Induction of Physiological Sex-Reversal and Gynogenetic Diploid in Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (무지개송어의 생리학적 성전환과 자성발생 2배체 유도)

  • This study was conducted to increase the efficiency of farming practice in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, by sex reversal and chromosome-set manipulation techniques. To obtain phenotypic males, hormonal sex reversal was carried out using an exogenous hormone treatment method. 5 mg of 17 alpha-methyltestosterone per kg diet was supplied for 82 days after first feeding at $10^{\circ}C$ and $13^{\circ}C$. More than 93% of the male population was produced by this method and growth of hormone-treated fish at $13^{\circ}C$ was faster than that of untreated bi-sexual groups. Induced diploid gynogenesis was carried out using artificial insemination of UV-irradiated sperm into haploid eggs. Based on the appearance of the rate of haploid syndrome and survival of embryo, a UV ray dose of at least $3,600\;erg/cm^2$ was required to inactivate rainbow trout sperm genetically. Haploid embryos were restored to diploid by blocking the extrusion of the second polar body using heat shock treatment at $28^{\circ}C$ for 20 min, 10 min post insemination. Gynogenetic diploid sex ratios were confirmed after maturation of the fish erythrocyte measurements and chromosome counts.

Using this model, SN ratio of taguchi method for each of subjective factors as well as values of weights are used in this comprehensive method for robot selection. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the model and to show a rank reversal when compared to a model that does not eliminate extreme values and eliminates the highest and lowest experts' values allocating the weights and the subjective factors.

  • Although an ideal low-pass filter is not physically realizable, it can be approximated on the basis of time reversal techniques. In this paper, we describe a method to approximately implement the ideal low-pass filter and apply it to the pitch extraction system. Experimental results show that our method is effective to estimate the fundamental frequency of the speech signal.

  • Communication environments in the context of underwater channel are characterized to be bad by the characteristics of multipath. Multipaths are affected by various factors e.g. the temperature and the salinity of the ocean. In this paper, the representative sound speed profiles were calculated in the southern part of Baengnyeoung island so that the eigen-ray paths with the channel impulse responses were determined using the average sound speed profile of last decade. The performance of underwater communication was analyzed using the BPSK modulation and time reversal method. The significant differences of results were shown according to the change of season and carrier frequency by using computer simulation. In addition, improved performance is obtained using preprocess channel impulse response for the better comparison of two cases of summer and autumn.

  • This paper presents the results for the performance improvement of underwater communication in a passive time reversal mirror (PTRM) using ray-based blind deconvolution (RBD). In conventional PTRM, the signal to be recovered is found from matched-filtering the received probe signal. However, the communication performance is degraded because the time-varying impulse response for each data frame is not reflected in the received probe signal. In this study, the time-variant transfer function is estimated from each received data frame using RBD, and the estimated time-variant transfer function is then used to recover the data signal using PTRM. The results from the experimental data show that the suggested method improves the communication performance when comparing with the conventional PTRM.

  • In nature, many small insects are using jumping as a survival strategy. Among them, fleas jump in a unique method. They use an elastomer, 'Resilin', an extensor muscle and a trigger muscle. By contracting the extensor muscle, the elastic energy, that makes a flea to jump, is stored in the resilin. After storing energy, the trigger muscle begins contracting and pulling the extensor muscle. When the extensor muscle crosses the rotational joint, direction of torque generated from the extensor muscle reverses, 'torque reversal mechanism'. Simultaneously, the elastic energy stored in the resilin releases rapidly and is converted into the kinetic energy. It makes a flea to jump 150 times its body length. In this paper, miniaturized jumping robot using flea-inspired catapult mechanism is presented. This mechanism is based on the 4-bar linkage and the reversal joint and is actuated by Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) coiled springs describing the flea's muscle. The robot prototype is fabricated by SCM process using glass fiber prepregs and a sheet of polyimide film. The prototype is 20mm link length, 34mm width and 2.0g weight and can jump 103cm.

  • Delay-sum back projection(DSBP) algorithm and the time reversal algorithm based on the finite-difference time-domain method are compared. The two algorithms, which operate in the time domain, can process the ultra-wideband (UWB) radar data to generate images that are close to the original location and shape of the target. For the experiment, the UWB radar consists of a network analyzer, a resistive V dipole antenna, a scanner, and a control computer. The radar aperture is synthesized by linearly scanning the antenna. A calibration procedure is applied to the measured data to remove signal distortion and clutter. The two algorithms are applied to the same data on the same platform. It is shown that the DSBP algorithm produces better images but takes longer time to produce the images than the FDTD-TR algorithm.

Temperature dependence of the effective anisotropy in Ni nanowire arrays

  • Magnetic hysteresis in Ni nanowire arrays grown by electrodeposition inside the pores of anodic alumina templates is studied as a function of temperature in the range between 5 K and 300 K. Nanowires with different diameters, aspect ratios, inter-wire distance in the array and surface condition (smooth and rough) are synthesized. These microstructure parameters are linked to the different free magnetic energy contributions determining coercivity and the controlling magnetization reversal mechanisms. Coercivity increases with temperature in arrays of nanowires with rough surfaces and small diameters -33 nm and 65 nm- when measured without removing the alumina template and/or the Al substrate. For thicker wires -200 nm in diameter and relatively smooth surfaces- measured without the Al substrate, coercivity decreases as temperature rises. These temperature dependences of magnetic hysteresis are described in terms of an effective magnetic anisotropy $K_a$, resulting from the interplay of magnetocrystalline, magnetoelastic and shape anisotropies, together with the magnetostatic interaction energy density between nanowires in the array. The experimentally determined coercive fields are compared with results of micromagnetic calculations, performed considering the magnetization reversal mode acting in each studied array and microstructure parameters. A method is proposed to roughly estimate the value of $K_a$ experimentally, from the hysteresis loops measured at different temperatures. These measured values are in agreement with theoretical calculations. The observed temperature dependence of coercivity does not arise from an intrinsic property of pure Ni but from the nanowires surface roughness and the way the array is measured, with or without the alumina template and/or the aluminum support.
