  • The unique phenomenon that jet flow kinetic energy is converted to thermal energy through thermoacoustic resonance can be applied for the multiple ignition of liquid rocket engines. The present article includes the basic principle and theory behind the phenomenon as well as major outstanding, previous research works. The thermoacoustic phenomenon is affected by underexpanded jet flow characteristics from a nozzle, geometries of a nozzle and a resonance tube, and chemical composition of jet flow. The paper concludes with discussion what should be considered as crucial issues for the future research on the development of a multiple ignition system of liquid rocket engines.

  • The flow-excited Helmholtz resonance phenomenon was investigated numerically using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes approach. The fundamental cause of the Helmholtz resonance phenomenon is known as shedding of a single discrete vortex from orifice edge that travels during one period of the oscillation. In this study, serrated deflector, which is biomimetic design of the owl's feather, is used to split a single vortex into small vortices. Rectangular deflector and serrated deflector are compared with numerical results of pressure and streamline inside the cavity. Consequently, the serration breaks the shedding period of vortex core and eliminates the resonance. Also, it changes the flow pattern in according to the location of different serration height. By making inflows and outflows occur simultaneously in spanwise direction in the cavity, the period of Helmholtz resonance disappears. Comparing between rectangular deflector and serrated deflector, the serrated deflector can deal with the Helmholtz resonance more effectively.

  • Power system restoration following a wide area or complete blackout starts with energizing primary restorative transmission systems. During this primary restoration process, unexpected over-voltage may happen due to nonlinear interaction between the unloaded transformer and the transmission system. This is known as the harmonic resonance phenomenon that may cause burning out of transformer or other devices. Since the harmonic resonance originates from the nonlinear characteristics, it is very difficult to predict the occurrence of this phenomenon. This paper reports the possible existence of the harmonic resonance in Korean power system. Analysis of the harmonic over-voltage is presented based on the various simulations using PSCAD/EMTDC.

  • Recently, unusual transformer failures have been reported in 25kV power systems connected with a VCB and transformer. In this study, performance of the protection system, dielectric strength of the transformers, characteristics of switching surges and resonance phenomena were analysed and assessed. All investigations regarding the insulation breakdown of the transformers were carried out by simulations, laboratory tests, factory tests and on-site measurements in order to thoroughly investigate the root causes. Furthermore, experimental methods for investigating the resonance phenomenon were derived and tests were conducted applying the derived method to recreate the phenomenon in the transformer. It is found that resonance between the transformer and switching surge generated by closing a VCB can initiate the breakdown of internal windings of a transformer.

  • Power transformers, air-intakes and stacks in the urban combined power plant are main noisy sources. Because of Inhabitant complaint by abnormal noise transferred from the power plant. the noise was investigated at power plant and uptown area. The result of diagnosis made the acoustic resonance phenomenon by 580Hz's combustion dynamic pressure with the standing wave mode of sound fields in exhaust passageway of gas turbine into main noise source of public complain. The abnormal noise is caused by the resonance exhaust noise transferred through stacks of power plant.

  • Even though the LCL filters have superior harmonic attenuation ability to L filters, stability has always been an issue. The system could be unstable because of the resonance phenomenon, especially when digital controller is used. Adding a notch filter to the compensator is one approach to solve the problem. Resonance phenomenon can be inhibited by aligning notch frequency to system resonance frequency. However, resonance frequency variation can be obtained because the actual system has a nonstationary characteristic. Therefore, the system could be unstable, where the system parameters are changed when the conventional notch filter is used. An adaptive digital notch filter that stabilizes the system even system parameters are changed. Simulation and experiment results are provided to verify the validity of the proposed adaptive filter.

  • A novel ZCS high frequency inverter in complex resonance applied for reduction of PM is developed. This inverter is suppressed the switching stress by using complex resonance. The stable operation is realized by ZCS using overlapping commutation phenomenon. The ZCS characteristics are investigated based on numerical analysis and experimental results.

  • This paper introduces the reduction design technique of the resonance phenomenon of the inner PCB based on power integrity from the analysis about the inner power supply line generating RLC resonance. With the technique, the resonant frequency resulted from the structural characteristics of the PCB can be analyzed and allows to predict and the capacitor for resonance phenomenon reduction can be decided as a decoupling capacitor. From the simulation result, it was confirmed that the PCB's resonance phenomenon reduction design technique should have the reduction effect in the inner motherboard of the industrial controller. This research will be contributed to the improvement of the safety of a PDN (Power Delivery Network) structure in the layout design technique of the PCB.

  • In shallow water with a thermocline, the characteristics of sound propagation strongly depend on the signal frequency. When only one of the source and the receiver is above the themocline, it is known that the intensity of the received signal changes largely and almost periodically as the signal frequency varies. This is the so-called channel resonance. By using the ray-mode approach, the formula relating the resonance frequency and the sound speed profile is obtained, and the resonance phenomenon is analyzed. Also this analysis is verified by numerical calculation.

  • The blowoff phenomenon was experimentally investigated in a ducted combustor according to the acoustic excitation. The blowoff equivalence ratio rapidly increases at specific acoustic excitation frequencies. A resonance phenomenon occurs when the excitation frequency approaches the harmonic frequency of the combustor. The resonance increases the velocity fluctuation in the combustor and the infiltration velocity of the unburned gas in the shear layer. Consequently, the mixture velocity exceeds the burning velocity and the blowoff occurs at the higher equivalence ratio.
