Finding a means to discriminate the commercial herb medicines when they were dried and sliced is a very important and imminent project in Korea. To differentiate plant origins and the commercial herb medicines of Atractylodes japonica and A. macrocephala, two discriminative methods using anatomical characteristics and SCAR marker were applied. It was possible to discriminate plant origins and the commercial herb medicines between A. japonica and A. macrocephala by anatomical characteristics: development of periderm, layer of stone cell, distribution of laticiferous vessels, development of xylem fiber in xylem ray, contained quantity of clustered crystals and others. While, two SCAR markers were developed from RAPD clones: SAjR2 (600 bp) from AjR2 and SAmR1 (1,200 bp) from AmR1. These two markers were enough for discrimination plant origins and the commercial herb medicines between A. japonica and A. macrocephala. The result of application of anatomical characteristics and SCAR markers to investigate current status in domestic herb market, Daegu and Kumsan herb market, it was identified to be current herb medicines of A japonica.

Four different mashes using traditional methods in Korea such as Andong soju, Moonbaeju, Leekangju and Jindo hongju, were prepared for distilled liquor. The changes of pH, total acid, reducing sugar, total sugar, alcohol, solid content and ${\beta}-amylase$ activities in their mashes were studied during fermentation. Ethanol content of mashes were increased to the range of $8.8{\sim}11.2%$ after 16 days of fermentation. The group which was brewed by the first addition of mash showed higher ethanol content than the other group which was not added the ones. Total acid content of mashes increased to $0.59{\sim}1.10%$. The total sugar content was decreased to $6.70{\sim}8.94%$, and that of Leekangju type was lower than that of other fermented mashes. Reducing sugar content was in the range of $0.62{\sim}6.42%$ at the initial fermentation and decreased to $0.09{\sim}0.30%$ after 16 days of fermentation. Soju was obtained by distillation of each fermented mashes using the modified traditional Togori. After distillation of mashes, pH was increased and total acid was reduced. Sugar(3.58%) and solid(1.17%) in Leekangju were found to be leached from the mixture of pear, ginger, cinnamon, honey and curcuma rhizome.
The optimum culture conditions for tropane alkaloid production in hairy root cultures of Korea native Scopolia paviflora Nak. were investigated. Hairy root was induced from the rhizome of the mother plant on B5 medium containing 1.0 mg/L IBA. Among the culture media examined, 1/2 B5 medium was the best for tropane alkaloid production, whereas the growth of hairy root increased in SH medium. The best result on the growth of hairy root was obtained in 1.0 mg/L NAA, and tropane alkaloid production was obtained in plant growth regulator-free medium. Of the carbone sources tested, 3% sucrose promoted the growth of hairy root, whereas 5% sucrose increased tropane alkaloid production. Optimum inoculum densities for root growth and tropane alkaloid production were 0.5 g and 1 g, respectively. The addition of XAD resins (1 % w/v) to hairy root cultures led to increases in tropans alkaloid production, and the release of alkaloid into the medium and its adsorption by the resin accounted for about 50 to 80% of total production. It is concluded that optimized culture conditions and the addition of XAD resins could be used in the development of a bioprocess for tropane alkaloid production in hairy root cultures of S. paviflora Nak.
In the browning reaction of Korean ginseng, it appears that enzymatic and non-enzymatic browning reaction occurred In initial stage of steaming fresh ginseng at low temperature, and then non-enzymatic browning reaction followed in the drying period after steaming. Browning reaction of red ginseng occurred between $60{\sim}90$ min of steaming at $100^{\circ}C$, and browning pigments of red ginseng were mostly water soluble substances. The structural characteristics of water soluble browning reaction products(WS-BRPs) isolated from Korean red ginseng were showed the presence of hydroxyl, amide carbonyl and aliphatic methane groups. From sugar analysis it was identified that L and S-1, melanoidins isolated from red ginseng, contained two kinds of sugars, glucose and xylose, and the other melanoidin S-2 contained the previous and fructose. In order to find out pertinent methods for the acceleration of browning during ginseng processing, various treatment were made on fresh ginseng with sugars, amino acids and inorganic nitrogenous compounds and the extent of browning was measured. Among sugar tested, maltose resulted in the greatest acceleration of browning followed in decreasing order by glucose and lactose, whereas pentoses, fructose, sucrose and raffinose had negligible effect. A marked browning occurred in ginseng treated with basic amino acids, while the extent of browning was not greatly increased when ginseng was treated with aliphatic amino acids, hydroxyl amino acids, or acidic amino acids. The brown color intensity gradually increased with an increase of glucose concentration far up to 0.5M. L, S-1, and S-2 were found to have an ability to donate hydrogen to DPPH, and also they had anti-oxidative activity in the experiments of hydrogen peroxide scavenging, inhibitory activity in the formation of MDA from linoleic acid, auto oxidation of ok-brain homogenates, lipid peroxidation by the enzymatic and non-enzymatic system in liver microsome fraction, and mitochondrial fraction etc. The amounts of acidic polysaccharide(AP) in red ginseng were higher than those of wild and cultured Panax quinquefolius, Panax notoginseng as well as white ginseng (Panax ginseng). In white ginseng, the AP amount is no difference in root ages or sizes, also, the AP amount of ginseng body was similar to that of rhizome, but was higher than that of leaf and epidermis. Addition of red ginseng acidic polysaccharide(RGAP) increased production of nitric oxide(NO) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-$\alpha$ in the rodent macrophage cultures, and treatment of RGAP in vivo stimulated tumoricidal activities of natural killer (NK) cells.
The biological activities of Smilax china L. rhizome (SCR), hot water (SCRW) and 70% ethanol extract (SCRE) were analyzed. The total phenolic contents of SCRW and SCRE were 51.7 and 100.5 mg/g, respectively. The measured flavonoid content of SCRW ($67.7{\mu}g/g$) was almost double that of SCRE ($31.7{\mu}g/g$). SCRE ($IC_{50}=42.4{\mu}g/mL$) exhibited stronger antioxidant activity in the DPPH system than the positive control ${\alpha}$-tocopherol ($71.3{\mu}g/mL$) or butylated hydroxy anisole ($53.8{\mu}g/mL$) did. SCRE ($IC_{50}=50.3{\mu}g/mL$) also showed stronger ABTS radical scavenging activity, as did ${\alpha}$-tocopherol ($67.1{\mu}g/mL$). The SOD-like activity and Tyrosinase inhibition activity of SCRW and SCRE showed almost the same pattern. The best SOD-like activity and tyrosinase inhibition activity were measured as 24.9% and 20.3% in SCRW at $1,000{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The cytotoxic effects of the SCR extracts were analyzed via MTT assay on human cancer and normal cells. SCRW and SCRE did not show cytotoxicity up to the concentration of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ against the normal human cell line HEK293. Against human breast cancer cells (MCF-7), SCRW inhibited MCF-7 growth (by 27.6%) better than the anticancer drug cyclophosphamide (15.5%) at $1,000{\mu}g/mL$. SCRE ($1,000{\mu}g/mL$) inhibited the growth of human lung cancer cells A549 (37.6%) and human stomach cancer cells AGS (53.6%) more effective than did SCRW (21.0% and 35.4%) or CPA (22.2% and 31.7%). These results suggest the potential use of SCRE and SCRW as an excellent antioxidant and antiproliferative substance, respectively.
Background: The effect of methyl jasmonate (MJ) on ginsenoside production in different organs of ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer) was evaluated after the whole plant was dipped in an MJ-containing solution. MJ can induce the production of antioxidant defense genes and secondary metabolites in plants. In ginseng, MJ treatment in adventitious root resulted in the increase of dammarenediol synthase expression but a decrease of cycloartenol synthase expression, thereby enhancing ginsenoside biosynthesis. Although a previous study focused on the application of MJ to affect ginsenoside production in adventitious roots, we conducted our research on entire plants by evaluating the effect of exogenous MJ on ginsenoside production with the aim of obtaining new approaches to study ginsenoside biosynthesis response to MJ in vivo. Methods: Different parts of MJ-treated ginseng plants were analyzed for ginsenoside contents (fine root, root body, epidermis, rhizome, stem, and leaf) by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: The total ginsenoside content of the ginseng root significantly increased after 2 d of MJ treatment compared with the control not subjected to MJ. Our results revealed that MJ treatment enhances ginsenoside production not in the epidermis but in the stele of the ginseng root, implying transportation of ginsenosides from the root vasculature to the epidermis. Application of MJ enhanced protopanaxadiol (PPD)-type ginsenosides, whereas chilling treatment induced protopanaxatriol (PPT)-type ginsenosides. Conclusion: These findings indicate that the production of PPD-type and PPT-type ginsenosides is differently affected by abiotic and biotic stresses in the ginseng plant, and they might play different defense mechanism roles.
Growth characteristics, root yield and ginsenoside contents of 3-year-old ginseng in greenhouse shaded by $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain made of aluminum were compared to traditional shade facility in order to develop cultural practice for organic ginseng. Light transmittance ratio in greenhouse with $30^{\circ}$ sloped-curtain shade was distinctly lower than that of traditional shade from sunrise to 9 a.m., while its ratio in greenhouse was higher than traditional shade since 9 a.m. due to the reflection of light. Air temperature of greenhouse was $1.3^{\circ}C$ higher than that of traditional shade on the first ten days of August due to more reflected light. Root yield of greenhouse was 44% higher than that of traditional cultivation because of the inflow of reflected light and the decrease of disease of Alternaria and Anthracnose by blocking rainfall. Dry matter partitioning ratio of rhizome and lateral root were increased in ginseng cultivated at greenhouse due to longer survival time in leaf than traditional cultivation. Total ginsenoside contents cultivated at greenhouse was decreased in the part of taproot, while it was increased in the part of lateral and fine root compare to traditional cultivation. Individual ginsenoside contents between greenhouse and traditional cultivation showed significant difference more frequent in fine root than taproot and lateral root. Total ginsenoside contents including $Rb_1$, $Rb_2$, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf, $Rg_1$, and $Rg_2$ in whole root of 3-year-old ginseng did not showed significant difference by greenhouse and traditional cultivation.
Anemarrhena asphodeloides BUNGE is one of important medicinal crops, which has been collected or/and cultivated for its rhizomes. The main medicinal ingredient of the A. asphodeloides Bunge rhizomes is a saponin, which is known to have medical values for diaphoresis, sedatives and biuresis. However, studies on cultural methods and breeding works on this plant have not been made in detail. To increase productivity and to improve quality of crops, it is important to collect cultivated and wild lines, to classify them based on morphological and genetic characteristics, and to select superior pure lines at first. Therefore, total 20 A. asphodeloides lines collected were cultivated at the fieldof Chungnam Provincial Administration of Rural Development in 1995 to study the agronomic characteristics and to classify them based on morphological characteristics. Characteristics related with reproductive organ such as the number of spikes per plant and peduncle length showed greater variations than vegetative organrelated characteristics such as leaf length and rhizome length based on the coefficient of variation. Vigorous shoot growth resulted in better development of reproductive organs such as peduncle length and number of spikes per plant. However, the development of spikes was negatively correlated with chlorophyll content. Characteristics of underground parts were more significantly correlated with spike characteristics than aerial part characteristics. A. asphodeloides tested in this study were classified into 2 groups (group A and group B) based on centroid linkage cluster analysis. Group A showed more vigorous shoot growth with more leaves and spikes per plant, longer peduncle length, thicker peduncle diameter and higher shoot dry weight than group B. Group A could be further classified into 2 sub-groups based on leaf size, spike length and peduncle diameter, while group B also could be classified based on number of leaves, number of spikes and shoot dry weight.

The nutrition intake status of one hundred pre-school children, 5-year-old boys and girls, in Sok-Cho was surveyed. Subjects had two and half brothers and sisters. Breast-fed boys and girls were 48% and 40%, respectively. At the age of Six months, 70% of Subjects were Weaned. Percentage of total income spent for foods was $30{\sim}39%$. A varying number of foods were selected from 40 items. The food which children likeed best was fruit and icecream. Selected as liked food were straw berry, orange, apple, icecream, peach, grape, chocolate, youghurt and milk. Disliked foods were ginger, green onions, garlic, mushrooms and boiled rice mixed with orther cereals. Items which children have taken never before were kidney, slices of raw meat, liver, lotus rhizome and frech water fish. Insufficient caloric intakes were shown comprising 69~70% daily recommended dietary allowences for boys and girls. The total caloric intakes was composed of carbohydrate 65%, protein 11% and fat 23%, respectively. The cereal consumption was the highest (32.8%). There was a significant relationship (P<0.05) between the mother's knowledge on nutrition and the calorie. protein and calcium intake of boys. There was a significant relationship (P<0.05) between the mother's knowledge on nutrition and the caloric intake of girls.
This study were examined for their external morphological characters such as root, leaf, inflorescenses, flower, stamen, pistil, and fruit as to Korean Thalictrum L. and discussed taxanomic value of characters, and made out a new key. This study confirmed that specialized stems and roots type were divided into fibrous type, fibrous having a tuber type, long fusiform tuberous type, tuberoid type, rhizome type and stolon type. The stem were divided into two types based on existence and nonexistence of striate or pubescent. Leaves were usually 2-3-ternately and was divided into three types based on leaf apex, leaf base and number of lobe. Inflorescenses were divided into two type; corymb, panicle. Flower is bisexual, and don't have petal. It was divided from existence and nonexistence of calyx when it flowering. Especially, the stamens were divided from anther shape and apex shape, degree of dilation of filament, epidermic shape of filament etc., and the pistils were divided from glandular on ovary, length of carpel stipe etc.. The fruit is a achene and it was divided from achene shape, achene rib or wings, achene stipe length. This study suggest that useful characters for identifying section are degree of dilation of filament, anther shape, achene rib and wings, degree of dilation of achene. Also, roots, leaf shape, stamen and pistil shape, achene beak and achene length, achene and leaf hair appear to be useful characters for identifying species.
