  • A method is proposed for the simultaneous optimization of several response functions that depend on the same set of controllable variables and are adequately represented by a response surface model (polynomial regression model) with the same degree and with constraint that the individual responses have the target values. First, the multiple responses data are checked for linear dependencies among the responses by eigenvalue analysis. Thus a set of responses with no linear functional relationships is used in developing a function that measures the distance estimated responses from the target values. We choose the optimal condition that minimizes this measure. Also, under the different degree of importance two step procedures are proposed.

  • In tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM), the vibro-contact response of a resonating tip is used to measure the nanoscale topology and other properties of a sample surface. However, the nonlinear tipsurface interactions can affect the tip response and destabilize the tapping mode control. Especially it is difficult to obtain a good scanned image of high adhesion surfaces such as polymers and biomolecules using conventional tapping mode control. In this study, theoretical and experimental investigations are made on the nonlinear dynamics and control of TM-AFM. Also we report the surface adhesion is an additional important parameter to determine the control stability of TM-AFM. In addition, we proved that it was adequate to use Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) contact model to obtain a reasonable tapping response in AFM for the soft and high adhesion samples.

  • A novel nematic liquid crystal (LC) cell with splay structure exhibiting wide viewing angle, fast response time and high transmittance at the same time has been developed. With rubbed homeotropic alignment in parallel directions, the device shows bend alignment in the absence of vertical electric field. However, with applied high voltage in a pulse form, the LC shows a optically compensated splay (OCS) orientation such that the mid-director is parallel to a substrate and at both surfaces the LCs are aligned vertically in parallel direction. In the device, the birefringence of the cell becomes tunable with applying voltage, i.e., the amount of light passed through the cell can be controlled by controlling the orientation of the LC. Since the OCS cell has a self-compensation structure such that the LC has a mirror symmetry along the mid-director, the device shows a wide viewing angle with only a single domain and a fast response time.

  • In this study, we optimized the shape of the surface aerator that will be installed in a biological reactor using the response surface method. Response surfaces of mass flow rate, impeller torque, mass flow rate per impeller torque are generated and used to track the optimum shape of the aerator. MOGA(Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm)method is adopted to find the optimum results. By increasing the mass flow rate per impeller torque, increase of oxygen supply efficiency to a reactor is anticipated. To verify the usability of the surface aerator, PIV measurements on flow fields inside a scale-downed biological reactor model are carried out.

  • The present paper is concerned with the optimal control and/or design of symmetric and antisymmetric composite laminate with two piezoelectric layers bonded to the opposite surfaces of the laminate, and placed symmetrically with respect to the middle plane. For the optimal control problem, Liapunov-Bellman theory is used to minimize the dynamic response of the laminate. The dynamic response of the laminate comprises a weight sum of the control objective (the total vibrational energy) and a penalty functional including the control force. Simultaneously with the active control, thicknesses and the orientation angles of layers are taken as design variables to achieve optimum design. The formulation is based on various plate theories for various boundary conditions. Explicit solutions for the control function and controlled deflections are obtained in forms of double series. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control and design mechanism, and to investigate the effects of various laminate parameters on the control and design process.

  • Nanostructured biomaterials have increased those potential for utilizing in many medical applications. In this study, benefit of nanotechnology for the response with biological targets will be described in terms of size, effective surface area and surface energy (physical aspect). Also, correlations between physical and biological interactions (greater protein adsorption on nano surface roughness) will be discussed for understanding biocompatibility of nanostructured biomaterials including carbon nanotube composites and nanostructured titanium surfaces. In the application parts, various major tissue cells, such as bone, cartilage, vascular and bladder cell responses will be discussed with suggested nanomaterials. Lastly, immune responses with macrophage (adhesion and several major cytokines) on nanostructured biomaterials will be described for evasive immune response.

  • Controlled mass transport in response to stimuli is essential for drug carriers. The complexity of the signaling system under physiological conditions has led researchers to develop precise nanocontainers that respond to stimuli in the physiological environment. Owing to several reasons, soft nanocontainers such as liposomes and micelles have been investigated for use as drug delivery systems. However, such carriers often suffer from the undesired leakage of drug molecules. In contrast, inorganic nanocontainers are robust, and their surfaces can be easily functionalized. For example, mesoporous silica nanoparticles equipped with gatekeeper molecules are increasingly being used for the controlled release of drug molecules in response to the desired stimuli. Since the development of the first hybrid nanocontainer comprising molecular machines, multiple versions of such gatekeeper systems featuring significantly improved stability and precise response to stimuli have been reported. In this study, various methods for incorporating photoresponsive nanocontainers with porous channels are developed.

  • There is not enough absorption space in the side of a vehicle so injuries to a passenger are higher compared to frontal impact injuries. For the protection of the passenger in the event of a side impact, vehicle regulations and new car assessment program(NCAP) are implemented all over the world. However, passive safety such as absorption technology of vehicle body itself is limited due to the narrow space of the side part. At the present time, it is well known that a side airbag including a curtain airbag is the most effective system to protect the passenger during a side impact. In this study, optimum design of the curtain airbag is carried out to reduce Head Injury Criterion(HIC) of the passenger. Based on crashworthiness simulation, an orthogonal array is selected based on the defined design variables, the response surfaces are generated from the orthogonal array and optimization is conducted with the surfaces.

  • We investigated the electro-optical(EO) performances of the super twisted nematic liquid crystal display(STN-LCD) on the polyimide(PI) surface using polymer film. The NLC pretilt angles generated are about $18^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates. However, the pretilt angle are at about $13^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A stable voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was observed on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film. Also, a faster response time for the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film can be achieved.

  • This paper introduces new wideband antenna-filter-antenna (AFA) uniform arrays that can be utilized as frequency selective surfaces (FSS) with low loss and sharp roll-off response, which are highly desirable characteristics for millimeter wave applications. The design adopts a simple 3-layer single polarization structure consisting of two patch antennas and a resonator. Both simulations and measurements are used to characterize the performances of the proposed design. Overall results show 18.5% 10-dB bandwidth. For the targeted band the insertion loss is less than 0.2 dB. Possible applications include quasi-optical amps, grid mixers and radomes for aircraft radar antennas.
