  • In comparison with other terrestrial ecosystems, rice paddies are unique because they provide the primary food source for over 50% of the world's population, and act as major sources of global methane. The present paper summerizes a long-term field study that combine carbon isotopes, and canopy-scale flux measurements in an irrigated rice paddy, in conjugation with continuous monitoring of environmental, and vegetational factors. Both $CO_2$, and methane fluxes were largely influenced by soil temperature, and moisture conditions, especially across drainage events. Soil-entrapped $CO_2$, and methane showed a gradually increasing trend throughout growing season, but rapidly decreased upon flood water drainage. These variations in flux were well correlated with changes in concentration, and isotope ratio of soil $CO_2$, and methane, and of atmospheric $CO_2$, and methane within, and above the canopy. The isotopic signature of the gas exchange process varied markedly in response to change in contribution of soil respiration, belowground storage, fraction of $CO_2$ recycled, magnitude, and direction of $CO_2$ exchange, transport mechanism, and fraction of methane oxidized. Our results clearly demonstrate that stable isotope analysis can be a useful tool to study underlying mechanisms of gas exchange processes under natural conditions.

  • The proposed hypothesis that the effects of climatic factors during ripening period (from 10 days before heading to 30 days after heading) on ripened grain ratio are equal on the level of canopy and on the level of tiller in that canopy of rice plant appeared to be agreeable. The followings were found according to the analysis of ripening structure at tiller level. 1. The optimum ripening temperature (mean air temperature during ripening period) was $21^{\circ}C$ for Jinheung and $22^{\circ}C$ for IR667-Suwon 214. 2. The minimum mean solar radiation ($cal\;cm^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) of ripening period was not greater than 240 for Jinheung and greater than 270 for IR 667-Suwon 214. 3. The ripened grain ratio was not different from main culm to first tillers of second order of main culm in Jinheung but greatly decreased from 4th tiller of first order of main culm in IR667 and the number of grain per main culm was greater in IR667 than in Jinheung indicating that yield of IR667 could be increased by increasing the number of main culm. 4. The last heading date insuring optimum ripening period appeared to be 25th in August for Jinheung and 30th in August for IR667 in Suweon.

  • To find out the influence of different rice varieties on the emission of methane in the soil and the exudation of carbohydrates from root, the experiment was conducted on a fine silty, mesic family of Aeric Fluventinc Haplaquepts (Jeonbug series). The varities of rise involved one early maturing variety of Japonica type(namweon) and three mid-to-late maturing varieties of Japonica type and one mid-to-late variety of Indica${\times}$Japonica crossed. The methane flux over the rice canopy was measured according to the closed chamber method modified by Shin and the methane concentration in the soil was measured using porous cup installed in the soil. The carbohydrate exudates from root were measured under nutrient solution culture. It was found that the methane flux tended to be lower in early maturing varieties than in the mid-to-late maturing varieties, lower in indica${\times}$Japonica crossed variety than in Japonica type varieties. There was positive correlation between the number of tillers and the weight of roots of rice plant and methane flux. The correlation, however, tended to be greater between the weight of roots and methane flux. There was no significant difference in the concentration of methane in the soil under different varieties of rice, excepting one variety, Kehwa under which methane concentration was highest. In case of carbohydrate exudation, early maturing variety tended to be higher than other varieties, although the opposite was the case in methane flux.

  • Knowledge for reflectance characteristic of interesting targets will provide us with actual application of remote sensing on agriculture. In this study, we have measured and analyzed reflectivity characteristics based on growing status from transplanting time to harvesting time. Rice paddies transplant into 3 fields at 20, May, 1999. Measurement of reflectivity characteristics were carried out with a portable spectroradiometer for frequencies from 300nm to 1100nm during the time period from 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM of clear sky and calm a day. The measurements for a day repeated 3 times(also, 3 times to each measurement)for reliable values. In result, we found that averaged reflectivity of visible range has about 2.34% - 2.55% in blue region(400nm-498nm), about 5.05% - 6.01% in green region(500nm-598nm) and about 4.21% - 5.24% in red region(600nm-698nm). It must be noted that the more rice canopy grows, the more spectral reflectivity decreases in visible region. Also, we separated infrared region into two cases - One case is increasing region with 700nm-780nm, the other is fixed region with 800nm-1100nm. Averaged reflectivity of these regions has about 22.3% - 23.0% in increasing region, about 29.4% - 33.1% in fixed region. It must be noted that more rice canopy grows, the more spectral reflectivity also increases up to 23, Aug. in infrared region. After 23, Aug, the reflectivity has a tendency toward decrease.

  • In this paper, a model for simulating synthetic aperture radar(SAR) images of earth surfaces. The earth surfaces include forest area, rice crop field, other agricultural fields, grass field, road, and water surface. At first, the backscattering models are developed for bare soil surfaces, water surfaces, short vegetation fields such as rice fields and grass field, other agriculture areas, and forest areas. Then, the SAR images are generated from the digital elevation model(DEM) and digital terrain map. The DTM includes ten parameters, such as soil moisture, surface roughness, canopy height, leaf width, leaf length, leaf density, branch length, branch density, trunk length, and trunk density, if applicable. The scattering models are verified with measurements, and applied to generate an SAR image for an area.

  • This experiment was conducted to establish the cultural practice for reduction of lodging by the effective water management under direct seeding on flooded paddy surface as treated by the drainage times using Dongjinbyeo at National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station during 1994-1995. As the increased midsummer drainage times, the field lodging were reduced by reduction of culm length and large amounts of root with favorable distribution in deep soil, indicating low canopy architecture could promote the light transmission in the plants and favorable root growth. The yield performance was high by increased drainage times which contributed to mainly percentage of ripened grain and 1, 000-grain weight. As a result, two to three times midsummer drainage as effective water management during plant growth was desirable.

  • This study was conducted to get basic information of dry matter production and agronomic characteristics for increasing grain ripening in rice cultivar with large grains. Three cultivars which have different grain size were used. Of the two large grain cultivars, SR7796-3-1-5-1-l(SR7796F$_{7}$) had long culm and SR11269-13-3-4-2(SR11269F$_{6}$) had short culm. On the other hand, Tamjinbyeo was recommended cultivar had medium size of grain and culm. LAI was highest in Tamjinbyeo, followed by the SR11269F$_{6}$ and SR7796F$_{7}$, LAI decrement was higher in large grain cultivars than that of Tamjinbyeo after 20days after heading. Total dry weight(TDW) of areal part was highest in SR11269F$_{6}$, followed by the Tamjinbyeo and SR7796F$_{7}$. Dry weight (DW) of stem (leaf sheath+culm) at harvesting stage was decreased 15%, 12% in Tamjinbyeo, SR11269F$_{6}$, respectively, but was increased 5% in SR7796F$_{7}$ compared to heading stage. In distribution rate of each organ to TDW, distribution rate of leaf blade was low in large grain cultivar, but that of stem in Tamjinbyeo, SR7796F$_{7}$ and SR11269F$_{6}$ was 36%, 38% and 42%, respectively. In canopy architecture leaf blade weight was the highest 30~40cm, 40~50cm and 70~8Ocm above the ground in SR11269F$_{6}$, Tamjinbyeo and SR7796F$_{7}$, respectively. Range of panicle distribution in the canopy was 40cm in Tamjinbyeo, and was 70cm in large-grain cultivars. The results suggest that it has to take a growing interest in developing culture method for increasing LAI during growth stage, especially, around heading, in keeping green leaf till ripening stage and also in growing unformly plant within rice hill in large grain cultivars.cultivars.ltivars.

  • Ground-based remote sensing can be used as one of the non-destructive, fast, and real-time diagnostic tools for quantifying yield, biomass, and nitrogen (N) stress during growing season. This study was conducted to assess biomass and nitrogen (N) status of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants under N stress using passive and active ground-based remote sensors. Nitrogen application rates were 0, 70, 100, and 130 kg N $ha^{-1}$. At each growth stage, reflectance indices measured with active sensor showed higher correlation with DW, N uptake and N concentration than those with the passive sensor. NIR/Red and NIR/Amber indices measured with Crop Circle active sensors generally had a better correlation with dry weight (DW), N uptake and N content than vegetation indices from Crop Circle passive sensor and NDVIs from active sensors. Especially NIR/Red and NIR/amber ratios at the panicle initiation stage were most closely correlated with DW, N content, and N uptake. Rice grain yield, DW, N content and N uptake at harvest were highly positively correlated with canopy reflectance indices measured with active sensors at all sampling dates. N application rate explains about 91~92% of the variability in the SI calculated from NIR/Red or NIR/Amber indices measured with Crop Circle active sensors on 12 July. Therefore, the in-season sufficiency index (SI) by NIR/Red or NIR/Amber index from Crop Circle active sensors can be used for determination of N application rate.

  • 'Migwang' is a new japonica rice variety developed from a cross between SR15926-10-2-3-3-3 having a good canopy architecture and multiple disease resistance, and Iksan431 having a translucent milled rice and good eating-quality with a view of developing a new variety having multiple disease resistance by the rice breeding team at NICS, RDA in 2009. The heading date of this variety is August 15 and later than check variety, Hwaseongbyeo, by four days. 'Migwang' has 75 cm of culm length and 98 spikelets per panicle. This variety showed longer heading delay and higher spikelet sterility than those of Hwaseongbyeo while exposed to cold stress. This variety showed resistance to blast disease and bacterial leaf blight, but susceptible to rice stripe virus and planthoppers. The milled rice of this variety exhibits translucent, clear non-glutinous endosperm and short grain shape. 'Migwang' has better palatability index of cooked rice than that of Hwaseongbyeo. The whole grain rate of milled rice and milled rice recovery of 'Migwang' are higher than those of Hwaseongbyeo as 96.8% and 73.1%, respectively. 'Migwang' has 5.5 MT/ha in milled rice. 'Migwang' could be adaptable to the middle plain area, mid-western and southeastern costal areas and mid-mountainous areas in Korea.

  • This study was investigated the possibility of measuring chlorophyll in paddy crops using two kinds of chlorophyll meters(SPAD-502, Field Scout). The results of correlation analysis showed the 0.7758(r$^2$) relationship between the chlorophyll contents of paddy leaves measured by SPAD and spectrophotometer. It indicates that chlorophyll content in paddy crops could be measured using the SPAD. Considering the data of the SPAD and Field Scout there was significant difference between their chlorophyll contents measured by the SPAD and Field Scout. Likewise, such results were consistent with the corrected data using light intensity. According to the results, it can be concluded that it is difficult to describe the rice chlorophyll measured by the Field Scout more accurately than the SPAD when using one standard spectrum and another spectrum for reflectance measuring. The chlorophyll variance measured at a research institute and a farmer's field revealed that the output of SPAD was more reliable than that of the Field Scout.
