  • In this study, we evaluated the changes of fruit quality indices during fruit development and ripening in Korean new pear cultivar 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan' to determine appropriate harvest time and to enhance the marketability. The fruit of each cultivar harvested from 100 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 135 and 150 DAFB in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan', respectively. The fruit growth of both cultivars showed a typical single sigmoidal pattern. Flesh firmness of two cultivars decreased continuously with fruit development and ripening, reaching a final level of about 2.6 kgF at harvest stage. The starch content of fruit sap was much higher in the fruits of early development stage than the later stage of fruit ripening. In 'Wonhwang' pears, the starch level decreased coincide with fruit ripening (130 DAFB), while that of 'Whasan' decreased from very early stage of fruit development (120 DAFB), 30 days before full ripe. 'Whasan' pear showed much lower acidity level of about 0.13% during fruit development and ripening period compared with that of 'Wonhwang'. Therefore, the ratio of soluble solids to total acidity (TSS/acid) increased gradually with fruit development and ripening, reaching a final level of 80 and 98 in 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan', respectively. There were no climateric rise of fruit respiration during fruit ripening periods in two oriental pear cultivar. The changes of skin color difference including hunter vale $a^*$ which means loss of green color occurred only after onset of ripening in two cultivars.

  • To investigate the effect of light pretreatment on photosynthetic characteristics of leaf blade of rice, 2 varieties of japonica type and 2 varieties of tongil type were grown under 30% or 70% shading conditions from tillering stage to heading stage. Shading treatment of 70% at the heading stage produced low dry matter, and higher LAR and SLA compared with other combination of shading treatment and growing stage did. Photosynthetic activity was lower in order of 0%, 30% and 70% shading treatment under the low light intensity(5Klux) but significantly high in 30% shading treatment under the high light intensity (33Klux) at tillering stage. Photosynthetic activity under low(5Klux) and high(33Kluk) light intensity were higher in order of 70%, 30% and 0% shading treatment at heading stage. Respiration /photosynthesis ratio was lower in shading treatment than in control. CGR, RGR and NAR decreased in shading treatment. Shading treatment reduced the number of ripened grain per panicle and decreased the harvesting index.

  • The plants of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. NC2326 were germinated in 10 cm D$\times$20 cm H polyethylene pot, and sand-cultured with Hoagland solution near by the window of laboratory room(26$\pm$5$^{\circ}C$). The growing plants were sprayed with various concentrations of ABA around 9 : 00 a.m. once in every two days for 12 weeks in summer. As the results, frequency of stomatal number, stomatal opening, chlorophyll content, respiration rate, and protein content in the leaves were decreased with the increasing of concentrations of ABA, respectively. The plant growth was inhibited by exogenous ABA, but leaf abscission was not found during the experimental period. The ratio of three to one in chlorophyll a to b was not altered by exogenous ABA. All the stomata were closed within three minutes by 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA and within seven minutes by 1-10 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA after the spraying of ABA, and then reopended after a few hours in 1-10 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA and after 24 hours in 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA. The polar movement of chloroplast within the guard cells was found in the higher concentrations of 10 and 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA, but not found in the lower concentrations than 1 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA. During the night and weak light, it was fond that the inhibition of respiration rate by the higher concentration of ABA was owing to firstly the stomatal closure by the spraying of ABA and secondly the decrease of stomatal frequency by the inhibition of stomatal development with exogenous ABA for the long period of 12 weeks. In the band number of leaf protein by the electrophoresis, most of the protein bands were disappeared by the higher concentration of 100 $\mu\textrm{g}$ ml-1 ABA, but were not altered by the lower concentration of ABA in comparison with control.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to find out whether or not there are differences of effects when we count breaths on inspiration or expiration, and how differently the effects show up according to gender or Sasang Constitution Methods A group of 79 participants were enrolled and diagnosed Sasang Constitution by Sasang Constitution Diagnosis System of the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine. Physical responses to respiratory changes were measured by Biofeedback sensors that were attached to the participants while they were seated comfortably on a sofa and breathing normally without counting for 5 minutes, counting on inspiration for 5 minutes, and counting on expiration for 5 minutes. Results and Conclusions 1. Mean heart rate and respiration rate decreased in association with breathing counting on inspiration and expiration more than breathing normally without counting. Especially respiration rate was stabilized during counting on inspiration and mean heart rate was stabilized during counting on expiration. 2. Interaction between breathing methods and gender did not appear. In comparison between gender, LF/HF ratio was higher in male during breathing normally without counting and counting on inspiration. Body temperature was higher in male during counting on inspiration and expiration. 3. Interaction between breathing methods and Sasang Constitution did not appear. In comparison between Sasang Constitution, mean heart rate was higher in Soyang-in, Soeum-in than Taeeum-in and abdominal amplitude was lower in Taeeum-in than Soeum-in.

  • This study evaluates the performance of an optical sensor and measurement system (CMA-24) which can analyze the fluctuation of dissolved oxygen and pH simultaneously. In the optical sensor system, the fluorescent materials, Rudpp and HPTS which are sensitive to dissolved oxygen and pH, respectively, are coated on the bottom of a 24-well -plate by the sol-gel technology. The detection times of the emission light of the oxygen sensor were $4,186{\pm}13.90{\mu}s$ and $4,452{\pm}36.68{\mu}s$ for the dissolved oxygen of 17% $O_2$ and 7.6% $O_2$, respectively. On the other hand, the detection times of the pH sensor were $6,699.43{\pm}14.64{\mu}s$, $6,722.24{\pm}6.21{\mu}s$, and $6,748.52{\pm}2.63{\mu}s$ using pH 6, 7, and 8, respectively. When we determined cellular respiration levels of C2C12 myocytes with CMA-24, $O_2$/pH measurement system, the ratio of the uncoupled to coupled OCR (oxygen consumption rate) was 1.41. The results mean that this CMA-24 system shows almost the same sensitiveness as the commercial system.

  • When using an automotive heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, we can obtain fresh outside air while maintaining the interior vehicle temperature. In this study, a correction equation considering experimental data for automotive indoor air leakage is defined to simulate the ratio of fresh air to recirculated air in the automobile cabin. With this correction equation, numerical results are compared with experimental data and validated. The $CO_2$ concentration in the automotive cabin is evaluated by considering various boarding conditions and mass flow rates of the HVAC system. The $CO_2$ concentration model derived in this study is expected to be used to control the effective air conditioning and become a basic research tool for automotive air quality control system development.

  • Sludge Returned CMAS process was applied to treat the wastewater from electric accessory manufacturing company while this type of wastewater was usually treated by chemical process. This result show that the removal rate of TCOD was about 70-80% regardless of hydraulic retention time, On the contrary, the removal rate of BOD was abtained in a range of 77-92% depending on hydraulic retention time. In order to remove more than 80% of organic materials with the proposed process, the F/M ratio should be maintained below 0.17. In this case, the calculated value of organic removal rate, Km, was calculated to be 1.26 hr$^{-1}$, and the ratio of cell synthesis/total energy was 0.32 and 0.26 for COD and BOD base, respectively. The yield coefficient was calculated to be 0.242 and the half velocity coefficient was 0.3 hr$^{-1}$. The value of endogenous respiration coefficient was 0.02 hr$^{-1}$. The measured effluent BOD concentration, MLSS concentration in aeration tank, oxygen uptake rate, and sludge production were matched relatively well with the calculated values using above coefficients, In order to optimize the dewatering of sludge, the hydraulic retention time was recommended to be 15. 6 hrs. These results indicate that the wastewater from an eletric accessory manufacturing company can be treated safely with a biological process.

  • The present investigation was undertaken in vivo to determine whether the functional alterations of hepatic mitochondria induced by ethanol might be prevented by taurine. We examined the effects of supplementation of taurine on hepatic mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in the chronic ethanol-administered rats. Isolated hepatic mitochondria from three groups of rats were functionally tested by an analysis of $\beta-hydroxbutyrate-supported$ respiration and the coupling of this process to ATP synthesis in the presence of ADP. The three groups were control group(CO), ethanol(60g/L) administered group (AL), and ethanol (60g/L) + taurine (5g/L) supplemented group (AT). Ethanol and/or taurine were given in drinking water for 10 weeks. The mitochondria from AL group had lower state 4 respiratory rate, respiratory control (RC) ratio and ADP : O(P/O) ratio than those from CO and AT group. It showed that the ethanol administered rats were less coupled and thus less efficient with respect to mitochondrial ATP synthesis than both control rats and ethanol + taurine supplemented rats. It suggests that taurine supplementation might improve the impaired oxidative phosphorylation efficiency in mitochondrial dysfunction that is recognized as a cause of liver diseases in chronic ethanol consumption.

  • In this paper, we design a 2.4 GHz bio-radar system that can detect human heartbeat and respiration signals with small size and improved noise performance using single circular-polarized antenna and phase-locked loop. The demonstrated bio-radar system consists of single circular-polarized antenna with $90^{\circ}$ hybrid, low-noise amplifier, power amplifier, voltage-controlled oscillator with phase-locked loop circuits, quadrature demodulator and analog circuits. To realize compact size, the printed annular ring stacked microstrip antenna is integrated on the transceiver circuits, so its dimension is just $40\times40mm^2$. Also, to improve signal-to-noise-ratio performance by phase noise due to transmitter leakage signal, the phase-locked loop circuit is used. The measured results show that the heart rate and respiration accuracy was found to be very high for the distance of 50 cm without the additional digital signal processing.
