  • A combination of a gravity wall and an anchor beam is widely used to support the high soil deposit on rock mass. In this study, two groups of shaking table test were performed to investigate the responses of such combined retaining structure, where the rock masses were shaped with a flat surface and a curved surface, respectively. Meanwhile, the dynamic numerical analysis was carried out for a comparison or an extensive study. The results were studied and compared between the combined retaining structures with different shaped rock masses with regard to the acceleration response, the earth pressure response, and the axial anchor force. The acceleration response is not significantly influenced by the surface shape of rock mass. The earth pressure response on the combined retaining structure with a flat rock surface is more intensive than the one with a curved rock surface. The anchor force is significantly enlarged by seismic excitation with a main earthquake-induced increment at the first intensive pulse of Wenchuan motion. The value of anchor force in the combined retaining structure with a flat rock surface is generally larger than the one with a curved rock surface. Generally, the combined retaining structure with a curved rock surface presents a better seismic performance.

  • Response surface analysis was used to study dietary ratios of n-3/n-6 fatty acid and P/S to minimize plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL ${\cdot}$ VLDL-C levels and maximize plasma HDL ${\cdot}$ C levels of rats. Because the dietary components were not statistically independent, they were studied in combinations of two variables. The two-variable combinations were the most useful in locating the desired maximum or minimum plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol and LDL ${\cdot}$ VLDL-C response in terms of the proportions of the dietary components. Response surface contours and three dimensional plots were developed for each plasma lipid response. The contours and three dimensional plots were used to help determine those combinations of the dietary fatty acid ratios that would produce the desired minimum or maximum lpid responses. The statistical analyses indicated that the minimized plasma cholesterol response levels could be attained with a diet consisting of 2.26 n-3/n-6 fatty acid and 2.15 P/S ratios.

  • This research was motivated by our encounter with the situation where an optimization was done based on statistically non-significant models having poor fits. Such a situation took place in a research to optimize manufacturing conditions for improving storage stability of coffee-supplemented milk beverage by using response surface methodology, where two responses are $Y_1$=particle size and $Y_2$=zeta-potential, two factors are $F_1$=speed of primary homogenization (rpm) and $F_2$=concentration of emulsifier (%), and the optimization objective is to simultaneously minimize $Y_1$ and maximize $Y_2$. For response surface analysis, practically, the second-order polynomial model is almost solely used. But, there exists the cases in which the second-order model fails to provide a good fit, to which remedies are seldom known to researchers. Thus, as an alternative to a failed second-order model, we present the heterogeneous third-order model, which can be used when the experimental plan is a two-factor central composite design having -1, 0, and 1 as the coded levels of factors. And, for multi-response optimization, we suggest a modified desirability function technique. Using these two methods, we have obtained statistical models with improved fits and multi-response optimization results with the predictions better than those in the previous research. Our predicted optimum combination of conditions is ($F_1$, $F_2$)=(5,000, 0.295), which is different from the previous combination. This research is expected to help improve the quality of response surface analysis in experimental sciences including food science of animal resources.

  • Response Surface Method (RSM) constructs approximate response surfaces using sample data from experiments or simulations and finds optimum levels of process variables within the fitted response surfaces of the interest region. It will be necessary to get the most suitable response surface for the accuracy of the optimization. The application of RSM plan experimental designs. The RSM is used in the sequential optimization process. The first goal of this study is to improve the plan of central composite designs of experiments with various locations of axial points. The second is to increase the optimal efficiency applying a modified method to update interest regions.

  • In many application of response surface methodology, good estimation of the derivatives of the response function may be as important or perhaps more important than estimation of mean response. Using a graphical method, we have studied the effect of outliers, missing observations, and design augmentation with respect to the slope estimation in the response surf ace designs.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of acid etching treatment on surface characteristics and biological response of glass-infiltrated zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A hundred zirconia specimens were divided into four groups depending on surface treatments: untreated zirconia (group Z); acid-etched zirconia (group ZE); glass-infiltrated zirconia (group ZG); and glass-infiltrated and acid-etched zirconia (group ZGE). Surface roughness, surface topography, surface morphology, and Vickers hardness of specimens were evaluated. For biological response test, MC3T3-E1 cell attachment and proliferation on surface of the specimens were examined. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test at a significance level of 0.05. RESULTS. Group ZGE showed the highest surface roughness ($Ra=1.54{\mu}m$) compared with other groups (P < .05). Meanwhile, the hardness of group Z was significantly higher than those of other groups (P < .05). Cell attachment and cell proliferation were significantly higher in group ZGE (P < .05). CONCLUSION. We concluded that effective surface roughness on zirconia could be made by acid etching treatment after glass infiltration. This surface showed significantly enhanced osteoblast cell response.

  • In this study, parameter optimization of micro-static mixer with a cantilever beam was accomplished for maximizing the mixing efficiency by using successive response surface approximations. Variables were chosen as the length of cantilever beam and the angle between horizontal and the cantilever beam. Sequential approximate optimization method was used to deal with both highly nonlinear and non-smooth characteristics of flow field in a micro-static mixer. Shape optimization problem of a micro-static mixer can be divided into a series of simple subproblems. Approximation to solve the subproblems was performed by response surface approximation, which does not require the sensitivity analysis. To verify the reliability of approximated objective function and the accuracy of it, ANOVA analysis and variables selection method were implemented, respectively. It was verified that successive response surface approximation worked very well and the mixing efficiency was improved very much comparing with the initial shape of a micro-static mixer.

  • In this paper, the hybrid response surface method(HRSM) is proposed and examined. Hybrid response surface method calculate a approximate model repeatedly based on MPP coordinates. To verify the performance, probability of failure, MPP(Most Probable failure Point) and reliability index are calculated for nonlinear function and composite laminated plate by using reliability analysis method and compared with results by using typical response surface method(RSM). Probability of failure is calculated under the assumption of the nonlinear limit state equation and given failure criterion. The results of proposed method shows performance improvement in estimating the probability of failure.

  • Design of experiments based on Taguchi's orthogonal array is utilized for exploring the design space and for building response surface models of insulator and isolator database in order to facilitate the effective solution of multi-objective optimization commonly occurred in NVH problems. Response surface models, called engineering database of design space, provide an efficient means to rapidly model the trade-off among many conflicting NVH goals in automotive. In the design of insulator and isolator in automotive interior part, it is important not only to construct effective matrices of NVH but also to build up engineering database of current products. The experimental design especially based on orthogonal array and the nonlinear optimization algorithms are successfully used together to obtain the optimal design of insulator and isolator. The $2^{nd}$ order response surface models of absorption coefficient and insertion loss are constructed by using modified Taguchi's $L_{12}2^13^7$ orthogonal array and successfully used in optimal design of insulator and isolator.
