Improvement of Current Velocity Estimation Method in an ADCP (ADCP에서의 유속 추정 방법 개선에 관한 연구)

  • An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler(ADCP) measures the current velocity and analyzes the degree of turbulence using Doppler effects of ultrasonic waves. Therefore, the autocorrelation or FFT spectrum estimates are obtained for extraction of current velocity in each spatial region. However, if the correlation method does not satisfy the assumption that the return signal spectra are symmetric Gaussian, the large bias errors can occur. Also, the accurate estimation of autocorrelation or FFT spectrum is difficult due to the short acquisition interval when the rapid changes of current velocity occur. Thus, in this paper, the estimation method of the autoregressive spectrum peak is suggested for the accurate current velocity measurement of both symmetric and asymmetric spectra. It is shown that estimation quality can be improved using the suggested method comparing with the conventional methods. Many return signals under the various environment are simulated and the results are compared and analyzed for evaluation of the suggested method.

Automatic Control System on Cardiac Output Regulation for the Moving Actuator Type Total Artificial Heart (MOVING-ACTUATOR TYPE 인공심장의 심박출 조절에 대한 자동 제어방법)

  • The goal of this study is to develop an effective control system for cardiac output regulation based upon the preload and afterload conditions without any transducers and compliance chambers in the moving actuator type total artificial heart. Motor current waveforms during the actuator movement are used as an input to the automatic control algorithm. While the current waveform analysis is performed, the stroke length and velocity of the actuator are gradually increased up to the maximum pump output level. If the diastolic filling rate of either right or left pump begins to exceed the venous return, atrial collapse will occur. Since the diastolic suction acts as a load to the motor, this critical condition can be detected by analyzing the motor current waveforms. Every time this detection criterion is met, the control algorithm decreases the stroke velocity and length of the actuator step by step just below the critical detection level. Then, they start to increase. In this way the maximum pump output under given venous return can be achieved. Additionally the control algorithm provides some degree of afterload sensitivity. If the aortic pressure is detected to exceed 120 mmHg, the stroke length and velocity decrease in the same way as the response to the preload. Left-right pump output balance is maintained by proper adjustment of the asymmetry of the stroke angle. In the mock circulatory test, this control system worked well and there was a considerable range of stroke volume difference with adjustment of the asymmetry value. Two ovine experiments were performed. It was confirmed that the required cardiac output regulation according to the venous return could be achieved with adequate detection of diastolic function, at least in the in vivo short-term survival cases[2-3 days . We conclude that this control algorithm is a promising method to regulate cardiac output in the moving actuator type total artificial heart.

  • Sewers are important national infrastructure and play an essential part by handling both wastewater and stormwater to minimise problems caused to human life and the environment. However, they can cause urban flooding when rainfall exceeds the system capacity. Sewer flooding is an unwelcome and increasingly frequent problem in many urban areas, and its frequency will increase over time with urbanisation and climate change. Under current standards, sewers are designed to drain stormwater generated by up to 10 year return period storms, but data suggests that many in practice have been experienced flooding with exceeding system capacity under increased storm events. A large number of studies has considered upgrading or increasing the design standard but there are still lack of information to propose a suitable return period with the corresponding system quantity to achieve. A methodology is required to suggest a proper level of standard within a suitable sewerage rehabilitation planning that can avoid the exceedance problem. This study aimed to develop a methodology to support effective sewer rehabilitation that could prevent urban flooding mainly resulted from the exceedance of existing storm sewer system capacity. Selected sewerage rehabilitation methods were examined under different storm return periods and compared to achieve the best value for money.

The Effect of Post-Purchase Discount Format on Consumers' Perception of Loss and Willingness to Return

  • Price discount is one of the commonly used promotion strategies to increase sales and revenue. If a discount is perceived before the purchase (i.e., pre-purchase discount), consumers are likely to perceive it as a potential gain. If it is noticed after making a regular-priced purchase (i.e., post-purchase discount), consumers may develop negative emotions and attitudes. Based on the rising transparency and omnipresence of price and discount information through web and mobile platforms, we attempt to tackle an understudied topic on the negative effect of post-purchase price discount. Specifically, post-purchase discount information may increase consumers' perception of monetary loss, which may affect consumers' decision to return the product, potentially increasing the operating costs borne by retailers. Based on a close scrutinization of the current market environment and previous academic literature, we suggest a novel conceptual framework to understand consumers' perception, attitude, and behavior (perception of loss, willingness to return) upon perceiving various formats of discount promotion (absolute value vs. percentage discount) posterior to the purchase of a product. We also look at the effect of price level (low-priced vs. high-priced). For marketing practitioners, we intend to suggest optimal promotion formats that can alleviate consumers' negative perceptions and prevent additional operation costs.

  • Recently, an expansion of safety facilities has been widely applied to effectively manage the safety of train operation due to increase of the high-speed section of the general railway and the introduction of high-speed train. Accordingly, performance improvement, upgrading and high reliability of existing safety devices are required. the dragging detector, one of the safety devices, is an analogue system that consists of closed circuit with an electric current flows and operates when the closed circuit is opened by the impact of the dragging object. Such method has unreasonable problem that should be replaced after being detected. It is need to replace with an automatic return type dragging detector which is easy to maintain. In addition, it is necessary to develop a dragging detector that applicable to general railway and urban railway including high-speed railway, in accordance with the speeding up and densification of trains, although it is currently applied only to high-speed railway. In this paper, we propose an automatic return type dragging detector which has versatility and excellent maintainability with digital sensor and real time monitoring.

The Nexus between Capital Structure and Firm Value by Profitability Moderation: Evidence from Saudi Arabia

  • The current study examines the nexus between the capital structure (debt-equity) and firm value (Tobin's Q) by including profitability (alternatively Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE)) as a moderator in the companies of Saudi Arabia. The study sample consists of 102 companies listed on Tadawul (the Saudi Arabian stock exchange) from different sectors of Saudi Arabia during the period 2013 to 2020. The study estimates pooled regression, panel regression with fixed and random effects, and dynamic panel regression models to report the results. The study results report that there is a negative and significant association between capital structure and firm value in model 1, while in models 2 and 3 there is a more negative and significant impact between the two study variables compared to model 1 after the inclusion of interaction variable, i.e. profitability in terms of ROA and ROE. The comparative result shows that the companies of Saudi Arabia hold more debt in their capital structure mix, hence evidencing a decrease in the firm value. The reported results also show that models 2 and 3 are better in explaining the impact of capital structure on firm value due to the interaction of profitability compared to model 1.

  • Although insulation equipment is installed, it is inevitable to avoid the stray current because rail is the return way of the direct current that is power of electric motor car. In this paper, by the investigation of the present state of underground facilities, and looking into the reason of electric corrosion, and analysis of corrosion accident cases of inside and outside of the country, fundamental data, to reduce of stray current and to prevent electric corrosion, were accumulated to enhance the safety of railway operation service.

  • A method for calculation of mutual inductance from the parallel power-line and earth conduct to communication-line is studied in the paper. The solution for the electromagnetic field produced by an overhead power-line is derived using Maxwell's equations and treating the as a boundary value problem. Total mutual inductance from direct current and image current to communication-line is used Carson's formula for infinitely long parallel conductors.

Extreme Value Analysis of Metocean Data for Barents Sea

  • An extreme value analysis of metocean data which include wave, wind, and current data is a prerequisite for the operation and survival of offshore structures. The purpose of this study was to provide information about the return wave, wind, and current values for the Barents Sea using extreme value analysis. Hindcast datasets of the Global Reanalysis of Ocean Waves 2012 (GROW2012) for a waves, winds and currents were obtained from the Oceanweather Inc. The Gumbel distribution, 2 and 3 parameters Weibull distributions and log-normal distribution were used for the extreme value analysis. The least square method was used to estimate the parameters for the extreme value distribution. The return values, including the significant wave height, spectral peak wave period, wind speed and current speed at surface, were calculated and it will be utilized to design offshore structures to be operated in the Barents Sea.

  • The high-power LED (Light Emitting Diode) which is recently gaining popularity as a digital light source has such advantages as low power consumption, long life, fast switching speed, and high efficiency. Thus, many efforts are being made to use the high-power LEDs for general lighting. This paper proposes LED driving circuit uses a DC/DC converter that can recover energy to compensate for the current variations caused by changes in LED equivalent resistance following a temperature change instead of serial resistance. The maximum input voltage of this DC/DC converter has low voltage variations by temperature change when the rated current is formed. In order to return current to the input side, we need a high boosting at low power. Thus, to improve the low efficiency of power converter, the power converter can be configured in such a way to gather the powers of low-capacity DC/DC converters and return the total power. Experiments showed that the proposed system improved efficiency compared to the conventional LED drive using the existing DC/DC converter.
