  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of additional administration of Banha-sasim-tang formulation to patients with gastrointestinal symptoms that did not improve with Western medicines. Methods: The patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were analyzed retrospectively. A paired t-test was performed on the Nepean Dyspepsia Index-Korean version (NDI-K) scores before and after administering the Banha-sasim-tang formulation. Results: A total of 27 subjects were included. The mean duration of taking the Banha-sasim-tang formulation was 15.6±3.1 days. The most commonly used Western medicine before taking the Banha-sasim-tang formulation was rebamipide. The means of the NDI-K score were 57.4±21.8 before administering Banha-sasim-tang formulation and 34.9±16.5 after administration, and the difference was statistically significant (p<0.0001). No serious side effects were encountered while taking the Banha-sasim-tang formulation. Conclusions: For patients whose gastrointestinal symptoms do not improve with Western medicines, additional administration of Banha-sasim-tang formulation may be an option. However, as this study is a retrospective chart review, prospective, large-scale, double-blind studies are needed in the future.

  • Purpose: The quality assurance (QA) chart rounds are multidisciplinary meetings to review radiation therapy (RT) treatment plans. This study focus on describing the changes in RT management based on QA round reviews in a single institution. Materials and Methods: After 9 full years of implementation, a retrospective review of all patients whose charts passed through departmental QA chart rounds from 2007 to 2015. The reviewed cases were presented for RT plan review; subcategorized based on decision in QA rounds into: approved, minor modifications or major modifications. Major modification defined as any substantial change which required patient re-simulation or re-planning prior to commencement of RT. Minor modification included treatment plan changes which didn't necessarily require RT re-planning. Results: Overall 7,149 RT treatment plans for different anatomical sites were reviewed at QA rounds. From these treatment plans, 6,654 (93%) were approved, 144 (2%) required minor modifications, while 351 (5%) required major modifications. Major modification included changes in: selected RT dose (96/351, 27%), target volume definition (127/351, 36%), organs-at-risk contouring (10/351, 3%), dose volume objectives/constraints criteria (90/351, 26%), and intent of treatment (28/351, 8%). The RT plans which required major modification according to the tumor subtype were as follows: head and neck (104/904, 12%), thoracic (12/199, 6%), gastrointestinal (33/687,5%), skin (5/106, 5%), genitourinary (16/359, 4%), breast (104/2387, 4%), central nervous system (36/846, 4%), sarcoma (11/277, 4%), pediatric (7/251, 3%), lymphoma (10/423, 2%), gynecological tumors (2/359, 1%), and others (11/351, 3%). Conclusion: Multi-disciplinary standardized QA chart rounds provide a comprehensive and an influential method on RT plans and/or treatment decisions.

  • Objectives: To observe safety and efficacy of herbal medicine for psoriasis patients. Methods: We did retrospective chart review for 107 psoriasis patients who had been treated by herbal medicine for 2 months, and we analyzed the liver function test (LFT) results and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scores of before and after the treatment. Results: The mean LFT and the number of patients with abnormal LFT decreased after the treatments. More than 95% of patients with normal LFT maintained normal results at after the treatment, and only 2.1% and 4.6% patients with normal LFT showed abnormal Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (GOT) and Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (GPT) results at after the treatment. Also, both mean PASI scores for all patients and patients with abnormal LFT before the treatment decreased significantly. Conclusions: This study suggest that herbal medicine may be safe and effective treatment for psoriasis.

Methods : We did retrospective chart review for 32 psoriasis vulgaris patients who had been treated by TKM. TKM treatment included acupuncture, herb med, external herbal solution and moxibustion. Result : PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) 75 responding rate at treatment week 16 was 71.9%. Mild symptom patients' improvement rate and moderate to severe symptom patients' improvement rate was similar. Mean PASI score was increased until treatment week 4 to 8, and after that period, mean PASI score was decreased. Conclusion : This study suggest that TKM may be an effective treatment for psoriasis vulgaris.

  • Purpose : To observe effects of Korean Medicine treatment for genital warts. Methods : In a single private clinic from February 2014 to February 2015, we did retrospective chart review for 326 patients with genital warts who had been treated by Korean Medicine. Korean Medicine treatment included herbal treatment and herbal ointment. Results : A total of 326 patients were enrolled in this study: 62.7%(n=219) male, 32.8%(n=107) female. In the type of diagnosis, new diagnosis was 45.4%(n=148) and recurrent disease was 54.6%(n=178). Complete clearance was achieved 63.2%(n=206) and treatment period was 3.5 months(range:1-9). Partial clearance-good was 15%(n=49), partial clearance-poor was 4.9%(n=16), non response was 16.9%(n=55) and the average treatment period was 4.3 months(range:1-14). In complete clearance group, female and the prevalence of less than 1 year were statistically significant(p<0.05). There was no recurrence of genital warts after TKM treatment during follow-up period(4-13months).Conclusion : This study suggest that Korean Medicine may be an effective treatment for genital warts.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on 44 patients who received obesity treatment at 23 Korean medicine clinics in Daejeon city. We analyzed weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, body fat mass, muscle mass, hip and waist circumference, EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D), Korean version of obesity-related quality of life scale (KOQOL), and satisfaction surveys at 4 and 8 weeks after treatment. Results: The weight, BMI change after 4 weeks and 8 weeks was decreased significantly. In addition, there were significant differences in fat mass, muscle mass, waist circumference, and hip circumference. Life quality scale EQ-5D and KOQOL showed decreased significantly. In the evaluation of overall satisfaction, safety, help level, recommendation intention, and revisit intention, more than 89% answered positively that they were satisfied. There were no serious side effects. Conclusions: It was significant effect on weight loss and obesity improvement after complex Korean medicine. And quality of life evaluation and satisfaction survey also show positive results.

  • Introduction: We aimed to investigate the predictive factors and optimal age for response to herbal medicine treatment for height gain in children. Methods: This retrospective chart review included 61 children (age range, 5-16 years) treated for height gain between 2011 and 2015. A predictive model was established by multiple linear regression analysis. Dependent variables were defined by the differences in percentile before and after herbal medicine treatment. The optimal cutoff value of patient age was determined by receiver operating curve analysis. Results : The age of initiation of herbal medicine therapy (p = 0.012) and administration of Forsythiae fructus (p = 0.002) were significant variables for treatment response. The adjusted R2 value was 0.231. The mean ages of the responder and non-responder groups were significantly different (p = 0.023). The optimal cutoff value of age for predicting treatment response was 9.75 years. Treatment response was better among children below 9.75 years of age. Conclusions: Patient age and administration of Forsythiae fructus were identified as determinants of response to herbal medicine treatment. Treatment of rhinitis and initiation of height gain treatment at an early age are critical for better response. These findings will provide fundamental data for further research.
