}84.3%)$ factors of the molecules. Particularly, the CoMSIA models indicated that the groups of increasing steric bulk at ortho-position on the C-phenyl ring will enhance the protox inhibition activities against barnyard-grass and subsequently increase the selectivity.
These experiments were performed to investigate the effects of sublethal doses of fungicides (validamycin A 3 Sp and neoasozin 6.5 Lq) and insecticides (diazinon 34Ec and decamethrin 1Ec) on the possible ways to the resurgence of brown planthoppers (BPH) (Nilaparvata lugens $St{\aa}l$). The possible factors tested in this experiment were fecundity of BPH, longevity, egg-hatchability, amount of honeydew excreted, population build-up following the pesticide treatments in the next generation, and hopperburn rate of potted rice plants. Among the insecticides tested, the applications of diazinon and decamethrin in rice fields may induce the BPH resurgence and accelerate the hopperburn of rice plants through stimulating the fecundity, increasing the adult longevity, promoting the feeding activity and causing the positve population build-up of the BPH
