Starting point bias arises in the iterative bidding framework when the initial bid influences respondent's final bids. The bidding game has become the most commonly used method of asking the valuation question in contingent valuation studies. A bidding game is typically conducted by either personal or telephone interview. Bidding begins with an interviewer positing an initial bid (starting bid) to a respondent. If the respondent is willing to pay the initial bid, the interviewer revises the bid upward until a negative respondent is obtained. A negative response to the initial bid downward until an acceptable amount is found. The final bid is a measure of the respondent's Hicksian compensating or equivalent surplus for the item being valued. This paper explicity tested for starting point bias in bidding games. That is, it was asked whether final bids are influenced by the magnitude of the starting bids in the process of valuating the WTP when to improve the quality of running water in Seoul and its vicinity. The result shows staring point bias exists in the present data and its magnitude is ${\delta}$=-0.265237.
Measures in response rate used to measure the representativeness of the sample (the more high response rate) better explain the representativeness of the sample. However, we cannot often explain the representativeness of the sample because there is nonresponse even in the high response rate. Therefore, Schouten et al. (2009) presented a new R-indicator measure that can be described as a representative of the sample. We research the new estimator of the R-indicator in this paper because there are parameters that require estimations. We describe the meanings as representative of the R-indicator; consequently, the bias and efficiency of the proposed estimator for R-indicator are compared to the existing estimator under various simulations. The representativeness of the sample is also explained by applying the proposed estimators in the actual data.
The present paper describes the problem of hydrologic response estimation using non-parametric ridge regression method. The method adapted in this work is based on the minimization of the $C_L$ statistics, which is an estimate of the mean square prediction error. For this method, effects of using both the identity matrix and the Laplacian matrix were considered. In addition, we evaluated methods for estimating the error variance of the impulse response. As a result of analyzing synthetic and real data, a good estimation was made when the Laplacian matrix for the weighting matrix and the bias corrected estimate for the error variance were used. The method and procedure presented in present paper will play a robust and effective role on separating hydrologic response.
This study analyzes ways to detect protest responses (hereafter, PR zero-bid) in the contingent valuation method (CVM). In order to distinguish PR zero-bids from true zero-bids (non-PR zero bids), this study adopts the concept of the implicit willingness to pay employing the Hicksian compensating surplus and the Taylor's 1st order approximation. When a respondent proposes a zero-bid (i.e., WTP=0) and chooses a PR filtering item to indicate that her implicit WTP is not necessary zero, her response is identified as a PR zero bid. PR filtering items falling into the PR zero bids category include the uncertainty of information, distrust in the government and project achievement, disagreement to project plans, discontent with the fairness of public works and their payment method and animosity against the CVM itself. The empirical analysis shows that PR zero bids take place systematically in particular respondent groups: respondents who have never used similar facilities before nor plans to use the facility provided by the public project, the employed, and low income groups. In conclusion, the study suggests that a CVM questionnaire needs to be designed carefully to minimize problems associated with PR zero bids and the potential risks of having sample selection bias should be concerned.
A couple of previous studies have warned against the use of homogeneous choice models in assessing the effect of reference price since unaccounted for response heterogeneity may result in spurious reference price effects(Chang, Siddarth and Weinberg 1999; Bell and Lattin 2000). According to Meyer and Kahn(1991), not accounting for consideration set heterogeneity may also bias the effect parameters in the choice model. Therefore, failure to account for these two sources of bias, in fact, have cast doubt on the empirical support for reference price effects in general. In view of aforementioned potential sources of bias, the author investigates the robustness of loss aversion effect in the reference-dependent model after accounting for heterogeneity in response as well as consideration set. The proposed model defines individual household's consideration set based on the posterior distribution of preference obtained from the Empirical Bayes approach. In addition, the same posterior distribution is used to form household-specific reference prices. Response heterogeneity correction is carried out via the Latent Class approach. The proposed model outperforms the Reference-Dependent model that includes the reference price measure most often employed in the previous studies. This implies that as a way of simplifying decision task, consumers restrict their consideration set to a subset of available brands not only in making a brand choice but also in forming reference prices.

A nonresponse adjusted raking ratio estimator that consists of weighting adjustment using estimated response probability and raking procedure is often used to reduce the nonresponse bias and keep the calibration property of the estimator. We investigated asymptotic properties of nonresponse adjusted raking ratio estimator and proposed a variance estimator. A simulation study is used to examine the performance of suggested estimators.

The unknown response function is usually approximated by a low order polynomial model. Such an approximation always accompanies bias due to model departure. The minimax Average MSE (AMSE) designs are suggested for estimating mean responses. A class of first order minimax AMSE designs is derived and a specific first order minimax AMSE design is selected from the class by optimizing the secondary criterion related to the power of the lack of fit test.
We have proposed a method to calculate the absorption coefficients for the bound-to-continuum transitions in a strong biased quantum-well infrared photodetector. We have applied this method to a manufactured sample of typical device parameters, and obtained good agreements with experiments. The absorption coefficients evaluated are up to 5,700/cm at some particular operating conditions. We have also been able to make a qualitative explanation for the bias dependence of response.
Objective: This study presents an observation and analysis on behavioral characteristics of old users in comparison to young users in the use of control on display interface. Background: Touch interface which allows users to control directly on display, is conceived as delight and easy way of human-computer interaction. Due to the advantage in stimulus-response ensemble, the old users, who typically experiencing difficulties in interacting with computer, would expected to have better experience in using computing machines. Method: Twenty nine participants who are over 50 years old and 14 participants who are in 20s years old were participated in this study. Three primary tasks in touch interface, which are tap, move, and flick, were delivered by the users. For the tap task, response time and point of touch response were collected and the response bias was calculated for each trial. For the move task, delivery time and the distance of finger movements were recorded for each trial. For the flick task, task completion time and flicking distance were recorded. Results: From the collected behavioral data, temporal and spatial differences between young and old users behavior were analyzed. The older users showed difficulty in completing move task requiring eye-hand coordination.
