  • Two new types of positive biasedness, which are closely related to Type III positive biasedness (Yanagimoto and Sibuya, 1972), are proposed. We call these near Type III positive biasedness. Though no implication between Type II and near Type III biasedness exists, near Type III seems to be less restrictive than Type II biasedness. Constrained maximum likelihood estimates of distribution functions under near Type III positive bisedness are obtained. The likelihood ratio tests of symmetry against new positive biasedness restrictions are proposed. A small simulation study is conducted to compare the performance of the tests.

  • Arguing against Burzio's (1986) and Levin and Rappaport Hovav's (1995) proposal that verbs that occur in the there-construction are unaccusative ones, Takami and Kuno (2000) point out counter-examples to their proposal and put forth a functional characterization of the class. This paper proposes that the class of there-construction verbs can be characterized in terms of the concept of unaccusativity, where verbs can be determined to be unaccusative depending on their contexts. More specifically, it proposes that only such verbs can be there-construction verbs as are unaccusative in a restrictive approach to argument structure as in Hale and Keyser (1993a).

  • In the study of manifold decompositions, a central theme is to understand the source manifold taking advantage of the informations of a base space and a decomposition. The concepts of both Hurewicz fibrations and cell-like maps have played very important roles for investigating the mutual relations of three objects. But it is somewhat restrictive for a decomposition map to be cell-like because its inverse images must have trivial shapes.

  • In this paper, we are concerned with a class of nonlinear second-order differential equations with a nonlinear damping term and forcing term: $$(r(t)k_1(x(t),x'(t)))'+p(t)k_2(x(t),x'(t))x'(t)+q(t)f(x(t))=0$$. Passage to more general class of equations allows us to remove a restrictive condition usually imposed on the nonlinearity. And, as a consequence, our results apply to wider classes of nonlinear differential equations. Some illustrative examples are considered.

  • Motivated by the fact that upper solution bounds for the continuous Lyapunov equation are valid under some very restrictive conditions, an attempt is made to extend the set of Hurwitz matrices for which such bounds are applicable. It is shown that the matrix set for which solution bounds are available is only a subset of another stable matrices set. This helps to loosen the validity restriction. The new bounds are illustrated by examples.

  • This paper addresses the problem of designing robust adaptive output tracking control for a class of MIMO nonlinear systems which have different number of inputs and outputs The stability of the whole closed-loop system is guaranteed in the sense of Lyapunov and uniformly Itimately boundedness of the tracking error vector as well as estimated parameters are shown. In addition, we show that the restrictive assumptions on input gain matrix which is presumed in the past works can be eliminated by using proposed control law.

  • This paper deals with robust integral tracking control problem based on Lyapunov method via FL(Feedback Linearization) in order to solve a reference tracking problem of nonlinear system with parameter uncertainties. To overcome a restrictive matching condition the uncertainties is characterized in a suitable form. The design procedure which combine FL and LMIs(Linear Matrix Inequalities) based on Lyapunov method to achieve the robust performance and stability is developed. Finally, the performance of proposed controller is demonstrated via simulation of a linear reference tracking problem in the MLS(Magnetic levitating System).

  • In this paper, we present a new definition of conjugacy that can be applied to an arbitrary semigroup and it does not reduce to the universal relation in semigroups with a zero. We compare the new notion of conjugacy with existing notions, characterize the conjugacy in subsemigroups of partial transformations through digraphs and restrictive partial homomorphisms.

  • A systematic scheme is developed fer the design of new adaptive feedback linearizing controllers for nonlinear systems. The developed adaptation law estimates the uncertain time-varying parameters using the structure of diffeomorphisrn. Our scheme is applicable to a class of nonlinear systems which violates the restrictive parametric-pure-feedback condition [4]-[6].
