  • This study estimates the sound absorption capability of rice straw particle mats by two methods: the transfer function method and the reverberation room method. In the reverberation method, the central frequency was set to the one-third octave band in the 100-5000 Hz range; in the transfer function method, the frequency range was 500-6400 Hz. Both methods yielded similar noise reduction coefficients of the rice straw mats. The noise reduction coefficient was approximately 0.8, indicating a high sound-absorption property of the mats. Therefore, rice straw matting is a suitable candidate material for sound-barrier walls against highway noise.

  • Recently, a method of measuring impulse response is widely used for a room acoustic evaluation instead of measuring reverberation time by white noise excitation. Comparing with the traditional reverberation time measurement, this method has many advantages such as good repeatability and the ability to extract various room acoustic parameters at one measurement. In this study, the author developed a measuring system that can extract mono-aural room acoustic parameters from an impulse response measured with MLS (Maximum Length Sequence) signal excitation. These room acoustic parameters include reverberation times(EDT, RT), speech intelligibilities(C50, C80, D, U50, U80, AI) and sound strength(G). This paper introduces the configuration of the developed measuring system, test results and discussions for the measurements at several rooms.

  • Korean traditional houses have been evolved and developed in many years, adopting the natural environment to control exterior conditions. These control method are various Passive system of using natural materials, considering micro climate, building lay out, and these system are much natural and ecological to make the comfortable indoor climate than active systems of the present houses. This study aims to analyzed the acoustical characteristics of Korean traditional houses varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition. The reverberation time and level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen are measured in each houses. As a result, the reverberation time of Korean traditional rooms are below 0.6 second, and the sound insulation performance of Korean traditional door are mostly very low grade with D-15. The level difference between rooms are low grade not to meet minimum class except between main living room and master room away from main living building. These above results show that our traditional house are much more emphasized seeking visual privacy of rooms than aural privacy.

  • In this study, the reverberation characteristics of coupled spaces were investigated using a scale model. Two rooms were connected through an acoustically transparent opening known as an aperture. The acoustic characteristics of the coupled room by varying three parameters, the aperture opening size, the absorption ratio between the two rooms and the locations of the secondary room, were measured and analysed. The results indicated that a reverberant secondary room, produced large variations of the acoustics in the main room and an absorptive secondary room was effective to provide systematic control of the acoustics in the main room. The reverberant secondary room should be located at the rear of the stage and the aperture opening ratio over 6.25% produced large variations of the acoustics in the main room. However, the aperture opening ratio over 25% had no effect on variations of the acoustics in the main room. The absorptive secondary room should be located at the rear of the audience areas and the aperture opening ratio over 3.13% produced large variations of the acoustics in the main room.

  • The object of this study is the numerical analysis about the sound pressure distribution in reverberation rooms. In order to obtain the effect of the boundary conditions of the wall, the sound field was computed for various absorption coefficients and impedances. And the effect of the room shape was investigated by dealing with pentagonal type as well as the rectangular type. In addition an experiment was performed for the sound pressure distribution in a reverberation room and the result was compared with the analysis.

  • Field measurement method of heavy/soft impact sound pressure level which is regulated in JIS and ISO has been using in Korea, Japan and Canada. It is reported that heavy/soft impact sound pressure level was varied by the sound field condition of receiving room such as sound absorption power and room volume. In this study, it is checked that heavy/soft impact sound pressure level was affected by the receiving sound field condition. Rubber ball and bang machine sound pressure level was measured in the vertically connected reverberation chamber. In oder to check the effect of receiving sound field on heavy/soft impact sound pressure, sound absorption power was changed with polyester sound absorption blankets with air space and glass wool. The reverberation time at 1 kHz band was changed from 10 s to 0.2 s by sound absorption material. Rubber ball sound pressure level measured without sound absorption material was 58 dB in $L_{i,Fmax,AW}$, but the level was 46 dB with sound absorption treatment. From this result, it is confirmed that sound field correction method is needed in the heavy/soft impact sound pressure level measurement method using bang machine and rubber ball.

  • The sound absorption coefficient of glass wool (bulk density of 48 kg/m:1 and 32 kg/m7) was measured by reverberation room method as varying their cross-sectional area. The results show that the absorption is larger for smaller samples because of edge effect. The absorption coefficient with two different kinds of sources. 1/.7-octave band and while noise, gives similar values.

  • Recently, importance of working environment is increased in commercial vessel and offshore structure. Marine facility design and ambient environment condition are influenced to enhancing human performance and reducing human errors. Consequently, the quality of accommodation where offshore facility crews sleep, eat and relax will influence their job performance and overall sense of comport and well-being. Therefore, adequate acoustic isolation between adjacent spaces is normally required to achieve satisfactory internal noise levels, acoustic privacy and speech intelligibility. In this study, the reverberation time is investigated in the public areas where there are not provided the information of material's noise reduction coefficient (NRC). The experiment of reverberation time is rarely performed for the various type public areas in a marine structure. Therefore, the reverberation time in a vessel is investigate in order to evaluate the room's noise reduction coefficient (NRC) in a public area.

  • To determine the faults of ceramic cup it is proposed to use pseudo reverberation time concept estimated by impact test in room. Schroeder curves estimated from impact test for a cup with small crack and without one are utilized to estimate pseudo reverberation time. Pseudo reverberation times are compared and discussed according to a sort of impact hammers and impact points and also boundary conditions. As a result. proposed method is proved to be very useful to detect the existence of faults for candidate cups.

  • In this paper, we made shorter EDT(early decay time) of room reverberation curve using multiple-channel. The speech signal was processed inverse filtering with full-band and sub-band in the basis MINT, and then the multiple-channel adaptive filters were used LMS (Least Mean Square) and NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) algorithm. Experimental results, we could get 1/3 of time reduction at 20dB level in the reverberation curve using full-band NLMS when two microphones were used. Also, it is shown that the speech articulation was improved 80% from the test listeners with the speech, which was to shorten EDT by MINT in the subjective assessments using real room impulse response.
