These experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of seed coating with ten environmentally acceptable polymers, on germination percentage, water uptake, respiration, emergence and seedling growth characteristics. The water absorption of polymer-coated seeds in saturation condition was highest in klucel and lowest in polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP), and that in water was highest in klucel and lowest in maltrin. Respiration rates of polymer-coated seeds in Hwayoungbyeo and Ilpumbyeo were lower than those of none-coated seeds, and those in Daecheongbyeo and Jinmibyeo were higher than that of none-coated seeds, and those of sepiret coated seeds were higher than PVP coated seeds. The germination polimer-coated seed was reduced by one percentage by coating with seed coating machine. Germination percentage was not affected by any of polymer coating in high quality seed, but there were significant effects in low quality seed coating with waterlock, surelease 46 and sepiret significantly reduced germination some cultivars. Germination percentage after accelated ageing treatment were slightly higher most of polymer-coated seeds than in none-coated seeds, but those of sepiret-and klucel-coated seeds were lower significantly. Germination percentage of seeds coated with daran 8600, rnaltrin, sacrust and opadry were enhanced slightly under cold test other polimers reduced germination. The seedling height of polymer-coated seeds were longer than those of none-coated seeds, but those of waterlock, PVP and maltrin coating seeds were shorter, seedling hight was shortened by polimer coating under cold test. Polymer-coated seeds showed higher emergence percentage, shorter emergence time in field condition. The highest emergence percentage and the shortest emergence time was shown at 90% soil moisture content.
In order to trace the survival route of weedy rice in Korean farmer's field, occurrence rate and position of weedy rice, number of weedy rice plants per $m^2$, in transplanted and direct seeded field were investigated. The highest occurrence rate of weedy rice in transplanted field was 5.5%. Number of weedy rice plants in direct seeded field was higher than that in transplanted field. In transplanted field, most of the weedy rice were grown within hills of cultivated rice and only a few was grown between hills of the cultivated rice, however in direct seeded field the number of weedy rice occurred between hills or rows of cultivated rice was higher than that occurred within hills or rows. Weedy rice occurrence rate in the field of .non-recommended rice variety was higher than that in the field of recommended variety. The main survival route of weedy rice in transplanted field was supposed to be mixture of weedy rice seeds with cultivated rice, and that in direct seeded field to be natural survival.
F. roseum "Graminearum" and F. moniliforme were isolated from hulls of seeds collected from fields. F. roseum "Graminearum" was isolated from brown rice of all the varieties tested. F. moniliforme was isolated from Nagdongbyeo, Seomjinbyeo, Sinsunchalbyeo, Milyang 23, Baegyangbyeo and Samnambyeo. F. moniliforme was isolated from the most of the seeds damaged by sparrow and it formed sporodochia of this fungus. Five species including F. moniliforme were isolated from plant hopper collected from paddy fields in September. To select seed a disinfectant, twelve fungicides were tested and P242 was one of the best effective fungicidetested. After seed treatment with the fungicide, F. moniliforme was not isolated from hulls but was frequently isolated from brown rices.
1) For the micro-analysis of mercury in plant materials, the method of Furutani was shown to be the simplest and most efficient way and the recovery of the assay was about 98%. 2) When the rice grain was soaked in 1/1000 diluted solution of organo-mercury fungicide for 8 hours at the end of March, the amounts of mercury residues in the brown rice and unhulled rice were 8.8 to $9.5\;{\mu}g/g$ seeds and 10.1 to $10.7\;{\mu}g/g$ seeds, respectively. 3) By washing the treated rice seeds with running water for three days, tile residual mercury concentration was reduced to 1/4 to 1/5; thus the mercury residues were 1.86 to $1.92\;{\mu}g/g$ for brown rice and 1.96 to $2.93\;{\mu}g/g$ for unhulled rice. 4) The residual mercury was present more in the unhulled rice than in the brown rice, either before or after washing of the treated seeds. 5) Among the different rice varieties, no difference was observed in mercury residues by seed treatment and washing.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of pre-germination soaking on germination in 90 Korean soybean varieties and identification of protein in seeds of 7 soybean varieties. The results obtained that germination rate of soybean seeds was decreased as amount of soaking water and soaking duration in number of days. Difference in germination rate of soybean seeds was significant at three days soaking with water volume of 90 ml. Water absorption of seeds was rapidly increased during the first 6 hours, followed by slow increase until 24 hours and then decreased 24 to 48 hours after soaking soybean varieties for bean sprout soaked the lowest amount of water, while soybean varieties for cooking with rice showed the lowest seed water content. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in soaking water was rapidly decreased during the first 3 hours after soaking, and then slowly decreased. Soybean varieties for vegetable and early maturity showed the lowest DO during early soaking periods, but showed higher DO after 24 hours than other groups of soybean varieties. Electrical conductivity and Total Dissolved Solid (TDS) were increased as number of soaking days increased. Soybean varieties for vegetable and early maturity showed the highest electrical conductivity and TDS, followed by those for sauce and paste or cooking with rice, while showed the lowest electrical conductivity and TDS, varieties for bean sprout. Among 90 Korean soybean varieties, varieties which showed the highest germination rate were Jangsu-kong for sauce and paste, Sobaegnamul-kong for bean sprout, Seonheuk-kong for cooking with rice, Seunnokkong for vegetable and early maturity. On the ather hand varieties which showed the lowest germination rate were Iksan and Songhak-kong for sauce and paste, Pangsa-kong for bean sprout, Jinyeul-kong for cooking with rice, Sinlok-kong for vegetable and early maturity. Germination rates of soybean seeds were higher when electrical conductivity, TDS and water absorption of seeds were lower. There were negative correlations between electrical conductivity, TDS and water absorption of seeds and germination rate, while there were positive correlations among electrical conductivity, TDS and soybean seed weight.
Direct Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method that combines biological and enzymatic amplification of PCR targets was developed for the detection of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines on soybeen seeds without DNA isolation. Primers Xag F1 and Xag R1 were designed to specifically amplify a 401 bp fragment of the glycinecin A gene of X axonopodis pv. glycines. Xag F1 and Xag R1 were used to carry out the PCR analysis with genomic DNA from 45 different bacterial strains including phylogenetically related bacteria with X axonopodis pv. glycines, and other bacterial strains of different genus and species. The PCR assay using this set of primers were able to detect X axonopodis pv. glycines with DNA concentration as low as 200 fg and $1.8{\times}10^3$ cfu/ml. The Xag was detected from the seed samples incubated for 2 hrs with shaking and the intensity of the band was increase with the incubation time of seeds. The Direct PCR assay method without DNA isolation makes detection of X. axonopodis pv. glycines on soybean seeds easier and more sensitive than other conventional methods. The developed seed assay using direct PCR method will be useful for the specific detection of X. axonopodis pv. glycines in soybean seed samples.
Twenty-four cultivars of colored rice seeds were collected inside and outside Korea, and the antioxidant and antimutagenic activity was determined for the solvent-fractionated layers of their bran parts lipid soluble fraction, pigment containing fraction, and pigment component per se. As the serial organic solvent extraction proceeded, the overall tendency of antioxidant activities declined with increased chemical homogeneity of each fraction. This markedly showed the low antioxidativities of the pigment components from LK 1-3-6-12-1-1 and Gillimhukmi. Even all the colored rice cultivars, with considerable antimutagenic activity in 70% ethanolic extract, exhibited mutagenicity when measured with its pigment containing fraction (wx 124-163-45-7-1-1-1 and LKlB-2-1-1 being the strongest). The pigment content in each colored rice seeds decreased in the order of IR 17491-5-4-3-3>LK 1-3-6-12-1-1>LK 1D-2-12-1>RGS No.336, Elwee. In addition, a substantial difference in both chemical composition of the constituents and its amount could be found between the colored rice and cooking rice cultivars. This revealed that, compared to cooking rice, major components of organic solvent fractions from colored rice probably have long hydrocarbon chain moieties.

In order to develop effective control methods for Bakanae disease caused by Gibberella fujikuroi (Saito) Ito during rearing of rice seedlings, we investigated the disease resistance of 15 rice varieties to G. fujikuroi and control effect of six seed disinfectants, and tried to improve the using methods of the seed disinfectants. Disease resistance was tested by investigating the disease incidence on each rice cultivar grown in rice seedling box infested with or not infested with G. fujikuroi at 30 days after sowing seeds and 20 days after heading date. The results showed that Hwayongbyeo, Dongjinbyeo, Hwoanbyeo, Nonghobyeo, Nampyeongbyeo, and Hwojinbyeo were resistant G. fujikuroi, meanwhile Keulubyeo, Sobibyeo, Odaebyeo, Junambyeo, Samchonebyeo, Sangjubyeo, and Hwabongbyeo were susceptible. Three seed disinfectants, prochloraz, fludioxonil, and carproamid + thiram + fludioxonil controlled Bakanae disease of rice very well, while bonomyl + thiram, thiophanate-methyl + thiram and thiophanate-methyl + triflumizole did not suppress the disease enough. Water temperature was turned to be an important factor for controlling the disease by treating seed disinfectants. Prochloraz showed 61% control value on the disease at $10^{\circ}C$, but it showed above 95% control value at the range of $30-35^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the control effect of seed disinfectants increased with increasing water temperature. Meanwhile soaking period of rice seeds in the suspension of seed disinfectants and chemical dosage had no high relation to control the disease. This results suggest that rice varieties, water temperature, and optimal selection of suitable seed disinfectants are very important to control Bakanae disease effectively.
In order to identify the physiological maturity and to determine the proper time of harvesting as fresh seed for cooking with rice and germination ability according to the harvesting time in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp), this experiment was conducted. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The length and width of pods became maximum size on 10 days after flowering(DAF) and thickness of them increased to 14 DAF and then decreased to 18 DAF. 2. The weight of pod wall reached the maximum on 14 DAF, the thickness of them increased to 8 DAF and decreased to 18 DAF and it was stabilized. 3. The length and thickness of the seeds became larger to 10 DAF, were not changed from 10 DAF to 16 DAF and then decreased after 16 DAF. 4. The seeds coloured 2 days earlier than the pod wall on 8 DAF and the grade increased by degrees to 16 DAF. 5. The moisture content of seeds and pod wall started to decrease on 8 DAF and the moisture content of pod wall was higher than that of seeds in the middle stage but the condition changed after 18 DAF. 6. When the weight of seeds reached the maximum on 16 DAF, the moisture content of them was 54.5%. 7. The content of total nitrogen, phosphate and oil decreased but the carbohydrate increased by degrees along the passing of DAF. The silicic acid did not exist and K$_2$O, CaO, MgO, protein etc. existed but did not show regular tendency. 8. The physiological maturity was 16 DAF and the proper time of harvesting as fresh seed for cooking with rice was 12 DAF to 16 DAF. 9. Germination was possible after 10 DAF but we could get the normal roots from the seeds harvested after 14 DAF.

This study was conducted in order to examine relationships between the viviparous germination ability and the antioxidative system in rice seeds and seedlings. Enzyme activities was compared among the four varieties with different viviparous germination ability from the early or mid-late maturity group. $\alpha$-Amylase activities correlated with the viviparous germination rate (VGRs) and $\alpha$-amylase activity in seeds of 40 days after heading (DAH) was highest in Dongjinbyeo among midlate maturing varieties (MLMVs) and in Daeseongbyeo among EMVs. $\alpha$-Amylase activity in dry mature seeds was also higher in varieties with higher VGR. Glucose contents in viviparously germinating seeds and mature dry, seeds were higher in varieties with higher VGRs. Cat-alase activities did not correlate with the VGRs in both maturity groups. However, peroxidase activities in viviparously germinating seeds were higher in varieties with higher VGRs.
